Who’s next? Maybe a better question for Bill Goldberg these days is what’s next? And the answer is quite a bit.

The former pro-wrestling phenom has hooked up with GLORY kickboxing and will be working for the organization in some capacity moving forward. And yes, that could include Goldberg stepping into the ring for a fight, he told Ariel Helwani on Monday’s edition of The MMA Hour.

Goldberg, 48, said he was already offered a fight with former WWE star Alberto Del Rio at GLORY 21 on May 8 in San Diego, but turned it down because it was too soon. The Southern California resident has not ruled out competing for GLORY at some point, though.

“Whether you see Goldberg hosting the top-10 knockouts, whether you see him a as part of the front office, whether you see him donning the gloves, I’m prepared to do what it takes to get this thing to the forefront, because I think it’s the next thing coming,” Goldberg said.

Goldberg is the co-owner of Extreme Power Gym, a Muay Thai facility in Oceanside, Calif. What many people don’t know is that he has trained in the martial art over the last 10 years and developed a love for it.

“It’s a passion of mine for me,” Goldberg said. “It’s not anything that I’m looking to gain publicity, to strike off the bucket list, to make waves like a CM Punk thing right now. That was never my intention.”

His main goal right now is to draw attention to GLORY, because he believes in the product wholeheartedly. The relationship all started on social media when the GLORY Twitter account responded to a tweet Goldberg made about an event.

“I’d like to bring GLORY and I’d like to bring kickboxing to the forefront like MMA is right now,” he said. “Because I think once people see it, they’re gonna fall in love with it. If I have to be the face of GLORY, if I have to get in the ring for GLORY, I’m gonna do what it takes to get this to the next level. I can guarantee you that.”

For the former WCW and WWE superstar to actually don the gloves and get in there, he said it has to be done right. Goldberg wants to cast a positive light on the sport and one of the reasons he said no to the Del Rio offer was that he wasn’t sure how having two pro wrestlers fighting would be perceived.

“Whether I have a fight right now or not, it’s not gonna change me going into the ring religiously, going into the gym religiously,” Goldberg told Helwani. “It’s my second home now.

“I really love it. I’m not trying to swerve anybody. My ass is in the gym training like I’ve got a fight. If one comes to fruition, if in the cards it is a possible thing to do for the elevation of GLORY kickboxing, then ill set up a training camp and you’ll be the first person to know.”

Goldberg said he does private sessions three times per week and spars on the weekends. The former pro football player said it’s his way of staying active and competing though his days as a professional athlete are over. At least, mostly. Goldberg is definitely considering a GLORY fight if it makes sense.

“I think if it’s done properly, if it’s a kick in the pants and it’s a positive for the business,” he said. “If it’s done negatively, then it’s gonna do nothing but kick it back a notch and I don’t want to be associated with anything that’s not done properly.”

Right now, though, he’ll be hosting GLORY’s top-10 knockout show Friday night on Spike TV. Goldberg is going to be involved with GLORY, in some way, moving forward. They’re still ironing out all the details.

Goldberg uses Melvin Manhoef as the example of what GLORY means to him.

“Every single time he goes out and he puts the gloves on, you know his opponent is getting knocked out or he’s getting knocked out,” Goldberg said. “And that’s the type of fight you have in GLORY each and every fight. If I can lend myself to a promotion and do whatever it takes to get that promotion in front of more eyes in getting it to the forefront of combat sports, I’m more than willing to do that.”

Joanna Jedrzejczyk vs. Rose Namajunas Could Be a Dream Matchup In a Year or Two

Rose Namajunas has been called the “next Ronda Rousey” by the bantamweight champ herself, according to Elias Cepeda of Yahoo. All of her professional wins and her victories on The Ultimate Fighter 20 have come via submission, including a 12-second win via flying armbar.

However, her loss to Carla Esparza in the TUF 20 finale put a little dent into her billing as the next great female fighter.

On the flip side, Joanna Jedrzejczyk burst onto the scene out of nowhere. Her upset of Claudia Gadelha in her second UFC fight put her in title contention. At UFC 185, she demonstrated her amazing hand speed and takedown defense in a rout over Esparza to become the new strawweight champion.

Jedrzejczyk and Namajunas are probably the two most exciting fighters in the women’s strawweight division. Allowing Namajunas to develop her fight game could make a Jedrzejczyk vs. Namajunas matchup a highly anticipated one in a year or two.

Gadelha’s match against Jedrzejczyk demonstrated the one flaw in the Polish fighter’s style, which is her susceptibility to takedowns when against the cage. The only successful takedown that Esparza had at UFC 185 was when she was able to push Jedrzejczyk to the cage. As a submission artist, if Namajunas can get the strawweight champion to the ground and keep her there, she should have a good chance of executing a submission.

However, getting a takedown on Jedrzejczyk isn’t easy. She has excellent takedown defense, and even if you do take her down, she will make you work to keep her there. She is strong and can eventually get to her feet and force an opponent to fight her game. Also, her match against Gadelha showcased her ability to fight off submission attempts.

Can Namajunas get Jedrzejczyk into a flying armbar? Possibly. But that involves getting into a thai clinch with her. And Jedrzejczyk has demonstrated if you try to get inside on her, she’ll make you pay.

However, Namajunas does have a chin. In her loss against Tecia Torres, she ate many of Torres’ shots and kept moving forward. She’s definitely not afraid to keep a fight standing and trade shots if necessary. If she could take some shots from Jedrzejczyk and keep moving forward, that could frustrate the champion.

Maybe all it takes for Namajunas is time. She is only 22 years old and has a long career ahead of her. And she has the mental tools to become an elite MMA fighter.

She handled her loss against Esparza with maturity and grace, as she called the loss “an investment in her future,” according to MMAJunkie.com

Namajunas further elaborated on her loss on The MMA Hour, telling Ariel Helwani, “I kinda went in there crazy with emotion, like a young kid.”

After her loss to Esparza, it seems the pressure is off Namajunas. She can now focus on developing her arsenal to make a run for the title.

When she does get there, her showdown against Jedrzejczyk should provide fireworks.

In combat sports, it takes the two individuals in the fight to create special moments. Mixed martial arts has seen its fair share of those moments to build some of the stars that we see today. Joanna Jedrzejczyk and Rose Namajunas are two strawweights with the potential to develop star power. In a few years, this may be the matchup that fans are pining to see.

Jedrzejczyk burst onto the scene with her one-sided smashing of Carla Esparza at UFC 185. This win allowed her to snatch away the 115-pound title and vault to the top of the division. As that group continues to flush itself out, she will be in need of a long list of challengers to establish her prominence.

Namajunas can insert her name into that position, even at this early point in the 22-year-old’s career.

Bleacher Report Lead MMA Writer Jeremy Botter chronicled her rise to becoming a new star in the sport, writing “from a fighting perspective, Namajunas has traveled a profound distance in a very short period of time.”

If that growth continues for both of these women, Namajunas and Jedrzejczyk could be headed for a showdown.

The strawweight division has a lot of work to do to sort itself out. Claudia Gadelha seems to be one of the next women in line, but she is set to face Aisling Daly at a UFC Fight Night on April 11. Jedrzejczyk has already defeated the Brazilian competitor, but the Nova Uniao product fought the current champion in a tough battle. Beyond Gadelha, the 115-pound group does not feature a fighter who stands out in front of the others as an immediate challenger to the title.

The rest of the division features women who were competed on the 20th season of The Ultimate Fighter. That season was made up of mostly developing fighters who were still working to build their professional resumes. Namajunas established herself as one of the best within that group, even though she was unable to defeat Esparza in the final bout.

The UFC currently ranks Namajunas as the No. 4 fighter in the division. Remaining successful will help her to stay within the title picture at this vital juncture.

Both Jedrzejczyk and Namajunas have room to develop their brands both inside and out of the cage. As MMA continues to grow as a mainstream sport, fighters who are successful in competition and within marketing are leading the way to new opportunities. If both women continue to win, fans may soon begin to call for Jedrzejczyk to defend her title against the woman known as “Thug.”

Jose Aldo versus Conor McGregor at UFC 189 will be one of the biggest fights of the year, and even Thiago Silva of Paris Saint-Germain and Brazil has an opinion on the July bout.

The defender was heard talking to compatriot Aldo in a video montage of the fighters’ promotional tour. Speaking in less than flattering terms about the Irishman, he said: “Dude, you have to finish him. He’s such a douchebag. He’s got to fall and never get back up, that motherf—-r.”

Aldo agrees with the sentiment, saying: “I’m going to release the beast on him.”
