Dustin Poirier opens up on fighting UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway for the interim UFC lightweight title. This fight will serve as the headliner of the UFC 236 pay-per-view event. This marks Holloway making the move to 155 lbs to fight “The Diamond.”

Poirier has picked up some big wins over top names including ex-champ Anthony Pettis, ex-WSOF champ Justin Gaethje, and ex-UFC champ Eddie Alvarez.

The title contender recently did an interview where he opened up on how this fight came about.

“I’m not sure (how this happened),” Poirier told MMAjunkie. “I don’t know. I don’t make the decisions. I don’t even know what happened. Honestly, these last few months I’ve been kept in the dark, really. I’ve been here seven weeks now in South Florida at my spot training. Not in a training camp preparing for anything, but just learning and staying on the mats. I just felt like something big was coming, and I decided to stay here. Good thing I did because I got the call for this one.”

“It’s going to come down to me being ready for the opportunity again,” Poirier said. “I’m going to need to be ready to rock. A lot of responsibility is going to come with that belt, and I understand that. I’m going to need to be by the phone, ready to go when the champ comes back and is ready and unify the belt. That’s just what we’re going to do. I’m going to enjoy that weekend, enjoy that next week and then get back to normal life, which is this. I’ll be ready for that when the call comes.”

The UFC 236 pay-per-view event is set to take place on Saturday, April 13, 2019 at the State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Georgia. The main card will air on pay-per-view at 10 p.m. ET. The preliminary card will air on ESPN at 8 p.m. ET and the the UFC’s streaming service, Fight Pass.

Khabib sends message to title contender Tony Ferguson for missing his chance at securing some UFC gold.

UFC President Dana White told ESPN.com that Ferguson had been offered to fight UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway for the interim lightweight belt.

However, Ferguson turned it down and the Las Vegas-based promotion got Dustin Poirier to step in. Now, Holloway and Poirier will battle it out at the upcoming UFC 236 pay-per-view event.

It seems that the MMA gods do not want Nurmagomedov and Ferguson to fight each other despite the interest from fight fans across the world wanting to see that fight happen. The promotion has made it for the fourth time at UFC 223 but that fight got scrapped after Ferguson suffered a knee injury.

The UFC lightweight champion called out Ferguson for missing the fight opponent with the following that he posted on Instagram:

“I want to remind you guys, that before I become champion, I was close to the title fight 3 times and all 3 times I missed my opportunity. First was in July 2016 when I was offered to fight in Ramadan month and I turned it down, second was UFC 205 NYC when I was offered a title fight, bout agreement signed, but my title was given away, you know the story.

Third time was UFC 209 where I was hospitalized and almost died. But after every single fail I (was told): you missed your chance, earn your shot with one more victory. Tony you had your chance and you missed it, and that’s your fault only. You know that I’m disqualified and can’t fight, but it’s not fair to strip me of the title, I fought 3 times in 9 months. I won and defended my belt.

As a fighter you deserve a title fight, you are great fighter and opponent, but now you have to fight or wait for my DQ to be over and fight(but UFC doesn’t want it). I don’t understand your offenses, if you fell down, you got to get up, not complain.”
