Chael Sonnen on Anderson Silva: I’ll Slap Him and Dump a Coke on Him

Chael Sonnen continues to pull out every trick in the book in attempts of getting Anderson Silva to agree to fight him Super Bowl weekend in early 2012.

Sonnen took it a step further when he was live on the Jim Rome Show (video above) and addressed his current dilemma with Silva.

“I’m not going to quit picking a fight with him and I’m not sorry for any of it,” Sonnen stated.

In shock, Rome fired back with several questions for Sonnen:

“You’re picking a fight with this guy? You’re calling this guy out? Will you get him to fight you? Will he accept?”

It didn’t take Sonnen long to turn the question back around on Silva.

“Is he going to take the fight? No,” Sonnen said. “Is Dana (White) going to make him take the fight? Yes, absolutely. Dana picks the fights—not Anderson.”

This isn’t the first time Sonnen has called out Silva on national television. Following his victory over Brian Stann at UFC 136, Sonnen was quick to address Silva and challenge him to a “loser leaves town” fight.

Rome questioned Sonnen to what he would have done if Silva would have done this to him.

“I would come over the guard rail,” Sonnen said. “I would have walked up those little steps. I would have gotten in the Octagon, and taken the microphone out of his hand, and shoved it straight down his throat.”

A bit harsh.

While Sonnen was quick to address his much-desired rematch with Silva, he wasn’t so fast to discuss his lost to Silva at UFC 117.

When Rome attempted to question being submitted in the fifth and final round of action against Silva the first time around, Sonnen quickly changed the subject and laughed.

Sonnen one-upped himself when Rome asked if there was anything left he could do to get Silva to fight him.

Sonnen’s response? “I’ll slap Anderson the next time I see him.”

“That might be the only way to get it done,” Rome stated. “You have to throw a drink in his face; you’ve got to slap him in the face—you have to do something like that.”

Sonnen cheerfully agreed:

“I don’t know what to do—I was going to dump a Coke on him one time. He was right next to me one time and the waitress just brought me a Coke. If I thought he was worth a buck-fifty. I would have done it.”

If for some reason White doesn’t have these two squaring off, a slap in the face and a dumped Coke just might be enough.

UFC 137: How Does GSP Injury Affect a Potential Superfight with Anderson Silva?

Since entering the UFC, Anderson Silva and George St-Pierre have dominated nearly every opponent that’s come their way.

Silva, arguably the greatest fighter to have ever stepped foot on earth hasn’t ever lost inside a UFC Octagon posting a perfect 14-0 record.

Similar to Silva, St-Pierre has been just as dominant winning 16 of his 18 career UFC bouts including six consecutive title defenses.

Because of their opponent’s inability to dethrone either Silva or St-Pierre, UFC fans began begging for a super fight between the two.

St-Pierre set conditions that needed to be met in order for the two to square off in what could be the most anticipated bout in UFC history.

But, the so-called “super fight” is beginning to fall to pieces.

Silva, who’s already been ruled out until early 2012 due to an injury, is set to square off with Chael Sonnen in his return.

In order for a super fight to occur, Silva would have to defeat Sonnen and St-Pierre would need to defeat Carlos Condit in a championship bout at UFC 137.

But, that all changed when Dana White tweeted that St-Pierre was pulled from the fight card due to a knee injury he sustained while training for Condit.

While White went on to state that St-Pierre is expected to be out for a few months, the earliest we could expect to see St-Pierre is late January to early February.

Now, St-Pierre won’t be stepping foot inside the Octagon for at least a few more months, which makes the possibility of a super fight even more doubtful than before.

Why?

With both of the UFC’s top two fighters going down with injuries, it’s unlikely White would allow the two to square off in just their second fight back.

And, for the super fight to even occur, St-Pierre has already demanded that the UFC give him a reasonable amount of time to gain the necessary weight to fight Silva.

He also stated Silva would not be able to fight during that time frame as a loss would demolish any hopes of a potential super fight.

With both Silva and St-Pierre out with injuries and no definite time table set for their return, it’s unlikely fans will witness the “dreamed about” super fight any time soon.

George St-Pierre: "I Cried Yesterday"

George St-Pierre was just a little over a week away from squaring off with Carlos Condit in a welterweight title fight at UFC 137 when his world was turned upside down.

While going through his regular routine in preparations for the main event bout in Las Vegas, St-Pierre injured his knee.

UFC president Dana White later broke the news via Twitter, stating:

I just land in NYC and what do I always say!? I have to deal with bad s— everyday!! GSP is out with an injury!!! #oneofthosedays

While St-Pierre is set to return as soon as January or February of 2012, he’s sadly overwhelmed with his circumstances.

St.Pierre told SportsNets:

I’m not going to lie, I cried yesterday. I had a ton of pressure falling off my shoulders, because for the last few days I was in the mindset that I was nervous for the fight. I was excited for the fight but I was also nervous to know if I was going to be able to fight.

St-Pierre will now take the time off to rehab his injured knee and possibly take a vacation.

Luckily for the welterweight champion, he won’t have to change his training strategies, as White has already stated he’ll sit Condit and wait for St-Pierre to get healthy.

One thing’s for sure: We won’t see St-Pierre again until he’s at full health or close to it.

In regards to making a full recovery, St-Pierre stated:

The recovery I want to do it well, I don’t want to do it too fast. Because now I had an injury and I tried to train on it and maybe made it a little bit worse. I need a good four weeks to do my physio and do it right.

Despite unfortunate circumstances, we will see the normal St-Pierre back in action in early 2012.

Nick Diaz has done it again.

The UFC held a media conference call for UFC 137: Penn vs. Diaz this afternoon at 2:00 p.m. ET.

The media call was set to consist of BJ Penn, Nick Diaz, Cheick Kongo and Matt Mitrione.

When the media call went underway, Diaz was not present.

When asked if Diaz would be present at some point throughout the conference, UFC correspondents responded:

“We’re not sure, we are in the process of locating Diaz now.”

Surprise, surprise, surprise.

About 45 minutes after the media call began, Diaz showed up and was immediately asked why he was late.

Diaz responded, stating:

“I had no idea about a call. No one called me this week or told me anything.”

While no one knows the real reason why Diaz was late for the media call, UFC fans won’t find this news surprising at all.

Will this be the last straw for Nick Diaz?

Over the past several years, mixed martial arts has soared through the roof and has become the world’s fastest growing sport.

Specifically, the UFC has become the center stage for all fighters across the globe.

And a major reason for the UFC’s success is due to the world-class athletes that devote their lives to the sport of MMA.

However, behind every powerful organization is the engine that makes the company go.

The UFC’s engine is Dana White, who is unarguably the most influential person in the sport of mixed martial arts today.

Not only is White an overwhelming influence on the UFC, but to the rest of the world.

White’s hard work and dedication recently paid off when he was selected as one of the most influential men on the planet by AskMen.

White ranked 38th on AskMen’s Top 49 Influential Men Survey.

While White has slipped from previous years (No. 32 last year, No. 9 in 2009) down to the 38th position, he still considers it a great honor.

“I’m honored for even being thought of for a third time, especially for the fact that readers have voted for this,” White said.

What makes White’s selection even more meaningful is the simple fact that more than 500,000 individuals cast their votes for this award.

White continues to be the centerpiece for one of the world’s fastest growing organizations.
