UFC interim featherweight champion Jose Aldo has been the subject of a seemingly endless amount of MMA headlines lately, and his distrust for his employers has lead to him asking for his release in the aftermath of Conor McGregor’s announced lightweight title fight against Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205.

The longtime former champ has frequently spoken out over fighter pay in the past, but when he was passed over for a rematch with ‘The Notorious’  again, Aldo decided that he had had enough with the numbers-focused decision making process of the world’s foremost MMA outfit. He’s supposed to meet up with Dana White and company next week to discuss his fighting future, where he revealed he is willing to throw his next fight in order to get released.

So if we have truly seen the last of Aldo in the Octagon like he proclaimed, his position in the history of a company he was nearly always at odds with should become a frequently discussed subject. But if you ask the pound-for-pound mainstay, he said he believes he’s the best while recently speaking in his native Rio de Janeiro via MMA Fighting:

“In the entire promotion’s (history)? For sure,” Aldo said. “Of course, people will be partial, but I put myself among the best in history. When I said back then I was the best fighter people criticized me a lot, and I say it again. To me, brother, I’m the best.”

As for his legacy, Aldo focused on being a champion who was the same person as he was before the UFC, unchanged by the bright lights and trappings of the Octagon:

“(I hope to be remembered as) an excellent athlete, an excellent fighter. For everything I’ve done in there, always giving my best. And for being the champion I always was,” he continued. “I entered (the UFC) as ‘Scarface’ and left as people’s champion. That makes me proud. I like doing what I always did. I never changed my head because I was the champion. I want to leave as the guy that became champion and continued being the same person.”

Some believe that the UFC could easily walk away from the discontented Aldo because he was never the pay-per-view (PPV) draw that they’ve come to love in the form of Conor McGregor and Ronda Rousey, but Aldo challenged the media to tell him another fighter outside of those two and Brock Lesnar that truly outsold him in terms of buyrate:

“And people say I don’t sell pay-per-views. If you compare, who have they created who can sell well? They brought Brock Lesnar from WWE, who brought another audience, Ronda (Rousey) came and brought another audience. Conor is a guy that sells well. The only one. I don’t see anyone who sells more than me. Give me a name.”

If he does indeed continue his UFC career, Aldo has been linked to a fight with former lightweight champion Anthony Pettis, who recently made his successful featherweight debut by submitting Charles Oliveira at UFC on FOX 20 in August.

‘Showtime’ was scheduled to meet Aldo for the featherweight strap in 2013, yet the way he was dealt with then (he would have had to vacate the 145-pound title to fight Pettis at 155 pounds) played a part in his current lack of motivation for fighting:

“Is Pettis a good offer? When he was the champion, and had to sell pay-per-views, he never sold more than me or anyone else,” Aldo said. “When I beat Frankie Edgar the first time, (Pettis’) manager came after me backstage, following me and saying ‘let’s make this fight happen.’ When we got to the UFC, I was the one getting f**ked. I don’t want this. I’m trying to help, and I’m not being helped. It’s not a matter of fighting or not fighting. I’m not excited to fight now.”

After the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) fined him a staggering $150,000 for his bottle-throwing incident at a UFC 202 pre-fight press conference in Las Vegas, Dana White recently revealed that featherweight champion Conor McGregor no longer wanted to fight in the State of Nevada again.

Now, “The Notorious” is back to confirm the sentiment, declaring he’d now rather fight in New York City, where he’ll meet lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez in the main event of November 12’s UFC 205, in an interview with Rolling Stone:

“I don’t see Nevada in my future, for the foreseeable future is how I see it,” McGregor says. “I’m free to do what I want. … I’m good. I’m good. New York, New York. That’s what I think.”

Taking an accepting attitude of his punishment, McGregor called into the NSAC hearing and was apologetic, believing the stance would aid his plight. But the NSAC, who have long been ‘notorious’ in their own right for handing out ridiculous suspensions and fines, had other ideas. His initial requested fine of $25,000 went up to five percent of his whopping $3 million purse for UFC 202.

The Irish star thought they would respect his agreement, but instead ‘fired the rounds off first’ in his opinion. That established, McGregor wished the NSAC good luck in obtaining the money from him:

“I thought they might respect [me calling in] a little bit more. I owned up. I manned up. I’m here. I apologized. I’m not trying to blame nobody, although they fired the rounds off first. I didn’t think they would even go that route because I didn’t think this was like a real thing. Are they going to come and arrest me or what the fuck is that? I wanted to give them the respect and I felt they would have respected that but they didn’t. So, whatever. It is what it is. Good luck trying to get it.”

Although he defeated Diaz by close majority decision at the record-breaking UFC 202, both men put on one of the best fights of the year and delivered the reported highest-grossing UFC pay-per-view (PPV) of all time in the process. They obviously made millions in the process, and McGregor doesn’t want Diaz’ money to go the commission just like he doesn’t want to give them his:

“I do not wish to see Nate get any more or any less than me,” McGregor said. “I don’t want to see either of us have something like this happen. But we’ll see. I don’t know. If they went that way on me I don’t know what way they’re going to go on him. He threw the bottle first, but I don’t wish he get more than me or anything like that. I just wish we’d get it sorted out and get on with it and carry on.”

‘Notorious’ offered his own specific view of the scene in closing, reaffirming his wishes at the NSAC actually getting the fine money:

“Respect to them. They wanted me to pay them and work for them at the same time. How can I not respect that? Good luck to them.”

So the gloves are off between Conor McGregor and the NSAC. Let’s just hope there aren’t any loose cans of Monster Energy Drink nearby.

Former longtime UFC light heavyweight champion and former pound-for-pound king Jon “Bones” Jones will become the first UFC fighter to appeal a USADA (United States Anti-Doping Agency) sanction via arbitration, as his his hearing is set for October 31, 2016 in Los Angeles, per MMAFighting.com.

After dealing with a plethora of legal issues that forced him to be stripped of his title during 2015, Jones finally returned to action at April 2016’s UFC 197, scoring a decision victory over Ovince Saint Preux to become the interim 205-pound champion. He was then scheduled to rematch bitter rival Daniel Cormier in a unification bout at July 9’s UFC 200, but he was forced to withdraw just days prior after it was reported that he been flagged for a positive drug test.

Unsurprisingly, Jones denied taking any illegal substances in the aftermath of the news, but the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) made it clear that he had tested positive for two anti-estrogen agents. These substances are known as “specified substances”, which means Jones is facing a maximum one-year suspension from the third party testing organization, although his team has made it clear that they will be fighting the issue in hopes of coming to a settlement agreement.

In addition to his hearing with USADA, “Bones” must also appear before the commission. He was scheduled to meet with the commission earlier this month, but his hearing was rescheduled to November 10, 2016.

What outcome are you expecting from this situation?

Former World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) star CM Punk has come and gone in the UFC’s Octagon, when he got his opportunity to perform on the grandest stage in the sport of mixed martial arts (MMA) when he took on Mickey Gall for his first professional fight.

Punk had spent nearly two years in preparation for the career switch, choosing one of the premier camps the sport has to offer in Roufus Sport to guide him through his new career. ‘The Cult Of Personality’ was called out by impressive welterweight prospect Mickey Gall on an episode of Dana White’s Lookin For A Fight after winning his own first pro MMA bout.

Gall would officially earn the chance to welcome Punk to the Octagon when he submitted Michael Jackson in the first round of their meeting at UFC Fight Night 82 via rear-naked choke. Punk and Gall finally met under the bright lights of the main card of UFC 203 live on pay-per-view (PPV), and the result was what many in the MMA community expected.

Gall took Punk down with ease in the opening seconds of the round, and would smooth his way into locking in a rear-naked choke to force the former professional wrestling star to tap out.

ct-cm-punk-pounded-ufc-debut-20160910-001-1473658444-8001Punk’s head-coach Duke Roufus was in his fighter’s corner for the event, and the transcription for his comments to Punk before, during, and after the contest (courtesy of Bloody Elbow):

Pre-fight:

Roufus: “You got this. I’m so proud of you now. Now remember, keep moving forward. Let’s go for that right hand right away [and] put him on his ass. If it don’t work, put him on the cage. You got this!”

First minute of fight:

Roufus: (CM Punk throws the right hand right away, gets taken down instead) “Alright. Good guard. Breathe. (Corner 2: “Close your guard!”) Relax, relax. Defend. Good, tie him up, tie him up, tie him up. Tie him up, Punk. There you go! (Corner 2: “Work all the way up!) Work the other hand, get the underhook. Underhook, Punk. I need left underhook, Punk! Left underhook. Turn, turn, get that underhook, Punk! Turn into him. On your right hip! On your right hip! On your right hip! (Gall briefly mounts Punk, but Punk turns on his right hip and momentarily escapes.) There you go.”

1:01 – to end of fight (2:14):

Roufus: “There you go, good. Fight the wrists. Hang in there, you’re doing good. Breathe, inch-by-inch. Control the wrist. Control that wrist, you’re good. Good. (Corner 2: “Breathe, you got this.) There you go! You’re good. Fight the hand again. Turn, turn, turn! Other way! Gotta turn the other way, son. (CM Punk turns to his left, has his back taken, flattened out, and takes ground-and-pound from Gall) Move, move! Come up, come up. Gotta roll, gotta roll. Gotta move! You’re good. (Corner 2: “Move, Punk, move.”) Let’s make a move, make a move. (Gall attempts the rear-naked choke) Fight the choke, fight the choke. Fight. Peel the top hand, good, good. Peel the top hand! Good. Peel the top hand. Top hand, Punk! Reach up, both hands (CM Punk taps) awwww. That’s alright. Yup.”

Post-Fight:

Roufus to Punk: “Hey, it’s alright buddy. You did good, alright? It’s all good. All good. Alright? It’s all good, man.”

Roufus to Gall: “Hey Mickey, congratulations champ.”

Gall replies to Roufus: “It’s an honor.”

Roufus replies to Gall: “Oh thanks.”

Roufus to Punk: “It’s alright, man. It’s all good, all good man. It’s a fight, shit happens. Put this on.”

As we previously reported, Russian heavyweight mixed martial arts (MMA) legend Fedor Emelianenko’s daughter was attacked earlier this week on her way home from school by a number of unknown assailants.

The attack occurred just after Fedor’s comments scolding the child MMA fights that were hosted by Head of the Chechen Republic, Ramzan Kadyrov, during a World Fighting Championships of Akhmat (WFCA) event.

In a recent press release on the Chechen government website, Kadyrov called for the perpetrators to be punished ‘to the fullest extent of the law’:

“This is an outrageous incident that needs to be investigated thoroughly and those responsible be punished to the fullest extent of the law. And the judge should not only consider the beating, but also the provocative actions clearly aimed to incite ethnic hatred.

“Hard to believe that the aim was only to put a beating, causing physical pain before robbery. With high probability we can say that the task was to cause a public outcry.”

Shortly after Fedor’s comments condemning the child MMA fights, multiple members of the Akhmat Fight Club (owned by Kadyrov), including well known fighters such as WSOF flyweight champion Magomed Bibulatov and UFC lightweight Khabib Nurmagomedov, showed their support for the child MMA bouts. Interestingly enough, State Duma member Adam Delimkhanov stated in a threatening manner that Fedor would be “held responsible for his words against Kadyrov’s children.”

The comments of these men, however, were shortly removed from social media at the request of Kadyrov, who stated that Fedor had ‘realized his mistake’. It should be noted Fedor’s comments have since been removed from his social media account as well.

“The perpetrator must be found at any cost,” Kadyrov continued in his statement. “In Moscow, surveillance cameras scan every square meter. [Attacker] can and should be sought out. We are also working towards this and are ready to provide maximum assistance.

“People who pose a threat to children must be isolated and not roam the streets leading to schools.”

We’ll keep you updated on the situation as we learn more.

While his return was big, it did have a negative impact on the legacy of former UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar. After his fight with hard-hitting Mark Hunt in a heavyweight bout at UFC 200 this past July, which Lesnar won by decision, it was revealed that Lesnar failed drug tests that were collected on June 28 and July 9. It was rumored that asthma medication might have caused Lesnar’s positive drug tests, but Lesnar has requested tests on both an eye medication and foot cream for clomiphene and clomiphene metabolites.

At this week’s hearing, Lesnar’s attorney advised the Nevada State Athletic Commission of efforts to determine the source of the banned substance. However, at the time of the motion, the efforts for those tests to be done were unsuccessful.

Howard Jacobs, a prominent anti-doping attorney representing Lesnar, wrote a letter that was obtained by MMA Junkie that was dated September 19th.

“We are still investigating this matter (which investigation includes the ongoing testing of products used by Mr. Lesnar prior to the date of the positive test). To provide further detail, I am advised that the testing laboratory (Korva Labs) initially tested an eye medication, which was negative for either clomiphene or clomiphene metabolites. Subsequent testing has been conducted on a foot cream; that testing has included three separate extraction attempts, all of which have failed. A fourth extraction attempt is being made by Korva Labs this week.”

Due to Lesnar’s alleged offense taking place before the commission started using the new anti-doping rules, he is likely to face a lesser punishment compared to what he could have been facing. Usually, a first-time steroid offenders have received a one-year suspension.

“I assure you that we have been diligent in our investigation and testing, and that the requested delay is not being sought for any improper purpose,” wrote Jacobs. “If the hearing can be rescheduled to a mutually agreeable date in November, I am confident that we can be prepared so that the case can be heard on the merits at that time.”

At the NSAC hearing on Monday, they granted Lesnar a continuance after receiving assurance from Jacobs after he said that he would hire local counsel to formally represent the fighter during the hearing.
