After an uneventful start to the evening, UFC 145 lived up to the hype by delivering some wildly entertaining fights.

The main event between Jon Jones and Rashad Evans was obviously great, but it wasn’t the only bout that warrants mention. From intense marathon battles, to brutal knockouts, the night was full of incredible fights.

Here are the top three from UFC 145.

Matt Brown vs. Stephen Thompson

This was easily the best fight of the prelims, as middleweight contender Rousimar Palhares said.

In a beautiful contrast of styles, “The Immortal” repeatedly took Thompson—the former kickboxer—to the canvas. From there, he put on a ground-and-pound clinic, landing blow after blow to Thompson’s head.

Despite some knockout-worthy strikes from both fighters and a few near submissions by Brown, this fight went the distance. Brown won by unanimous decision (30-27, 29-27, 30-27), but it wasn’t as lopsided as the scorecards suggest.

Thompson unleashed some deadly strikes throughout the fight, living up to his reputation as one of the best stand-up fighters in the sport. He wore Thompson down and had a chance to end the fight in the second round, but he failed to capitalize.

In the end, Brown outclassed him on the ground, earning the 14th victory of his UFC career.

Eddie Yagin vs. Mark Hominick

In the most controversial decision of the night, Eddie Yagin was awarded the split decision victory (29-28, 28-29, 29-28) over Hominick.

Yagin came out with a bang, knocking Hominick to the floor with a deadly uppercut just halfway through the first round. In the second, he had another chance to end the fight after leveling Hominick with a big right hook.

However, Hominick recovered well from the vicious hits. He outperformed Yagin for the majority of the fight, and eventually inflicted as much physical damage as his opponent.

Unfortunately for Hominick, the judges rewarded Yagin for his two big strikes, even though he fought a sloppy overall fight and telegraphed nearly every move.

The loss is Hominick’s third in a row, and should squash his bid for a rematch against Jose Aldo.

Jon Jones vs. Rashad Evans

No matter who you were rooting for in this fight, you had to appreciate the sight of two masters executing their craft.

Evans and Jones are two of the best fighters in MMA history, and their skills were on full display Saturday night. Eventually, Jon Jones won by unanimous decision.

Jones was throwing elbows like Charles Barkley, and it seemed as if every one found its target. The constant blows wore down Evans, and he looked defeated after the third round.

Evans was a little tentative in the fight, which is something I never thought I would say. Of course, that’s what the problem that is Jon Jones will do to you. Jones has every weapon an MMA fighter can possess, and there’s simply no way to beat him at this point.

Last night, Evans got caught in an unenviable position: either stay on the outside and let Jones tee off with kicks, or crowd him and eat elbows all day long.

He chose to try a little of both, but everything he did just resulted in more punishment.

It was yet another masterpiece from Jones, who is quickly rising up the ranks of the all-time greats.

UFC 143 Results: Josh Koscheck Proves He Deserves Another Shot at Title

Josh Koscheck survived a three-round grapple-fest with Mike Pierce at UFC 143 to stay in the hunt for the welterweight title.

The fight was basically what we expected to see from the two elite wrestlers. They spent much of the match either up against the cage or on the mat. Both had control at one point or another but eventually, Koscheck was awarded the split decision.

It wasn’t an emphatic victory by any means, but it would have been unrealistic to expect Pierce to get knocked out or submitted. Every fight he’s lost has gone the distance.

Although it wasn’t spectacular, it was exactly what Koscheck needed. He didn’t have to make a statement against Pierce, he just had to survive. Now he’s in prime position to get a title shot in late 2012 or early 2013.

Barring some unforeseen setback, Koshceck will fight either Carlos Condit or Nick Diaz in his next fight. If he wins that, he will get his second chance to fight for the UFC welterweight throne.

Koscheck improved to 17-5 with his victory over Pierce. The 35-year-old has drastically improved his striking ability and, outside of Georges St. Pierre, I don’t think anybody in the welterweight division can touch him.

GSP is the only fighter to beat Koscheck since early 2009, and although Koscheck has already lost twice to the Canadian machine, he deserves another title shot, regardless of who’s holding the belt.

It certainly wasn’t pretty, but Koscheck’s victory over Pierce put him exactly where he needs to be.

Dustin Poirier moved one step closer to a featherweight title shot by submitting Max Holloway in the first round at UFC 143

Poirier took advantage of the inexperienced Holloway, dominating him on the ground before earning his second straight victory by submission.

Poirier initially had Holloway in an armbar, but the 20-year-old was able to worm his way out. However, it was only a matter of seconds before Poirier submitted him with a mounted triangle armbar.

It was Poirier‘s fifth submission victory, and the seventh fight that he finished in the first round. He improved to 12-1 (4-0 in UFC) and set himself up for higher-profile fights in the future.

Coming into UFC 143, Poirier was the 11th-ranked fighter in the featherweight division (according to Fight Matrix). He was originally supposed to fight No. 9 Erik Koch, but an injury forced Holloway to step in.

Although this win won’t have the same effect as if he’d beaten Koch, it was yet another reminder that the 23-year-old Poirier is for real. His Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is reaching elite status and he can change a fight in an instant with his striking power.

Poirier already has impressive victories over Josh Grispi, Jason Young and Pablo Garza. With his continuous ascent up the featherweight rankings, it’s only a matter of time before he places himself in the discussion with with Kenny Florian and Chad Mendes as the top contenders for Jose Aldo’s throne.

UFC on FOX 2 Results: Phil Davis Has Bright Future Despite Loss to Rashad Evans

Although he got taken to school by Rashad Evans Saturday night, Phil Davis will be a force to be reckoned with in the UFC’s light heavyweight division.

In the UFC’s second outing on FOX, Evans, the much more experienced fighter, was in control from start to finish. All three judges awarded all five rounds to Evans in a unanimous 50-45 victory.

Despite the lopsided defeat, Davis has a bright future in mixed martial arts.

This was only the first loss of his professional career, dropping him to 9-1 (5-1 in the UFC). Though he’s relatively inexperienced, he’s already registered wins over Brian Stann, Alexander Gustaffson, Tim Boetsch and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira.

He tried to take down his first elite opponent in Evans, but the former champ picked him apart. Still, Davis is bursting with potential.

Standing at 6’2″ and 205 pounds, Davis is an absolute physical specimen. He’s fast, explosive, and with his massive wingspan, he’ll have a reach advantage over anybody not named Jon Jones.

He’s also a highly skilled wrestler, as evidenced by his impressive collegiate career at Penn State. Davis was a four-time NCAA All-American and won the 2008 national championship at 197 pounds. He hasn’t knocked anybody out in the UFC yet, but if his striking ever catches up to his grappling, he will be incredibly dangerous.

His loss to Evans was a little disheartening, but it will only make him better. The only way to improve is by taking on the best, and if your record gets blemished in the process, so be it.

At 27 years old, Davis is just now entering the prime of his career. If he steadily improves over the next few years, he will capture the light heavyweight crown before he calls it a career.

Chael Sonnen set up an epic middleweight title clash with Anderson Silva after defeating Michael Bisping on Saturday night.

Sonnen won by unanimous decision, using his world-class wrestling ability to control the overwhelmed Bisping. It wasn’t a dominant victory, but it was enough to secure another shot at Silva’s throne.

Sonnen almost took Silva’s belt in August 2010, but The Spider pulled off an improbable victory. Sonnen was less than two minutes away from winning the title when Silva miraculously submitted him with a triangle armbar.

Unfortunately for Sonnen, his quest for a rematch was delayed by a year-long suspension. But after disposing of Brian Stann in October and Bisping on Saturday, he’s finally ready for another showdown with the king.

This matchup is an MMA lover’s dream, as Sonnen is the only fighter to test Silva during his current reign of dominance.

Silva has won 15 fights in a row, including all 14 of his bouts in the UFC. During that time, he has defended his title nine times and knocked out or submitted 13 of his opponents.

Silva has beaten everyone the UFC has thrown at him, and he’s taken almost all of them out convincingly. The lone exception, of course, is Sonnen.

Sonnen’s in-your-face style and wrestling skills are problematic for Silva. After his strong performance in their first fight, he should also carry plenty of confidence into the rematch.

I’m expecting Silva to prevail again, but it sure as hell won’t be easy. Sonnen is an incredibly dangerous fighter, and as he proved in 2010, he’s capable of beating anyone.

There’s no official date set, but Silva-Sonnen 2 will be one of the most anticipated sporting events of 2012.

With one powerful spinning hook kick, Edson Barboza put an exclamation point on his victory over Terry Etim at UFC 142.

Barboza was in control throughout the fight, but he was eagerly searching for his first knockout win since November 2010. He got what he was looking for midway through the third round.

A worn down Etim dropped his hands and Barboza was quick to capitalize. The lightning-quick Brazilian unleashed a vicious spinning hook kick, firmly planting his heel on Etim’s cheek.

With the victory, Barboza improved to 10-0 and proved that he deserves more high-profile fights. According to Fight Matrix, the 25-year-old phenom is only the 53rd-ranked lightweight in mixed martial arts. After his performance on Saturday, you can expect him to skyrocket up those rankings.

Barboza is a 5’11”, 155-pound fighter with a purple belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu and a black belt in Muay Thai. His Muay Thai background was evident in his fight with Etim, as he ripped off several brutal leg kicks to zap the energy of his opponent.

Barboza is still a little raw, but he possesses every tool necessary to become a superstar in the UFC. After destroying Etim at UFC 142, he took a big step in the right direction.

Barboza was clearly the better fighter on Saturday and Dana White should do him a favor by making sure he gets paired with higher-profile fighters in the future.

Over the next few years, Barboza will rise from talented prospect to legit contender. The UFC just has to give him a chance first.
