Manager: Tate Turned Down Holm Rematch At UFC 200 For “Weaker Opponent”

Apparently UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion Miesha Tate took the Amanda Nunes fight at UFC 200 instead of accepting the challenge of an immediate rematch at the landmark event against former champion Holly Holm.

In speaking with The Albuquerque Journal this week, Holm’s manager, Lenny Fresquez, claimed that his fighter would soon be returning to the Octagon in a non-title fight, but that it’s only because “Cupcake” Tate took a “weaker opponent” for her first title defense..

“They tell me Tate chose (Nunes),” Fresquez told the Journal on Thursday in a phone interview. “Holly was offered to her and she chose Nunes. She chose to take a weaker opponent.

“She’s not as stand-up as Holly. She said she’d take on the best, but she’s not willing to take on the best. Holly gave her a chance. We’re pretty disappointed she didn’t return the favor.”

Troubled former UFC light heavyweight champion Jon “Bones” Jones has been to the highest of highs to the lowest of lows during his life and career.

In early 2015, Jones was alleged to be involved in a hit and run car accident. A crime that resulted in the UFC stripping him of the light heavyweight title and suspending him indefinitely. In September Jones plead guilty to one felony count of leaving the scene of a crash, which resulted in Jones being convicted of a 4th-degree felony. He will have supervised probation for up to 18 months. The judge ordered Jones to make 72 appearances as part of his probation.

Jones was then jailed last week due to violating his probation standards after receiving multiple traffic violations.

Still Jones is one of the most popular and best fighters the UFC currently has under contract. Jones recently spoke with Rolling Stone about his troubles. When asked about his hit and run car accident, Jones said he wanted to retire from MMA.

“I wanted to retire. I wanted to quit. I wanted to go away. I wanted to move to Mexico. I wanted to erase my Twitter, Instagram and Facebook so no one would be able to see me,” he says. “I wanted to never do an interview again. I wanted my fans to think, ‘What ever happened to Jon Jones?’ I wanted to disappear from celebrity life all together.”

“It was a reality check,” he says. “That’s really what it all boils down to for me. It was the day that I realized that life wasn’t all fun and games, there are consequences for your actions.”

When asked about how his life went downhill, Jones blames it on people and self-medicating.

“I really started to get money, started to be able to afford to go out, to have a good time and buy people drinks,” he says. “Growing up, I was poor. In college I was poor. I never had anything. Then I go from living in a basement to renting out a house. My life just started to change so fast.”

“I’ve been slowly self-destructing,” he says. “Self-medicating myself, smoking pot all day. Most people don’t look at pot as a problem. ‘Oh, it’s just pot. It’s going to be legal soon. How can you be a pot addict?’ The truth is, you can be a pot addict. If that’s what you do when you wake up, before you play video games, before you train, before you study footage, before you go to sleep, you’re smoking weed all day long.

“I had a problem self-medicating myself and not dealing with real emotions. I got in the limelight at a young age. At age 19, people were already comparing me to Anderson Silva. I had two brothers that were destined to be in the NFL. I knew I never wanted to be the brother that wasn’t a pro athlete,” he continues. “There’s pressure to be one of the successful brothers [and] not the one that didn’t make it. I always put pressure on myself. I think somewhere along the line my relationship with marijuana just got stronger and stronger, and it was something I depended on and leaned on.”

Jones is set to fight No. 6-ranked Ovince St. Preux at UFC 197.

Sorry “Cowboy,” maybe next time.

UFC on FOX 19 — which is set to pop off on Sat., April 16, 2016 from Tampa, Florida — suffered yet another crucial blow after one half of he headlining act, Tony Ferguson, was forced to bow out of his lightweight fight against Khabib Nurmagomedov with fluid and blood in his lungs.

Get the full details here.

There was no shortage of fighters ready and willing to step in to fight Khabib, but in the end, newcomer Darrell Horcher has agreed to replace “El Cucuy” on just two weeks notice to face “The Eagle” at a catchweight bout of 160 pounds.

That said, the Rashad Evans versus Glover Teixeira light heavyweight fight will still serve as the event’s headlining act while Dan Henderson and Lyoto Machida run it back again in main card action.

Mighty Mouse’s reaction to TUF 24 title shot: ‘That’s kind of f**ked up’ for current flyweights

Flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson’s reacts to the winner of TUF 24 getting an automatic UFC title shot.

It was announced earlier this week that season 24 of The Ultimate Fighter would feature Flyweights. The special catch for the season is a throwback to season 4 of TUF. The winner of the show will get a guaranteed title fight against the UFC flyweight champion.

The current champion, Demetrious Johnson, was aware that the newest season would feature flyweights, but wasn’t aware of the stipulation. While streaming live on Twitch, he was given the news through his chat feed. (Starts at 4:20)

“Is that true? Well look at that. That’s interesting,” Johnson reacted when first hearing the news. “Oh wow. That’s crazy. That’s super weird. So the winner would face the champion. Joseph [Benavidez] should enter the contest!”

Johnson was caught off guard by the news. While collecting his thoughts, he realized what implications the season would have on his division.

“That’s super crazy. That’s super odd. That’s kind of fucked up for all the other guys that have been in the division for a long time. I have to read that again, that’s very odd. I’m confused a little bit, very confused.”

After finding a news article and reading it out loud to his viewers, Johnson was able to comprehend the situation, but still had questions about the season.

“That’s super interesting though because I feel like if I was in the UFC and I wasn’t the champion that I would jump on the show and get released from my contract. So what about the current flyweight contenders? No matter how amazing they perform, they’re not getting the shot.”

Mighty Mouse clarified later that the news won’t change much for him and that his single focus is on fighting.

“But, UFC does what they want. I just worry about myself. I just fight and that’s what I do.”

Johnson’s next fight takes place on April 23rd at UFC 197 against #2 contender Henry Cejudo. The card is headlined by an interim Light Heavyweight title fight between Jon Jones and Ovince Saint Preux.

Highly ranked UFC lightweight contender Khabib “The Eagle” Nurmagomedov has been on the sidelines for the last two years nursing multiple injuries.

The undefeated Dagestani born combatant was scheduled to make his anticipated return to action at the upcoming UFC on FOX 19 card in Tampa, Florida in a pivotal bout opposite surging contender Tony “El Cucuy” Ferguson.

The bout, which was set to serve as the evening’s (April 16, 2016) main event, fell through earlier this week, however, when Ferguson was forced to withdraw with a lung injury.

Originally, it was thought that Nurmagomedov would be pulled from the card completely, as finding an opponent to face him on such short notice would be a daunting task.

Unsurprisingly, however, Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone, who is known for his anytime, anywhere attitude, voiced his interest in fighting “The Eagle”.

It appeared last night (April 6, 2016), as if both men had verbally agreed to the bout which is why it may be shocking to learn today that Nurmagomedov will be remaining on the card and taking on UFC newcomer Darrell Horcher in a catchweight bout.

FOX Sports confirmed the news earlier today (April 7, 2016).

Horcher has won his last five bouts including his latest two by way of stoppage, but it’s undoubtedly odd to see him take on one of the best lightweights in the world in his promotional debut.

No matter the opponent, “The Eagle” simply wanted to fight:

“I don’t fight for two years. I need to feel blood, I need to feel the cage, I am ready go,” Nurmagomedov said. “My mind says ‘hey, you have to fight next Saturday’. This is everything.”

Thoughts?

Bob Arum: UFC fans are voting for Donald Trump to help save white America

Fossilized fight promoter Bob Arum, who insists mixed martial arts (MMA) is for skinheads and homosexuals, is also convinced that Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) fans will be voting for Donald Trump in the upcoming presidential election.

Why?

“The fans of the UFC are Donald Trump supporters,” Arum told Fight Hub TV. “Fans of boxing support Hillary (Clinton), Bernie (Sanders), maybe John Casey, so there’s a difference. UFC fans are Trump supporters, white males who are desperately afraid that this country in 20 years will be a non-white majority country.”

Former UFC middleweight contender Chael Sonnen might want to think twice about that Trump vote.

Even though he was forced to go on record to profess his love for UFC, Arum is a longtime hater of MMA, probably because Dana White and Co. took a big bite out of the combat sports business, which has long been dominated by the “sweet science.”

I think this guy said it best.
