Former UFC featherweight champion, Jose Aldo seems to be all in for a potential April showdown against former bantamweight titleholder, Cody Garbrandt — urging the Ohio puncher to sign the contract after a recent callout was issued to him.

Scoring his first victory since his move to 135-pounds back in December of 2019, Manaus favourite, Aldo snapped a three-fight skid — besting Ecuadorian finisher, Marlon Vera over three-rounds at UFC Vegas 17 in December.

Returning to winning ways, Aldo had dropped his final featherweight appearance to now-champion, Alexander Volkanovski in a hometown affair, prior to a close decision defeat to compatriot, Marlon Moraes at UFC 245.

Despite recent form, the veteran striker was inserted into a vacant bantamweight title fight at UFC 251 on ‘Fight Island’ last July, succumbing to fifth rounds strikes when paired with promotional-perfect standout, Petr Yan.

For former division kingpin, Garbrandt, a recent move to New Jersey to take his camp under the scrutiny of Mark Henry — brought with it a snapping of his own three-fight slide. Dropping the bantamweight crown to former teammate, T.J. Dillashaw at UFC 217 — Garbrandt would go on to suffer two consecutive knockout defeats to Dillashaw once again, before a first-round stoppage loss to Aldo’s compatriot, Pedro Munhoz.

Set to finally return after a debilitating case of COVID-19 as well as suffering a torn vein in his bicep which led to multiple blood clots, Garbrandt recently called for an April showcase against Aldo.

I am creating the life of my dreams,” Garbrandt wrote. “Excited to get back in that steel cage @josealdojunior (Jose Aldo) how’s April sound? #VisionQuest

In response to Garbrandt, Aldo posted a story on his official Instagram account, gauging the fan interest in a potential matchup against the former champion — before urging him to “sign the contract“.

Echoing Aldo’s calls for contracst to be issued, Garbrandt asked UFC president, Dana White to put the fight together.

We doing this @josealdojunior @danawhite?? We both say send the contract.

Following his highlight-reel, buzzer-beating knockout of Raphael Assuncao at UFC 250 in June, Garbrandt was expected to challenge Deiveson Figueiredo for the undisputed flyweight title at UFC 255 in November, until Alex Perez replaced him on short-notice amid his novel coronavirus and bicep injury issues — with his flyweight division bow put on the backburner as a resultAldo.

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) continues to tighten up its roster as it makes room for a new crop of mixed martial arts (MMA) hopefuls by way of Dana White’s “Contender Series,” which has not been shy about putting pen to paper.

The following fighters are no longer under contract with UFC, according to MMA Junkie:

Aleksandra Albu (3-2 MMA, 2-2 UFC)
Ali Alqaisi (8-5 MMA, 0-2 UFC)
Cyril Asker (9-4 MMA, 2-3 UFC)
Alex Chambers (5-5 MMA, 1-4 UFC)
Chris De La Rocha (5-3 MMA, 1-3 UFC)
Syuri Kondo (6-3 MMA, 1-3 UFC)
Bojan Mihajlovic (10-6 MMA, 0-3 UFC)
Suman Mokhtarian (8-2 MMA, 0-2 UFC)

None of these releases come as much of a surprise based on their UFC records.

At this point it’s fair to assume that UFC will continue to part ways with fighters — or not re-sign combatants who are performing below expectations — on a more regular basis. The promotion regularly cycles in new talent and that requires existing athletes (like this guy) to say goodbye.

The bantamweight contender is sporting a hole in the middle of his forehead. A hole.

You knew it was coming. As the resident gore expert around here, it is my job to bring you the worst of the worst in mixed martial arts injuries, so I am presenting you with the most recent one courtesy of UFC bantamweight Brian “Boom” Kelleher.

Kelleher competed at UFC 258 last Saturday against Ricky Simón and lost by way of unanimous decision after 15 minutes. Simón controlled the fight with relentless pressure and wrestling, which saw Kelleher on his back defending submission attempts for most of their shared time in the Octagon.

Kelleher may have been busy dealing with Simón and his constant attacks, but that was not the only thing he had to worry about. Early in the fight, Simón landed an elbow from guard during an exchange on the ground and opened up a brutal cut right in the center of Kelleher’s forehead.

After being sliced open, Kelleher was pushed up against the fence while being squeezed by Simón and blood started pouring out of the fresh wound. As bad as it looked on the broadcast, the severity of the injury was not truly understood until a few days after the fight.

Kelleher took to Twitter on Tuesday evening to share a photo of himself in the process of getting stitched up and it is not a pretty sight to behold. To be as blunt and dramatic as possible, it appears as though we are looking directly into Kelleher’s brain through this quarter-sized hole in his head.

(Warning: Graphic photo ahead. Proceed with caution.)

“Scar too deep for a bandaid solution,” wrote Kelleher alongside the photo.

A bandaid is definitely not covering that up. Kelleher did not share how many stitches he needed to close the hole, but we imagine it must have been quite a few.

The reaction from fans was mixed, with some of them gagging at the sight and others posting their own photos of what the cut reminded them off. A personal favorite came from this Twitter user, who photoshopped a newborn Xenomorph from the horror movie Alien bursting out of Kelleher’s forehead like the famed chestburster scene. 10/10 for creativity.

There is no timetable as far as his return goes, but hopefully Kelleher does not need a lot of time away and we see him back sooner than later.

Bryan Caraway has been accused of insurance fraud and first-degree theft over an ATV owned by Miesha Tate.

The Tri-City Herald reports that former UFC fighter Bryan Caraway has been charged with insurance fraud over a saga involving an ATV that belongs to his former girlfriend Miesha Tate.

The charge against Caraway stems from allegations that he forged the title for a 2015 Polaris RZR all-terrain vehicle replacing Tate’s name with his own and that he falsely claimed the vehicle was stolen.

Authorities state that Caraway reported the ATV as being stolen, a few days after buying an insurance policy on the vehicle. In his theft claim to the insurers Caraway reported that the vehicle and its contents, which included helmets, a battery charger and a spare tire, were worth $18,500.

Caraway is also reportedly under investigation for grand larceny on suspicion that he stole the ATV, on two separate occasions, from Tate’s Las Vegas property.

During an insurance investigation Caraway told investigators that Tate gave him the ATV when they broke up in 2017. Tate told investigators she never sold or gifted the vehicle to Caraway.

At one point during the investigation Caraway is alleged to have told an investigator that he wanted to “strangle” Tate and steal the vehicle back.

Caraway is accused of claiming the ATV was stolen after Tate picked the vehicle up, along with a trailer, from a home they once shared in Richland, WA. Caraway claimed he had no idea who had taken the ATV.

In February 2019 surveillance video allegedly captured Caraway stealing the ATV from Tate’s property. The vehicle was later found in the garage of Caraway’s current girlfriend. Las Vegas police located and returned the vehicle to Tate.

It is alleged that, two weeks later, Caraway was again captured on surveillance footage stealing the vehicle from Tate’s property.

Due to these allegations, and a missed court date, Caraway was briefly placed on Washington State’s Office of the Insurance Commissioner’s Most Wanted list.

Caraway was removed from the list after he contacted the Benton County Prosecutor’s Office to arrange a new arraignment date.

He is now schedule to appear in court on March to enter a plea regarding charges of forgery, making a false statement on a vehicle application certificate of title, false claims of proof in excess of $1,500 and first-degree attempted theft.

Caraway joined the UFC through The Ultimate Fighter: Team Bisping vs. Team Miller in 2011. His pro Octagon debut was a submission win over Dustin Neace on that series finale. Caraway would go 6-4 in the UFC with wins over Aljamain Sterling and Eddie Wineland. He ended his time with the UFC after back-to-back losses to Cody Stamann and Pedro Munhoz in 2018.

In 2019 he signed for South Korean promotion Battlefield FC.

Ahead of his UFC Vegas 19 headliner this weekend at the UFC Apex facility, #2 ranked heavyweight contender, Curtis Blaydes has questioned opponent, Derrick Lewis’ commitment to training — as well as posing the inquiry if he’s got as much respect for mixed martial arts as him.

Blaydes, who makes his second trip to the Apex facility in Nevada, has won his last four consecutively — most recently knocking back recent UFC Vegas 18 main event feature, Alexander Volkov last June in a wrestling clinic where he scored fourteen successful shots over the five-round affair.

Poised to challenge for Octagon gold in the not too distant future with a victory, although accepting that his chance will come after division newcomer, former two-time light heavyweight best, Jon Jones challenges — Blaydes has recovered with aplomb since his second career loss to UFC 260 title chaser, Francis Ngannou back in November of 2018.

Rescheduled to draw one-time title challenger, Lewis this weekend — the duo were initially slated to take main event status at UFC Vegas 15 in November until Blaydes was forced to withdraw from the matchup during fight week after he provided a positive COVID-19 test result. Lewis was ultimately removed from proceedings entirely, with former light heavyweight title challenger, Anthony Smith submitting Devin Clark in a promoted headlining bout.

Speaking with ESPN MMA reporter, Ariel Helwani prior to this weekend’s outing, Blaydes, claimed that he doesn’t view Lewis’ persona on the same level as former interim welterweight champion, Colby Covington, however, he made it clear that he doesn’t believe the New Orleans native trains or respects the fight game on a similar level to him.

He’s (Derrick Lewis) — I don’t have any reason to call him a bad guy,” Blaydes said. “I haven’t seen anything that would point to that, but I do think his humour is a little like low-hanging fruit. Like, ‘I’m tryna be the big guy’ and make the weak, easy jokes like, ‘my balls was hot’ and stuff like that. I wouldn’t do that, that’s not my type of personality, but I’m not hating on him — that’s one of his shticks, it’s not hurting nobody.

He’s not Colby Covington so I have no problem with him,” Blaydes explained. “I just — I don’t think he puts in the work. And I don’t think he respects the game the way I do, ’cause I’ve seen in a couple of interviews — he works out once or twice a week. I don’t know if that was because he had a back injury or if that’s just like a preference thing, but — I just don’t think he’s putting in the work to be great, that a lot of other guys are putting in to be great.

Blaydes, who plys his trade at altitude at Elevation Fight Team in Denver, Colorado — shares the mats with former interim lightweight champion, Justin Gaethje and current undisputed welterweight best, Kamaru Usman to name a few — and questioned if Lewis puts in the same amount of work like those guys.

I’m putting in that work and I see a lot of guys at Elevation (Fight Team) — I see the type of work that’s needed to be great,” Bladyes said. “I watch (Justin) Gaethje, I watch (Kamaru) Usman, I watch Neil Magny like — I don’t think he’s working like that. I’m working like that, I don’t think he’s working like that.

Prior to his win over former Bellator and M-1 Global heavyweight champion, Volkov, Juco national champion, Blaydes has stopped former champion, Junior dos Santos and common-foe, Shamil Abdurakhimov, after a unanimous judging win over Justin Willis.

Scoring a record-breaking knockout win in his last outing at UFC Vegas 6 in August — Lewis became the most prolific knockout-finisher in the history of the promotion’s heavyweight ranks, sealing his astonishing eleventh stoppage win with strikes via his triumph over Aleksei Oleinik.
