Anderson Silva Tells Critics to Lay Off Steven Seagal

Admit it, when you were  younger “Above the Law” was the sh-t; Steve Seagal was breaking arms, throwing dudes around like rag dolls, you may have been one of the thousands of kids to beg their parents for Aikido lessons as a result. Of course, for most, their love affair with Seagal soon waned, due in no small part to the dozens of straight-to-the 99 cent-bin quality films that the actor spawned. If you’re a regular MMA forum goer then you also know that you won’t often hear Seagal’s name mentioned in the same breath as say Helio Gracie, unless of course, the actor is somehow involved in the punch line.

Why all this talk about Seagal? Well if you weren’t too gooned while watching UFC 117, then you probably noticed that the actor accompanied Anderson Silva to the Octagon. A while back footage surfaced of Silva training with Seagal and “The Spider” seemed pretty damn impressed with some of the stuff the “Lawman” was busting out. Well, in a recent interview with Tatame, Silva had this to say to those people (you know who you are), who have been dissing Seagal after seeing him Saturday night.

“It’s a bad joke, he’s a great master and a great coach who was there with me, helped me all the time a lot. On the beginning of my trainings, we showed me some techniques which worked out and he deserves the respect of all of us. He’s a great master and a good person. I believe people have to respect him.”

Who are we to argue with the champ? Besides, we prefer our limbs unsnapped.

Verbal War Between Patrick Cote and Michael Bisping Continues

With much of the MMA internet world still consumed with discussion about last Saturday’s ‘now that sh-t was crazy’ fight between Anderson Silva and Chael Sonnen, you may have missed the war of words that’s heating up between Patrick Cote and Michael Bisping. With much of the MMA internet world still consumed with discussion about last Saturday’s ‘now that sh-t was crazy’ fight between Anderson Silva and Chael Sonnen, you may have missed the war of words that’s heating up between Patrick Cote and Michael Bisping. Apparently the growing drama all started recently when Cote stated in an interview with Fighters Only Magazine, that he wasn’t a “big fan” over Bisping and that further, he thinks the British fighter is “arrogant and over-rated.”

Naturally, when “The Count” was informed about the Canadian’s ‘assessment’ of him, he responded by saying that Cote was “two-faced” and that:

“Maybe all that horse meat has gone to his head. If he wants to try and make himself relevant again by trying to talk himself into a fight with me he can do, his time is his own.  Personally if I was him I would spend it in the gym learning how not to get dumped on my head.”

Realizing they’ve got something real nice cooking (interesting verb choice considering the above line), Fighters Only got back to Cote yesterday, and here is some of what the slugger had to say in response to Bisping.

“And by the way, I only gave an answer to a question from a journalist, I didn’t attack him out of nowhere. This is life you know, you can’t love everybody. But if he wants to be this way, with cheap shots like the ‘horse meat’ and ’dumped on the head’, lets do it, he’ll finish second I swear!”

Both guys have other bouts lined up for the fall  (Bisping with Yoshihiro Akiyama, Cote with Tom Lawlor) but hopefully Joe Silva’s keeping an eye on this.

Randy Couture Dismisses Report that James Toney Tapped Out “King Mo” Lawal

A couple of months ago a few thousand eyebrows were likely raised, when Strikeforce Light-Heavyweight Champion “King Mo” Lawal confirmed reports, which said soon to be mixed-martial-artist James Toney caught him with a submission during training. At the time it was reported that Toney had utilized a standing guillotine to tap Lawal, however, in a […]

A couple of months ago a few thousand eyebrows were likely raised, when Strikeforce Light-Heavyweight Champion “King Mo” Lawal confirmed reports, which said soon to be mixed-martial-artist James Toney caught him with a submission during training. At the time it was reported that Toney had utilized a standing guillotine to tap Lawal, however, in a more recent interview with Ariel Helwani, the boxing champ said it was a rear-naked-choke. Interesting how there’s a little bit of discrepancy there no?

Well, just a couple of weeks away from the highly anticipated bout between Randy Couture and Toney, it sounds like “The Natural” is calling BS on the boxer’s supposed new found submissions skills. Speaking to MMA Fighting recently, the legendary fighter said this, when asked for his thoughts on the widely (cleverly) circulated story that Toney subbed Lawal.

“Nah, I don’t believe that,” Couture chuckled. “He’s probably doing some wrestling with Mo Lawal. That wouldn’t surprise me. I know he’s not training with Dean Lister. Dean called me himself when that one broke and said, ‘I’m not training with that guy. Don’t believe that stuff.’ But it doesn’t matter. All the talk is just talk. No matter who he can get to say he’s tapped them out in training, on the day he’s still going to walk down to the cage and get in there with me and that’s when all that stuff stops.”

Who’s going to argue with Randy? To bet on that fight or any other scheduled for UFC 118 head here.

Gilbert Melendez Negotiating New Deal with Strikeforce

With the departure of Jake Shields to the UFC there’s no question that Strikeforce lost one of its top fighters, and a result, the promotion has one less guy that was in the ‘he could do some damage in the UFC’ mix. Although the Strikeforce roster isn’t littered with guys that are considered to be ‘cream […]

Josh Thomson vs Gilbert Melendez

With the departure of Jake Shields to the UFC there’s no question that Strikeforce lost one of its top fighters, and a result, the promotion has one less guy that was in the ‘he could do some damage in the UFC’ mix. Although the Strikeforce roster isn’t littered with guys that are considered to be ‘cream of the crop’ fighters, not only is the promotion’s lightweight champ Gilbert Melendez a top ten ranked dude, a lot of pundits have him in the top three. Looks like Cesar Gracie’s doing something right huh?

After cruising to a Unanimous Decision victory of Shinya Aoki in April, who’s definitely no slouch, Melendez announced that he probably wouldn’t fight again until the end of 2010 (he has a little one on the way). Well, in a recent interview with Heavy.com Melendez revealed that he’s currently in negotiations with Strikeforce, and if not for the fact that he’s the lightweight champion, “El Nino” would be a free agent..

“Technically I’m not a free agent; there is a championship clause in my contract, but I always knew if I won my four fights me and Scott, the president of Strikeforce, my boss, we’re on great terms and I know we’ll come to an agreement. I plan on being with Strikeforce for a long time if possible.”

So what you might be asking? Well, Shields was able to cruise to what everyone and their dog believes were greener pastures in the UFC, because he didn’t have a championship clause. Now while Melendez continues to say nice things about his current promotion you can’t help but wonder, if not for the championship clause, what are the chances he’d be joining his buddy Jake in the Octagon?

Alan Belcher’s Eye Injury Could Be Career Ending

Any regular reader here at Fix knows that generally speaking we act like jackasses on the site, belittling whatever or whomever is dominating MMA headlines, in a way that we hope is somewhat entertaining (no—you’re not the only one who’s saying ‘since when?’). Any regular reader here at Fix knows that generally speaking we act like jackasses on the site, belittling whatever or whomever is dominating MMA headlines, in a way that we hope is somewhat entertaining (no—you’re not the only one who’s saying ‘since when?’). Unfortunately there’s some news surfacing today that we certainly don’t want to make light of, as according to an interview Alan Belcher gave Purefight recently, the bruising middleweight’s fighting career could be on the ropes.

Now, you likely heard that Belcher was forced to withdraw from his scheduled September 15th bout with Demian Maia, due to a detached retina he incurred while training. If that wasn’t sh-tty enough, it sounds like Belcher is likely in need of further surgery, which could ultimately determine if he can continue to fight. Speaking to Purefight about his serious predicament Belcher said (thanks to MMA Fighting for the quote):

“Worst case is I don’t get any better than this and I’m only working with one eye and then I probably don’t want to risk fighting again with only one eye, cause if I lose that one, then I’m going to be blind,” Belcher said. “So it’s just — I’m not even really thinking about fighting right now. I’m just going to wait a couple months and see where I’m at. It’s disappointing cause I was on a roll and getting close to a title [shot].”

Belcher also added that at according to his doctors, “it’s not going to get better to the same, but at best, it’s going to be something like 20/40, 20/60 vision,” and that laser surgery will probably required “to get rid of the distortedness.” Damn; here’s hoping for a speedy and full recovery.

Soares Not 100% Set on Sonnen vs. Silva II

Okay, not long after speculating that the discussion about Saturday’s ‘where were you when?’ Anderson Silva vs. Chael Sonnen tilt could quite possibly stretch into September, here’s another report to throw in the mix. Okay, not long after speculating that the discussion about Saturday’s ‘where were you when?’ Anderson Silva vs. Chael Sonnen tilt could quite possibly stretch into September, here’s another report to throw in the mix. Immediately following the memorable fight we jumped right on the rematch bandwagon, and by the looks of the internet, that thing is picking up more ‘hop-ons’ by the second. So let’s do it up right?

Well in an interesting report today from MMA Fighting’s Ben Fowlkes, Silva’s manager Ed Soares doesn’t exactly sound like he’s 100% sold on doing Silva vs. Sonnen II right away. While appearing on the MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani, Soares was reportedly quoted saying:

“The way I look at it is, Chael fought his fight. And Chael had Anderson on his back for twenty-two minutes of that fight. …The way I feel is that Chael had Anderson in the position he wanted him, and if he wasn’t able to finish Anderson in twenty-two minutes in the position you said you wanted him in, then, hey man, you had your shot. No offense, not saying you can’t get another shot, but you know what I mean?”

Now Soares did concede that “part” of him thinks it would “”make a lot of sense” to do a rematch; yes, one would think so (cue cash register dinging). In terms of Chael failing to finish Silva, and thus he’s had his “shot,” yeah (as in Bill Lumbergh from Office Space style), don’t think that’s going to fly with most people.
