With the possible exception of Chan Sung Jung himself, perhaps no one was more excited to see “The Korean Zombie” use the twister to submit Leonard Garcia at UFC Fight Night 24 than Eddie Bravo – the grappler who’s credited with bringing the move to prominence in MMA and jiu-jitsu competitions.

“I was blown away,” Bravo told MMA Fighting. “It was surreal.”

Bravo has been teaching the twister – along with other mainstays of his style, such as the rubber guard – out of his 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu school in southern California for years. But Jung’s use of the move marked the first time a UFC fight was ever finished with the twister. Considering where Bravo first learned it, he said, the fact that it took this long to be used in MMA’s largest organization might be the most surprising part of the story.

If ever there was an event to make aspiring fighters get out their singlets and focus on their wrestling skills, UFC Fight Night 24 was it.

The ability to successfully complete and/or defend the takedown was the deciding factor in most of the fights on Saturday night. By the end, I think half the arena had unconsciously learned how to shoot a single-leg just from seeing it done over and over and over again. Bet that made for some interesting after-parties.

So who were the biggest winners, losers, and everything in between after Saturday night’s wrestle-fest? The answers await you below.

SEATTLE, Wash. — This is the UFC Fight Night 24 live blog for Leonard Garcia vs. Chan Sung Jung, a featherweight bout on tonight’s UFC on Spike TV event at the Key Arena.

Garcia (15-6-1) defeated Nam Phan last December in another controversial split decision. Chan (10-3) lost via head kick knockout last September to George Roop at WEC 51. This bout is a rematch from WEC 48 where Garcia emerged victorious in a split decision.

The live blog is below.

Remember when Anthony Johnson said there was “absolutely no chance” he and Dan Hardy would go to the ground in their fight at UFC Fight Night 24? Yeah, well. About that.

Johnson spent most of the three rounds either taking Hardy down or grinding away at him from the top position, turning what had seemed like a slugfest on paper into a grappling match in the cage. It might not have been the most popular decision he could have made, but it resulted in a unanimous decision win for “Rumble,” so you can’t argue with the results.

“I knew I could bang with him,” Johnson said at Saturday night’s post-fight press conference. “That was no problem. I knew I could do that, but I knew his weakness was his wrestling, and I know that’s one of my strengths. I just took it to my advantage and used it.”

SEATTLE – To put things in perspective, here’s what Phil Davis did at UFC Fight Night 24 on Saturday night: he stepped up and took a much tougher fight than the one he was originally slated for, much sooner than he was originally training for. Then he won a clear-cut, if not spectacular unanimous decision over an MMA vet with nearly three times as much experience as him in the cage.

To understand the boos from the crowd and the mild disappointment from fans, we should also probably mention what he didn’t do: walk on water.

Maybe Davis was a victim of the UFC’s hype machine, or maybe the specter of new light heavyweight champ Jon Jones still loomed too largely in too many minds on Saturday night. Whatever the cause, in victory Davis found out that it’s not quite enough to be merely very, very good when people, rather rightly or wrongly, expect you to be incredible.

SEATTLE – Phil Davis improved to 9-0 with a unanimous decision win over Antonio Rogerio Nogueira at UFC Fight Night 24, but that doesn’t mean he’s going to start calling for a title shot just yet.

Yes, it was the most significant win of his career so far, Davis acknowledged at the post-fight press conference, but he’s in no hurry to jump all the way to the top of the light heavyweight ladder.

“Pretty much everyone I’ve ever fought has had more experience than I have in fighting,” said Davis. “So just going through four fights in one year in the UFC has put me in a place where everyone is a lot more experienced than I am, so I just need to make sure I’m giving myself enough time to develop as a fighter.”
