When the light shines down on the main event of UFC 205 on November 12th, mixed martial arts (MMA) fans may be witnessing history when it’s all said and done from the Madison Square Garden arena. Then again, they may not.

UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor is attempting to be the first man to hold two belts in different weight classes at the same time when he takes on Eddie Alvarez for the 155-pound title in the main event of the biggest card in UFC history.

McGregor won the 145-pound title back in December of last year when he defeated Jose Aldo in a mere 13-seconds with a perfectly timed counter left hook that shut the Brazilian legend’s lights out. Since then McGregor has embarked on a two fight tenure in the welterweight division in his not so mini-rivalry with Nate Diaz, and will now climb back down to lightweight rather than defend the title he won nearly a year ago.

Alvarez will make his first career UFC title defense against the Irishman, coming off of a miraculous first round knockout win over former champ Rafael dos Anjos to secure his first ever piece of UFC gold.

While a rumored matchup between long-awaited title contender Khabib Nurmagomedov floated around, the Russian was instead put in a matchup with Michael Johnson on the same card and will have to wait just a bit longer before receiving his first shot at UFC gold.

Alvarez recently joined Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour to discuss his upcoming bout with ‘Notorious’, and stated that he doesn’t feel bad for ‘The Eagle’ for once again getting passed up for a title opportunity:

“Nah, I don’t feel bad for fighters. If something tragic happens about his family and things like that I feel terrible. As far as the fight business and what goes on I don’t feel bad for fighters. We play a game, and there are no rules and you gotta learn how to play it. You gotta learn how to play it to the best of your ability. But we’re all in the same game,” Alvarez said.

When asked if he believes Nurmagomedov got ‘played’ after being passed up for the title shot in favor of McGregor, Alvarez had this to say:

“Ya a little bit, yeah. I’d say so.”

Alvarez got his first taste of McGregor’s trash-talk filled lead-up to fight night when the two exchanged words during the UFC 205 press event, to which Alvarez rated his performance on the mic as a ‘five out of ten’:

“Maybe like a five out of ten. I would have like to have been prepared, I wasn’t prepared because we had just made the deal the night before. If I was going into that sort of realm where I know guys talk sh*t, I would have been prepared fully to basically win the whole thing.

“But the fact that I wasn’t sure if I was gonna fight, and the fact that we had just got the deal done, I wasn’t gonna stay up all night making notes, I thought it was more important to just be genuine and say how I felt. Whether it came out however it came out, just say how I felt when I felt it.”

While McGregor made a few jabs at Alvarez taking the fight on his current contract rather than negotiating a new one, ‘The Silent Assassin’ claimed that the deal was simply too sweet to pass up as everything fit into place:

“No, no. I’m happy with the money that I’m ready to make. I don’t think — I think you have to earn the right to be able to draw a line in the sand and say ‘this is what I want.’ And I think fighters need to be prepared to walk if that’s the case. I don’t think this is one I was prepared to walk away from.

I think it’s too sweet. It’s too good of a style matchup, the opponent, the money is good, everything about the fight is good. It wasn’t one I was willing to walk away from at this time. It wasn’t one I was willing to nickel and dime the UFC about — cause I’m negotiating the deal, the deal is good. I’m fine by it.”

conor-mcgregor[1]McGregor and Alvarez would face off for the first time after the press conference, in a rather heated manner after Alvarez poked fun at the featherweight champ once UFC President Dana White handed him his ‘little boy belt’:

“Dana was putting the belt on him, and I told him ‘yeah, give him the little boy belt.’ So he took that little boy belt, and he got mad about that, that pissed him off a little bit that he had the smaller weight class belt. And he puffed his chest out, tightened his pants a little bit, and he got real tall.”

Alvarez was being boo’d by most in attendance for the press event, cheering rather for ‘The Notorious One’ who as always stole the show when give a microphone to spew his brash brilliance.

The lightweight champ, however, claims that those who cheer for the Irish star are mostly made up of fans from the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) and aren’t really educated on the sport of MMA:

“Given the reaction to that crowed, yeah. It kinda was weird, I definitely didn’t expect that as far as the boo’s. It sort of reiterated to me what his fanbase is. His fanbase is him, there are people who — it’s all perception. It seems like he has a lot of WWE fans, like guys who don’t know nothing about fighting at all.

They just like him, so you can have them fans they aren’t the fans I want anyway. I’ll get boo’d all day long because I don’t want a fan who doesn’t know shit about MMA, I rather have a fan who knows the sport, enjoys the sport and can see value.”

Since signing with the UFC in 2014 Alvarez has been in the Octagon with some of the best combatants the world has to offer such as Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone, Gilbert Melendez, Anthony Pettis, and Rafael dos Anjos. Given his extensive resume Alvarez feels little to know threat when standing face-to-face with McGregor ahead of their war:

“Yes, 100%,” Alvarez said. “I think every other one of them opponents that you mentioned, they have a well rounded skill set. Even if the fight goes to another realm of MMA, where your going to standing up, ground, to jiu-jitsu, every one of them is tough. They’re well versed, they can hang with some of the toughest guys in the world in every aspect of the sport. I don’t think he can, from what I’ve seen.

“Not only that, the conditioning aspect, is just not a good level of conditioning. The last Nate Diaz fight was a very big eye opener for me. Usually when I square up with a man, my heart rate goes up, I feel something, I never felt so un-threatened by a human being when I was up on stage with him. That’s the god honest truth, I’ve never felt so un-threatened by another man.”

Conor McGregor..While McGregor is famously credited for his ability to predict the outcomes of his fights right down to a T, Alvarez is reluctant to make a prediction as to how their bout will go down come November 12th as fights are simply too unpredictable to call:

“Man, we’ll have to see. Fight’s are unpredictable, we’re not sure what’s gonna happen. I’d be lying, just like he is, if i went and spit something out. He made his prediction after I got him angry. It’s a tall tale sign that his prediction was forced and wasn’t something he thought, he just made it up because he got angry. You guys will all see the image on November 12th, and it will be a beautiful image.”

McGregor and Alvarez will go head-to-head in the main event of UFC 205 for the lightweight championship live on pay-per-view (PPV), from the Madison Square Garden Arena in New York City on November 12, 2016.

While Conor McGregor has been breaking records left and right with each Octagon appearance in recent months, UFC President Dana White still feels that Ronda Rousey is the biggest star the UFC has ever had.

White appeared on Hot 97 to promote the upcoming debut of the promotion in the state of New York, with their heavily stacked UFC 205: Alvarez vs. McGregor pay-per-view at Madison Square Garden in November, and claimed that Rousey is still “by far” the biggest star in company history.

“By far,” White said of Rousey being the biggest star in UFC history. “Not even close, by far the biggest star ever,” he continued, indicating his belief that “The Notorious” one hasn’t even approached Rousey’s level of fame and recognition worldwide.

To support his claim, White told show hosts the following about the reception Rousey received while in enemy territory in Brazil, fighting Bethe Correia on her home turf and still being the fan-favorite.

“Ronda Rousey is such a big star that when you go down to Brazil,” White began. “I don’t know if you guys have watched any of the fights we do from Brazil, they don’t care who you are, they want the Brazilian to whoop your ass.”

White continued, “When Ronda went down there, they cheered for Ronda over the Brazilian. Never seen that before in my life and will probably never see it again. That’s how big Ronda Rousey is.”

It has yet to be decided when the MMA world will witness the fighting return of the former UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion, as White claimed that she would let him know when she wants to fight again.

He did, however, recently claim that Rousey told him she wanted to fight Cris Cyborg — and would finally be willing to do so at 140 pounds, after insisting on 135 pounds when she was the active champion of the UFC’s Women’s Bantamweight division.

Wonderboy: Rory MacDonald ‘Pretty Much Schooled’ Tyron Woodley

Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson will finally get his shot at UFC gold after leaving a murderer’s row of body trails in his path, having downed elite 170-pounders in the form of former champ Johny Hendricks and two-time title challenger Rory MacDonald. Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson will finally get his shot at UFC gold after leaving a murderer’s row of body trails in his path, having downed elite 170-pounders in the form of former champ Johny Hendricks and two-time title challenger Rory MacDonald.

Thompson will step into the Octagon with current welterweight king Tyron ‘The Chosen One’ Woodley, who is coming off of a fierce first round knockout over Robbie Lawler at UFC 201 to secure the strap, in the co-main event of UFC 205 from Madison Square Garden.

‘Wonderboy’ earned his shot at the 170-pound throne after having put on a beautiful 25-minute performance against the now Bellator bound Rory MacDonald, by earning a unanimous decision decision victory over ‘The Red King’ at UFC Fight Night 89 this past June.

MacDonald has quite the resume himself when it comes to Octagon experience, interestingly enough owning a unanimous decision win over the current champ Woodley from their clash at UFC 174 in 2014.

Thompson recently joined Submission Radio, courtesy of MMA Mania, to discuss his upcoming match-up with Woodley and stated that he already believes he faced the toughest challenge at 170-pounds in the form of MacDonald:

“If you look back at his fights, he doesn’t throw a double or go for the takedown very often. Tyron wants to put those hands on you and wants to try and knock you out. I think once he gets a little frustrated, obviously he’s gonna try and do that, just like everybody else that I’ve faced. I think pretty much the hardest opponent in the division is Rory MacDonald. I mean, Rory pretty much schooled Tyron Woodley. But I can’t take this guy lightly and that’s how I go in looking at this fight.Rory MacDonald vs Stephen Thompson

A lot of people are like, ‘oh man, you’re gonna crush this dude and Tyron Woodley, he smoked him’ and you know what, I don’t think like that. I’m not the type of guy to do that. Because I want to prepare for the best guy, and that’s Tyron Woodley. That’s the guy standing in front of me. I’m preparing myself as if this is going to be the hardest fight that I have ever faced – and it possibly could be. I want to be ready for five, five-minute rounds.”

The 33-year-old former undefeated kickboxer is one of the most feared strikers in the UFC today, and could certainly reign as the next great champion in the welterweight division with a potential win over Woodley in November. Could the Serra-Longo Fight Team product be the next big Georges St-Pierre caliber champ in the UFC? Only time will tell.

Woodley and Thompson will go toe-to-toe in the co-main event of UFC 205 for the welterweight championship live on pay-per-view (PPV), from the Madison Square Garden arena in New York City on November 12, 2016.

Unforntalty, Kirkingburg was pronounced dead on arrival. MMA Fighting is reporting that the UFC has been made aware of Samman’s condition, which is that he is still alive but is fighting for his life while still in critical condition.

Christopher Rothstein, who is a local MMA reporter and ring announcer, issued this statement from Samman’s mother via FOX Sports:

“Josh is still in a coma, and more tests are being done. That is the latest update on my son’s condition,” Samman’s mother said in the statement. “And in spite of speculation, there was no heroin found in Josh’s system whatsoever. No matter what people are posting on social media.

“The reason I am making this statement is, because Josh touched so many lives, and loved inspiring others, especially young people. I don’t want them to lose faith in him, and whatever he brought out in them, because of the lies. He would want them to “never give up.”

Kirkingburg’s fiancee Charlene Cristobal also issued a statement:

“I am extremely heartbroken over the loss of the man who will always be the love of my life,” Cristobal said. “I thank everyone for their support, but ask for privacy for his family and me as we mourn our loss.”

Samman made his UFC debut on the reality show “The Ultimate Fighter” in season 17, which saw interim light heavyweight champion Jon Jones coach Samman. Samman currently holds a 3-2 record in the UFC.

Maia On Standby If Wonderboy Falls Out, Otherwise He Wants Woodley-Thompson Winner

demian-maia

If everything goes as planned, UFC 205 among many other blockbuster fights, will feature UFC Welterweight Champion Tyron Woodley making the first defense of his newly won title against clear-cut number one contender Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson, however if Wonderboy isn’t able to make it to the Octagon on November 12th, Demian Maia will apparently be ready to jump on the opportunity.

Maia’s manager, Eduardo Alonso, noted that after his fighters quick win over former interim UFC Welterweight Champion Carlos Condit, they will be waiting on standby to fill-in for Wonderboy should he get injured in training as fighters often do during the build-up to fights, especially important fights such as once in a lifetime title opportunities.

“A title shot is a unique opportunity you don’t turn down,” Maia’s manager Eduardo Alonso told MMAFighting.com. “But if any injury happens to ‘Wonderboy’ and we get a call, unless Demian is injured, we will take the opportunity because you never know what tomorrow will bring. We see what happened to ‘Jacare’ [Souza], for an example, who unfortunately got injured and couldn’t get his chance. [Michael] Bisping got the chance and became champion, and ‘Jacare’ is still going after his opportunity. You never know what will happen tomorrow. An opportunity like this, you say yes and do your best.”

In the event that Thompson does make it the cage at the event in Madison Square Garden in New York City in November, Maia will be looking to fight whoever emerges from the Woodley-Thompson fight as the UFC Welterweight Champion.

“The idea now is to face the winner of this fight,” Alonso said. “Demian deserved a title shot already, and it’s pretty obvious after this fight that he’s the next in line. I don’t see anyone deserving it more than him. We know that deserving is something relative in the sport today, but we have to find a balance between spectacle and sport. You have to aim for long term credibility as any other sports league, and you need to use meritocracy as one of your criteria.

“You don’t change the Super Bowl, the NBA Finals or the Champions League final simply because one team is more popular or less popular. You set objective criteria. After ‘Wonderboy’ vs. Tyron Woodley, Demian is the next in line no matter what happens in future fights. I believe he will have this opportunity. He deserves it.”
