How many sports movies can you name off of the top of your head? It doesn’t matter how old the film is or what its target demographic may be.

From Raging Bull to The Sandlot to Any Given Sunday, Hollywood has done a great job of creating characters who go on to live in our minds as sports heroes.

Now, answer that same question, but only name movies about mixed martial arts.

While sports like football and baseball have a long relationship with moviegoers, it has been less than a decade since big-budget movies about legitimate mixed martial arts competition have been around.

Things have changed. Actors like Kevin James, Terrence Howard and Channing Tatum have been part of the move towards mainstream and with legitimate Hollywood A-listers on board, the continued growth of MMA is undisputable.

With the James-led Here Comes The Boom currently in theaters, we’ve decided to take a look at the best characters from Hollywood that would make great fighters.

Jon Jones and Chael Sonnen To Coach Ultimate Fighter 17, Title Fight in April

Heading into UFC 153, the news on everyone’s lips was that Jon Jones had finally seemed to come around to the idea of fighting Chael Sonnen. Now, it appears that fight will become a certainty.

The light heavyweight champion and his loud-mouthed nemesis will spend several weeks together coaching opposing teams on the long-running reality program, The Ultimate Fighter, according to a report from Lance Pugmire of LATimes.com.

After the show’s filming has concluded, the duo will square off at an unnamed event on April 27, 2013.

This is great news for The Ultimate Fighter, as ratings hit a new low with last week’s episode. Can you imagine the trash talk that Chael Sonnen will deliver over the course of a 12-week television program?

The 17th season of the show will begin filming later this month and will air beginning in January. It is notable that TUF has not started airing a season of the show in January since the inaugural season back in 2005.

To those living under a rock, the beef between Jones and Sonnen began in late August, when Sonnen’s Team Quest teammate Dan Henderson was forced out of a scheduled fight with the champion. Sonnen attempted to step in on short notice, but Jones refused to fight the former middleweight with only one week to prepare a game plan.

The move drew the ire of UFC President Dana White, who was forced to cancel UFC 151 due to the absence of a PPV-worthy main event.

In declining the replacement bout, Jones explained that he wasn’t fully comfortable risking the belt against the 35-year-old skilled wrestler with a relentless, attacking style that nearly allowed him to upset middleweight champion Anderson Silva in 2010.

How deep will Sonnen get under the skin of Jonny Bones while filming the show? Will this be the jolt that brings The Ultimate Fighter‘s ratings back to life?

UFC 153 has come and gone, and the hometown fans in Rio de Janeiro couldn’t be more pleased. With big wins from Anderson Silva, Minotauro Nogueira and Demian Maia bringing the Brazilian audience to their feet, it was certainly an electric atmosphere for anyone lucky enough to be in attendance.

Now that we have a few weeks until our next UFC event, let’s have a quick look at UFC 153 and how it stacked up to other events this year.

This analysis does not look at the caliber of fighters on the event as much as the quality of fights that fans were treated to. Think of this as a “was it worth your money” sort of read.

Fabio Maldonado might just be the Terminator. You can batter him with punches, smash him with elbows or dip him into a pool of any lava-hot fluid you want*, but he is going to keep coming at you.

For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. With light heavyweight monster Glover Teixeira showing the world how much damage he can cause, Maldonado might have absorbed more damage than any human who has ever remained conscious.

This display of toughness was incredible and should earn Maldonado another fight in the UFC despite his current three-fight losing streak.

Here is a look at five fights for Fabio Maldonado to take next.

The co-main event of UFC 153 was a heavyweight confrontation between former world champion and MMA legend Minotauro Nogueira and Dave “Pee Wee” Herman.

Surprising to many, Herman was able to reverse a Nogueira takedown attempt into a judo throw. Quickly standing up after the toss, Herman made no mistake about showing us that he wanted no part of “Big Nog’s” grappling.

With the whizzer to keep this fight standing, Herman was able to dictate the fight’s location, and kickbox against the Brazilian. Even with the takedowns of his opponent nullified, Herman would be unable to stay on his feet, as Nogueira would send him to the floor with a huge shot early in the second round.

To the surprise of many, Herman was able to defend an Americana and then escape a spiderweb position that threatened an armbar before getting back to his feet.

Nogueira would score a takedown in the round’s final minute, and finally earned the submission after Herman was unable to roll his way out of danger. The armbar might have shattered Herman’s arm, but it definitely shattered his ridiculous claim that “jiu-jitsu doesn’t work.”

Minotauro has alternated wins and losses in his past seven contests, and at 36 years old, it’s anyone’s guess how much more the legend has in the tank.

This is the third consecutive loss for Herman, and all three came via stoppage, although this is the first time in his career that “Pee Wee” has been submitted.
