Mike “Quick” Swick was out of the Octagon for over two years until he returned successfully this Saturday night on UFC on Fox 4 against DeMarques Johnson.

Johnson gave Swick a scare in the opening round as he mounted The Ultimate Fighter Season 1 veteran and began to try to assert his ground-and-pound game.

Swick covered up and defended as best he could while on his back. Johnson tried to lock Swift into a chokehold, but Swick wouldn’t allow his foe the leverage necessary to finish the job.

Swick sustained some hard blows and suffered a lot of facial damage going into the second round.

Swick’s determination to do something impressive could be sensed as he walked out for the next round.

In a matter of moments, Swick knocked Johnson onto his back and delivered a perfectly timed right hand after dropping to the mat to capitalize on the situation.

The first right hand brought the full weight of Swick’s body from standing position down to the ground, wobbling Johnson’s face against the canvas.

Johnson was out cold.

The following two rights pounded Johnson’s head against the mat before the referee stepped in to call this welterweight contest to a halt.

Swick improved to 15-4 with eight wins coming by way of knockout as Johnson fell to 16-11 with four of those losses coming within the distance.

UFC on Fox 4: Could the Rua-Vera or Machida-Bader Winner Face Gustafsson Next?

As Shogun Rua, Brandon Vera, Lyoto Machida and Ryan Bader go into battle this Saturday, many fans and members of the media will ponder where exactly the four warriors will go when it’s all over.

Depending on who wins most impressively, the Rua versus Vera winner or the Machida versus Bader winner will earn a No. 1 contender spot to face light heavyweight champion Jon Jones.

But what of the winner who is not chosen? Could there be a constellation prize to earn them the next No. 1 contender position? How about Alexander Gustafsson, the big kid without an elite name.

UFC president Dan White has recently told publications that Gustafsson is in for a “big fight.” Could White have been coy about who the opponent would be because this Saturday will have the answer?

If Jones, the champion, will get the most impressive of the two winners, then it only makes sense that Gustafsson would be tested against the less-impressive winner.

A Jones versus Gustafsson match has been billed as being the last light heavyweight fight that could have some intrigue, but Gustafsson is still too unproven to be put in with a beast such as Jones.

If Gustafsson could pass the test of the winner of either Rua-Vera or Machida-Bader, he most certainly will have convinced a good deal of skeptics that he is ready to battle Jones.

Mauricio “Shogun” Rua could land a fight with the winner of Jon Jones vs. Dan Henderson if he performs well on Saturday against Brandon Vera.

This undoubtedly has produced a collective groan by the UFC community of fans who want compelling matchups.

But these groans come with the assumption that Jones will get past Henderson. Yes, light heavyweight champ Jones has dismembered Vera and Shogun, among others.

Does that mean that Jones won’t get caught by the legendary chin-bulldozer that is Henderson’s fist? Absolutely not.

Rashad Evans, though faster than Henderson, has shown that Jones can get caught. Lyoto Machida also has shown that Jones can get caught, and all it takes is one punch from Henderson.

With all that said, the best possible match that can come out of this arms race for the next light heavyweight championship showdown is a rematch between Shogun Rua and Henderson.

Here’s why.
