Sean Strickland admits he was thrown off a bit during his UFC Vegas 47 fight against Jack Hermansson.

On Saturday at UFC Vegas 47, Sean Strickland extended his win streak to six. “Tarzan” emerged victorious in his second Fight Night headliner by defeating Jack Hermansson via split decision.

But as the 30-year-old told Michael Bisping in the Octagon interview, it wasn’t exactly a performance to be proud of.

“I fought like a chump that fight, I’m sorry guys. I should’ve stayed in the pocket and thrown more, but lesson learned. It won’t happen again.”

During the media scrum, Strickland admitted he was a bit thrown off by a pre-fight conversation he had with “fancy folk in the suits,” who are likely some members of the UFC’s top management.

“I get a lot of fancy f—rs wearing suits, and they come up to me and they start talking about title fights and things of that nature,” he told the media. “You hear that all the time, and you start thinking, ‘Do I really want to risk getting knocked out when I can go for a title fight?’

“So I let the fancy folk in the suits throw me off a little bit. But it won’t happen again.

“They start talking about, like, bonuses and wins and half my pay, man. I want a title shot. I don’t want to go in there potentially get knocked out. Everybody will be, like, ‘Hey Sean, you’re a f—ng nobody.’ I’m gonna see you guys in the hall, and you’re gonna act like you don’t f—ng know me anymore ’til the next time I fight.”

Strickland is slowly gaining attention, partly because of his antics outside the cage. But he sees the fan recognition as something to be thankful for, and he has this message to his supporters.

“Here’s the thing about the fans: you guys are cancerous little f—ng assholes, and the moment I lose, I’m a piece of shit and a loser,” Strickland said. “I guarantee I’m gonna get ‘Oh, Sean’s a f—ng loser. He didn’t finish Jack.’

“But at the end of the day, I still f—ng love you guys. I f—ng love you guys. You’re the reason why I got a job. Even if you sit there and you’re f—ng on your little thumbs and your little tweet o’Tweet, never been in a f—ng fight in your life. But at the end of the day, you’re the reason why I have a career and a paycheck. So thank you, you bastards.”

With the win over Hermansson, Strickland now improves to a record of 25-3. He hopes to get a title shot next, but as a self-proclaimed company man, he says he’s willing to fight whoever is put in front of him.

Sean Strickland feels he’s done enough for a matchup with Israel Adesanya, but will understand if he needs one more win at middleweight.

Strickland used his boxing and torrid pace to outlast Jack Hermansson at UFC Vegas 47. Hermansson couldn’t get Strickland to the ground and Strickland was able to outclass him on the feet.

Strickland is in an interesting position in the middleweight title picture. While he’s undefeated since moving from welterweight to middleweight, he arguably didn’t put on enough of a show-stopping performance to earn the next title shot.

Derek Brunson and Jared Cannonier will fight on the UFC 271 main card, while Adesanya will face Robert Whittaker in a title rematch. Depending on how things play out, the winner of those two matchups could fight against one another next.

During his UFC Vegas 47 post-fight press conference, Strickland kept things in perspective as he moves closer to a shot at the belt.

Sean Strickland Makes Case For Next Title Shot

“At the end of the day, if f**king Izzy wins, if Cannonier wins, then Cannonier’s probably next,” Strickland said. “But he’s already ran through the division, let’s get some fresh blood in there. We don’t want to see another repeat. Let’s see a white trash motherf**ker get a crack at it.”

With the win over Hermansson, Strickland has now won six straight since moving back to 185 pounds. He’s earned knockout wins over Brendan Allen and Nordine Taleb while outpassing fighters such as Uriah Hall and Krzysztof Jotko.

One thing that Strickland does have going for him moving forward is his ability to market himself and his fights. This could be a welcomed opponent as Adesanya or Whittaker get ready to make their next title defense following UFC 271.

It’s unclear what’s next for Strickland, but he’s clearly the dark horse of the middleweight title picture and could get a No. 1 title contender fight next, at the worst.

Check out which fighters won performance bonuses from UFC Vegas 47: Hermansson vs. Strickland

The APEX Center in Las Vegas, Nevada was home to a great evening of fights at UFC Vegas 47: Hermansson vs. Strickland. The card saw four (T)KOs, three submissions and six decisions, including three split-decisions.

POTN: Shavkat Rakhmonov & Chidi Njokuani

FOTN: Julian Erosa vs. Steven Peterson

The preliminary card opened with a quick submission win for Malcolm Gordon when Denys Bondar suffered an elbow injury less than 90 seconds into the fight. Phillip Rowe, not to be outdone, scored a nice TKO win over Jason Witt in the second round. Continuing with the theme of the night, Jailton Almeida defeated Danilo Marques via TKO in just under three minutes. Alexis Davis showed she still has plenty left in the tank when she defeated Julija Stoliarenko via unanimous decision. Chidi Njokuani needed just 16 seconds to starch Marc-André Barriault’s collar. Hakeem Dawodu and Michael Trizano put on a fun scrap but it would be Hakeem Dowadu taking the lopsided unanimous decision. John Castaneda proved to be too much for Miles Johns when he submitted him in the third with a tight arm triangle to wrap the first half of the card.

Preliminary card

  • John Castaneda def. Miles Johns by technical submission (arm-triangle choke) at 1:38 of round 3
  • Hakeem Dawodu vs. Mike Trizano by unanimous decision (30-27 x3)
  • Chidi Njokuani def. Marc-André Barriault by KO (punches) at :16 of round 1
  • Alexis Davis def. Julija Stoliarenko by unanimous decision (29-27, 29-27, 30-27)
  • Jailton Almeida def. Danilo Marques by TKO (punches) at 2:57 of round 1
  • Phillip Rowe def. Jason Witt by TKO (punches) at 2:15 of round 2
  • Malcolm Gordon def. Denys Bondar by submission (elbow injury) at 1:22 of round 1

The main card opened with a sensational battle between Julian Erosa and Steven Petersen that saw both men have their moments, and with enough blood to supply a vampire’s fridge. The split-decision would go to Erosa, much to the chagrin of Petersen. That was followed by Tresean Gore and Bryan Battle putting on another exciting scrap, but in the end, the unanimous decision would go to Battle. Side note: Battle’s right eye was swollen completely shut by the end. Brendan Allen and Sam Alvey’s fight looked like it might be headed to a decision, with the first round punctuated mostly by tentative exchanges and occasional winging shots, but Allen turned the tide in the second round when he secured a rear-naked choke that forced Alvey to tap, and in doing so, becomes the first man in three years to finish the smiling veteran, now winless in eight consecutive fights. Shavkat Rakhmonov only needed 4:10 to finish Carlston Harris via KO and he made it look easy, beginning the sequence with a spinning wheel kick and finishing with a barrage of punches, at one point bouncing Harris’ head off the canvas. He moves to a perfect 15-0 with 15 finishes. IMPRESSIVE!

Puna Soriano and Nick Maximov had an interesting co-main event with tons of wrestling scrambles punctuated by the occasional big punch that left Maximov’s face a bloody mess and Puna with a mangled leg. When the cards were announced, it would be Nick Maximov taking the split-decision. Sean Strickland and Jack Hermansson put on a boring jabfest in the main event that somehow ended in a split-decision, despite Strickland clearly winning the vast majority of the fight with that methodic jab.

Main Card

  • Sean Strickland def. Jack Hermansson via split-decision (49-46, 47-48, 49-46)
  • Nick Maximov def. Punahele Soriano by split decision (28-29, 30-27, 29-28)
  • Shavkat Rakhmonov def. Carlston Harris by KO (spinning hook kick and punches) at 4:10 of round 1
  • Brendan Allen def. Sam Alvey by submission (rear-naked choke) at 2:10 of round 2
  • Bryan Battle def. Tresean Gore by unanimous decision (29-28 x3)
  • Julian Erosa def. Steven Peterson by split decision (28-29, 29-28, 29-28)

The UFC Vegas 47 bonuses have been released.

The event took place in Las Vegas, Nevada at the UFC Apex facility. Headlining the card was a middleweight clash between Jack Hermansson and Sean Strickland. This fight didn’t have the ingredients of a great fight if not even a good fight.

It was lacking pace with Jack not being able to get takedowns as he would like and couldn’t find his range. Sean was finding a home for his jabs throughout it and looked fresh throughout the entire fight without taking damage. Sean was doing a good job of keeping up on the scorecards, but for a guy who is trying to make a title run, he didn’t do anything to be memorable. Strickland got the win by decision.

The co-main event saw more action between Punahele Soriano and Nick Maximov. It went the distance as the first round saw Soriano caught him with a big knee strike to the jaw, but Nick went for a takedown and failed to get it. He did jump on Soriano’s back to go for a choke, but didn’t get it.

In the second round, Nick continued to work for takedowns and got them, but he couldn’t keep him there. Moving along to the third round, Nick got a takedown and kept him there for the remainder of the fight to get the decision win.

Count it six straight victories for the #7 ranked UFC middleweight contender, Sean Strickland, who outpoints Jack Hermansson over the course of five rounds for an admittedly dubious split decision (49-46, 47-48, 49-46) victory in the main event of UFC Vegas 47.

Adding Swedish-born contender, Hermansson to a list of victims at middleweight including the likes of Uriah Hall, Brendan Allen, and Jack Marshman, Strickland managed to successfully defend no less than seven takedown attempts over the course of the five round headliner.

Utilizing an ever-present jab which really made waves last July against the above mentioned, Hall, Strickland, a staple of Xtreme Couture under Eric Nicksick in ‘Sin City’ — managed to evade a lot of winging and misfiring efforts from Hermansson from the second round onwards, largely comfortably outstriking the former Cage Warriors champion.

Following his victory, Strickland who is set to leapfrog Hermansson into the #6 rank at middleweight at least, called for a middleweight title opportunity against the victor of next weekend’s UFC 271 headliner between champion, Israel Adesanya, and former champion, Robert Whittaker.

Below, catch the highlights from Sean Strickland’s split decision triumph over Jack Hermansson
