There’s absolutely no denying that Anthony “Rumble” Johnson is a lethal and powerful force in the UFC Welterweight division.  He brings strength and size unheard of in the division.  Physically, he’s a man among boys.  But that’s physically.

Throughout his career, Johnson has had various troubles that negate his size and strength.  As Dana White often alludes to, Johnson has a rough time making weight.  This often indicates a lack of discipline.  If you can’t make the necessary dietary changes to make weight comfortably when the time comes, how disciplined can you be when asked to execute a game plan against a top-10 opponent?  That’s a mental breakdown that can’t happen if one seriously intends on contending for a title.

Rumble also has problems with his submission defense.  He’s lost three times in his career.  One time was a horrible TKO lose due to being poked in the eye—similar to the lone loss on Jon Jones’ record (disqualification due to illegal elbow strikes) in that it doesn’t count to the viewing public.  However, his other two loses do count.

Guess how those fights ended.

Submission losses.

Rumble must shore up his submission defense.  I would actually suggest leaving the tutelage of Cung Le’s AKA for something with more of a Brazilian Jiu-Jistu base.  With that knowledge he can defend submissions and keep the fight standing, where he’s most comfortable.

He also has to beat a couple of prominent contenders to even be considered.  Picture this: If Johnson fought Jake Ellenberger and crushed him, then fought Jon Fitch and beat him, we would all be screaming for him to get a title shot against Georges St-Pierre (if he retains the title).  Two prominent victories are all that stand between him and a title shot.

Now, can he get those matchups?  That remains to be seen.

At UFC Live on Versus 6, Dominick “The Dominator” Cruz showed why he is the bantamweight king.  Normally Cruz uses angles, quickness and superior striking to subdue opponents.  When he saw that using these traits would quickly lead to a loss, he did what all champions must do at some point in a successful reign.

He adjusted.

He came to the realization that his challenger, Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson, was faster than him, but he also realized that he was stronger than the natural flyweight-sized competitor.  He used his size and strength to literally throw Johnson around the ring en route to a unanimous decision.

This brought up the obvious question.

Has he actually done what Dana White always says Georges St-Pierre and Anderson Silva need to do?

Did he clean out the division?

UFC 141: 3 Reasons Jon Fitch Should Not Overlook Johny Hendricks

Jon Fitch is arguably the No. 2 welterweight in the UFC.  The Gray Maynard of the welterweight division, he’s fought some of the sport’s best, including B.J. Penn, Georges St-Pierre and Thiago Alves.  He’s made it very clear to matchmaker Joe Silva and head man Dana White that he only wanted to fight either Penn or GSP.  When that didn’t come to fruition, he opted to agree to what some saw as a tune-up fight versus Johny Hendricks at UFC 141.

One problem with that:

Hendricks is a hot welterweight looking for a three-fight win streak (including a knockout of the night win over TJ Waldburger at UFC Fight Night 24) to add to his fabulous record of 11-1.  He’s not whom Fitch would want as a tune-up for a title shot.

With nothing to lose and everything to gain, Hendricks looks to move into contender status with an upset of Fitch.  But how will he do it?  Let’s take an in depth look at the man known as the “Happy Beard Guy.”

Jake Shields has had a terrible past few weeks.

His father and manager sadly passed away on Aug. 29, and he was stopped for the first time in his career.  Clearly he needs to regroup before he steps back into the octagon to try to bring his UFC record back to .500.

When the time comes to step back in the cage, Shields will most likely be demoted to fighting on the main card, much to his dismay.  He will also be demoted to fighting middle of the pack welterweights in an effort to prove that he is worthy to fight another title contender.

Who will show up in the next fight?  Shields the Strikeforce champion welterweight, or the Shields that can’t deal with strong stand-up?  Here are some matchups that may be able to help figure that out…

Can you say fight of the night?

Fireworks exploded in the first seconds of Round 1 as both men were dazed by the time the clock reached 30 seconds.

Brent Weedman took control of the grappling initially, but Chris Lozano dumped him with a massive slam. Weedman reciprocated as Lozano gave up his back, which seemed to be a theme for this fight, and desperately sought out a rear-naked choke for the remainder of the first round.

The second round was a slug-fest with Lozano’s technical striking ruling the day, as he dazed Weedman quite a few times. However Weedman’s fighting spirit wouldn’t allow him to waiver as he walked forward taking punch after punch.

Both men’s conditioning came into play as they both seemed to wobble after launching offensive assaults, though Lozano’s punching power put him over the top in Round 2.

Round 3 was truly “survival of the fittest” as both fighters attacked with their strikes. However, once again Lozano was getting the best of Weedman in the boxing arena. Lozano attempted a spinning heel kick that Weedman avoided, but as his back was turned Weedman secured Lozano from behind and proceeded with a takedown.

Lozano fought off a rear-naked choke attempt and completed a short-lived sweep of Weedman in an attempt to get back to his feet. The third round ended with Lozano still on top in the striking area with Weedman taking control on the ground whenever the opportunity arose.

Chris Lozano was awarded a well-deserved decision in a fight that was definitely the best fight of the televised card. He will be a formidable opponent for whoever he crosses in the quarterfinals.
