UFC on Fox 4 is finally in the books. The biggest question of the event was answered last when the UFC awarded a title shot to Lyoto Machida. He’ll face the winner of Dan Henderson and Jon Jones.

The night also saw the valiant return of Brandon Vera who showed everyone his potential when he took Mauricio “Shogun” Rua to the championship rounds.

It was an amazing night of fights and one that I regret not DVRing.

Anyway, take a look at the questions answered and lessons learned for UFC on Fox 4.

Dana White Explains Why Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua Didn’t Get the Title Shot

One of the biggest stories coming out of UFC on FOX 4 is that Lyoto Machida will receive the next shot at the winner of Jon Jones vs. Dan Henderson. The shot was dependent on an impressive win, and his knockout of Ryan Bader definitely met those criteria.

There were still some questions as to why Dana White and Joe Silva decided to award the shot to Machida instead of Rua, who picked up an equally impressive knockout over Brandon Vera in the main event.

After the post-fight press conference, White spoke with Bleacher Report and the MMA media to explain why the shot went to Machida.

“Leading up to this fight Shogun did turn down a fight. Shogun has not been terrorizing me for another shot at Jon Jones. And Lyoto Machida has. Lyoto Machida wants it,” White said. “He’s been all over me. He’s been aggressive about this thing. He went out and fought tonight and he fought a top 10 guy.”

White added, “if you go down the laundry list of reasons why he should have gotten it tonight and the fan poll thought so for Machida.”

This isn’t anything new for White who loves guys who want big fights over guys who continue to turn them down. Rua’s disinterest in facing Glover Teixeira definitely had a major impact on his placement in the company, and the fact that he didn’t absolutely smash Vera did as well.

I’d love to see Rua vs. Alex Gustafsson sometime in the future for the next shot after Machida.

UFC 152: Rory MacDonald Injured and out of B.J. Penn Fight

A huge bombshell was dropped tonight after the post-fight press conference in a discussion with Dana White. While speaking with the MMA media, White was asked about the proposed VADA (Voluntary Anti-Doping Association) testing in the B.J. Penn-Rory MacDonald fight.

The follow-up question was, if one of the fighters tests positive, would White pull them from the card? His response was the very definition of breaking news.

“We don’t have to worry about that anyway. It won’t happen. Rory’s out. He got cut open today, wide open. 38-48 stitches. No contact for a month. It’s off.”

White learned (as Mauricio “Shogun” Rua was walking out to the cage), that Rory MacDonald suffered a cut in training and had been forced out of the fight scheduled for September 22, 2012.

White’s delivery of his words really showed how shocked he was at receiving the news from Rory’s management.

White was also unsure if this meant that B.J. Penn would also be pulled from the event. It was a situation where there was no perfect response.

Fans are obviously disappointed that the fight was pulled from the card—losing B.J. Penn entirely would really set the UFC back.

To his credit, Rory MacDonald didn’t wish for the UFC to pull Penn from the event. He wants to see him face another opponent as one of the main draws of UFC 152

There is no word on when fans can expect to see Rory MacDonald again in the Octagon.

Dana White: ‘Maybe You Do Rashad vs Weidman and the Winner Gets a Title Shot’

UFC on FOX 4 is monumental for the UFC’s light heavyweight division, as all four men at the top of the card are all fighting for a title shot. All they have to do is go out and win impressively—no small task.

All four are also former Jon Jones victims, and this adds a whole different level of intrigue. However, one name that hasn’t been mentioned at all is Rashad Evans. Evans is coming off a decision loss that saw him become the first man to take Jon Jones the distance during his championship run.

With four fighters all vying for a shot at the belt, it seems like there just may not be any room for Evans at the top of the light heavyweight division anymore.

UFC President Dana White spoke with Bleacher Report and attending MMA media following the UFC on FOX 4 pre-fight press conference, and the topic of Evans’ future came up. White seemed as baffled as fans were, regarding Evans before going into promoter mode and creating a hypothetical fight on the spot.

“Rashad? I dunno. Personally I haven’t talked to Rashad. I’ve heard the talks of him wanting to go to 185 or possibly going to 185. I dunno. If he did, he’d have to fight somebody,” White told Bleacher Report. “Maybe you do Rashad vs. Weidman and the winner of that gets a shot. You know what I mean? That just came off the top of my head.”

As a fan of both Evans and Chris Weidman, I absolutely LOVE this idea. I think that both present interesting stylistic problems for the other and believe that both have the best shot at defeating Anderson Silva. Both have fantastic wrestling and the ability to take the fight wherever they want.

Rashad Evans vs. Chris Weidman? I say book it!
