Tim Sylvia Stops Paul Buentello; Jens Pulver Takes Another Loss

If you checked out the official “War on the Mainland” website as you possibly hummed and hawed about ordering last night’s PPV, you might have thought to yourself ‘ah–they probably just skimmed on the site a little bit to throw more dough on the PPV’. Well, if you took in last night’s broadcast, it didn’t […]

If you checked out the official “War on the Mainland” website as you possibly hummed and hawed about ordering last night’s PPV, you might have thought to yourself ‘ah–they probably just skimmed on the site a little bit to throw more dough on the PPV’. Well, if you took in last night’s broadcast, it didn’t take long to have that notion completely refuted did it? (Unless you don’t care for graphics and production values that are post 1993—then you were probably stoked)

Wondering if you had been transported back a decade plus aside, War on the Mainland did feature some pretty sweet bouts, including the Matt Horwich / Thales Leites fight which was great (Horwich won the middleweight title by 4th round submission) and Tony Lopez KOíng Jason Lambert with a knee to take the light-heavyweight belt.

In the main event tilt between Tim Sylvia and Paul Buentello (which only added to the night’s ‘nostalgic’ feel of course), the former UFC heavyweight champ added another belt to his trophy case, by dropping Buentello in the second round. Sylvia’s first title defence? None other than Mr. Pedro Rizzo…okay,  granted, there’s a bit of a ‘classic’s theme going here but we’ll still check it out.

And apparently having BJ Penn loathe him all these years wasn’t the reason behind Jens Pulver’s ongoing woes. As we passed along Friday, Penn apologized to Pulver last week for all the naughty things he’s said about the former champ, but the veteran still couldn’t end his losing streak. After getting dropped by Diego Garijo, Pulver got caught with a follow up guillotine choke—dude’s lost 6 straight.

Report: Ben Saunders Cut by the UFC

If someone approached you last November and told you that in less than one year’s time, Ben Saunders would no longer be in the UFC, you probably would have told that person they were out of their damn mind (unless of course that person had just stepped out of steaming hot DeLorean). If someone approached you last November and told you that in less than one year’s time, Ben Saunders would no longer be in the UFC, you probably would have told that person they were out of their damn mind (unless of course that person had just stepped out of steaming hot DeLorean). What went down in November? Saunders KO’d Marcus Davis with a series of ‘close your eyes kids” knees, at UFC 106, to run his Octagon record to 4-1. Things were looking swell for the “Killa B.”

Well unfortunately for the American Top Team welterweight, since then Saunders has gone 0-2, losing to Jon Fitch by UD (which most expected), and most recently at UFC 117, he dropped another decision to the vet Dennis Hallman (that likely surprised a few people). In this business of ‘what have you done for me lately?’, Saunders has apparently announced via his Facebook account, that he’s been cut by the UFC. (Thanks to Bloody Elbow for the quote)

“Sorry everyone I tried to fight my best these past two fights but ended up getting out worked. The UFC has officially cut me. The good news is they told me to work on my wrestling and ground game and then come back. So that is all I am going to be doing, improving dramatically and show them I belong.”

Based off some of Saunder’s earlier performances, cue footage of win over Brandon Wolff, we’re thinking he’ll be back in the Octagon soon enough.

Now We’ve Seen it All Alert: BJ Penn and Jens Pulver Make Amends

While Chael Sonnen has been capturing much of the attention lately due to his mouth’s rather alarming ability to entertain and or enrage thousands at the same time, a certain P4P contender named Mr. BJ Penn, has also been known to do the same. While Chael Sonnen has been capturing much of the attention lately due to his mouth’s rather alarming ability to entertain and or enrage thousands at the same time, a certain P4P contender named Mr. BJ Penn, has also been known to do the same. As we’ve seen several times over the last few years, Penn’s never really been shy about sharing his ‘true feelings’ (dare we bring up the whole GSP thing?).

After losing to Jens Pulver way back in 2002, Penn never really ‘warmed up’ to the former champ, and during the fifth season of “The Ultimate Fighter” we all witnessed just how much Penn loathed his rival coach (you may recall that Penn cruised through Pulver in the 2007  rematch). Well, apparently time really does heal all wounds. In a video posted on the official BJ Penn site, here is some of what the Hawaiian had to say to Pulver, face to face:

“I’ve known this guy for a long time and over the years I’ve done some bad stuff to him. I’ve said bad things about him and as a man to another man I want to apologize for everything over the years. I know I’m going to need your help one day and as a man to a man that’s all in the past…”

Single tear? Pulver seemed pretty thrilled to be in the good books with BJ; maybe he’s picked up a few pointers for his War on the Mainland fight tomorrow. Jens will take on the 4-1 Diego Garijo, and as you probably know, the likeable Pulver needs a win really, really, really badly.

Randy Couture Talks New UFC Contract

Remember, way back in the day (three years is a long time for some), when all the talk was about if and when a recently ‘retired’ Randy Couture might square off with Fedor Emelianenko? Well, if you’ve been clinging to hope that someday, somehow, someway, that super fight might still take place, um, things aren’t […]

COUTURE

Remember, way back in the day (three years is a long time for some), when all the talk was about if and when a recently ‘retired’ Randy Couture might square off with Fedor Emelianenko? Well, if you’ve been clinging to hope that someday, somehow, someway, that super fight might still take place, um, things aren’t looking so good.

Earlier today we passed along the news that in a recent press conference, Fedor announced that he’s interested in signing a new multi-fight deal with Strikeforce, possibly for 4-6 fights. Yup, as we noted this AM, based off the frequency of Fedor’s fights, the Russian could be pushing 40 by the time that contract’s fulfilled. As far as Couture, well the legendary fighter’s upcoming UFC 118 bout with James Toney is apparently the second last bout on his current UFC deal, but as it’s looking like right now, Captain America isn’t looking to move. In a recent interview with MMA Weekly, Couture had this to say about his upcoming free agency:

“I’m sure the UFC, if things continue the way they’ve been continuing, will want to sign me to a new contract,” Couture said on Thursday. “That’s a long ways away as far as I can see. Right now, I’m not looking past James Toney, and be ready for that.”

No surprises there. Couture also added that his future bouts will likely take place at 205. So, really, it’s looking like the closest we’ll get to Fedor vs. Randy is by simulating it on EA Sports MMA. On the plus side, it’s just awesome Couture’s not even talking retirement; we could still see him throwing down two years from now.

Fedor Emelianenko Open to New 4-6 Fight Deal With Strikeforce

With the MMA world still ablaze about Anderson Silva’s recent come from behind victory over Chael Sonnen, Fedor Emelianenko’s earth shattering loss to Fabricio Werdum in June, kind of seems like a distant memory. With the MMA world still ablaze about Anderson Silva’s recent come from behind victory over Chael Sonnen, Fedor Emelianenko’s earth shattering loss to Fabricio Werdum in June, kind of seems like a distant memory. In fact, between Sonnen’s headline grabbing pre-fight trash talk and Silva barely getting past the challenger on Saturday, talk about just who and when in the hell Fedor will fight next had nearly dried up. That is until now….

The official M-1 Global site has posted a report today that includes several interesting comments from Fedor, and the organization’s Director of Operations, Evgeni Kogan. “The Last Emperor” attended a M-1 event in Atlantic City last weekend, and during a press conference tied to the card, he apparently was asked several questions about the future of his fight career. In regards to the always popular ‘what about the UFC?’ question, Emelianenko apparently was quick to shoot down any further Octagon talk, stating “for now we don’t have any interest in the UFC.”

Before you start thinking ‘well, all he said was “for now”’ and start pre-planning your first Brock vs. Fedor party, the Russian heavyweight also had this to say when asked about how many more fights he believes he has left.

“So far I feel very comfortable fighting, very good with my fighting, and I’m planning of fighting as long as I can physically. As far and I’m concerned we should discuss the possibility of signing another contract for 4-6 fights.”

Wow. 4 to 6 bouts with Strikeforce? With the frequency that Fedor fights that could take what? 4-5 years?…Kogan was also quoted saying that talks with Strikeforce are going “smoothly” and that they’re looking to extend Emelianenko’s contract.

Joe Riggs Unhappy with Recent Inactivity

Although most casual MMA fans probably won’t be ‘shifting a few things around’ to make sure they catch this Friday’s Strikeforce Challengers card, long time observers might be interested in seeing how UFC vet Joe Riggs fares against Louis Taylor in the main event. Although most casual MMA fans probably won’t be ‘shifting a few things around’ to make sure they catch this Friday’s Strikeforce Challengers card, long time observers might be interested in seeing how UFC vet Joe Riggs fares against Louis Taylor in the main event. Training partners of Riggs have consistently stated that the guy is a terrifying beast, and we’ve seen some of that like in his wins over Phil Baroni and Nick Diaz, but in other tilts he hasn’t exactly lived up to the hype (cue footage of loss to Diego Sanchez).

Riggs had been making some waves again, courtesy a 4 fight winning streak he was on, but in January he lost by UD to Xtreme Couture’s Jay Hieron. The fighter recently appeared on Sherdog’s “Beatdown” radio program, to discuss this Friday’s 182lb. catch-weight bout with Taylor, and it doesn’t sound like Riggs is too thrilled about going half a year plus without fighting.

“I’ve been training hard, but Strikeforce just didn’t give me a fight,” said Riggs. “I’ve been training, been on ‘Bully Beatdown’ on MTV and stuff like that, but I haven’t been able to fight. Strikeforce has been talking about this card in Phoenix for like five months and kept talking about it and I didn’t know it was going to be here for sure until like a month ago. I’ve been trying to fight, but they didn’t give me a fight.”

Dude wants to fight! Riggs also shared some of his less than kind thoughts on Strikeforce 135lb. women’s champion Sarah Kaufman; curious as to why? Head here.
