Jake Ellenberger has been making waves in the UFC ever since he first stepped foot inside the Octagon.

In his first match, he was paired with former WEC champion Carlos Condit and dazzled with powerful right-hand punches, pushing the former champion to the brink and narrowly losing a split decision.

Ellenberger has been very vocal about wanting to have a fight with Jake Shields. Shields fought Georges St-Pierre in the main event of the recent UFC 129. That night, Jake lost his first fight in over six years, and the match-up featured a vicious first round knockout of Sean Pierson by none other than Jake Ellenberger. The win was the fourth in a row from Jake. He shattered his hand in the bout, but immediately had surgery and now looks to fight top competition in the UFC.

Now, Ellenberger wants to fight Jake Shields next.  He stated, “If they do make that match and me and Jake get to fight, he’s not a hard guy to figure out. I feel like I can beat him right now. There’s a lot of things in the past that I wasn’t doing correctly. It was kind of a learning process for me. This sport still being so new, earlier in my career I loved to compete and I was making a little bit of money, but I don’t think I was as focused and disciplined as I am now. I’ve surrounded myself with such good people. Good coaching and training partners, guys that really believe in me.”

This could be a good match-up, but is Shields interested?  We will have to wait and see at this point.

UFC News: After 10 Percent Vision, Georges St-Pierre Returns to Training

Georges “Rush” St-Pierre retained his UFC welterweight championship for the sixth consecutive time on April 30, defeating top ranked contender Jake Shields with relative ease.  What makes the feat all the more extraordinary is that St-Pierre did it with vision in just one eye.

Despite fighting nearly blind for most of the fight, the champion was able to keep Shields from taking him down the entire five round affair.

St-Pierre suffered from hyphema, a bleeding in the eye.  He was required to wear an eye patch and use medicated drops until it healed.  He has since improved and has been cleared to resume training.

One of St-Pierre’s trainers, Bruno Fernandes, is also an eye specialist.  He said that in severe cases of hyphema the person can suffer permanent damage to their vision.  Although Georges had only 10 percent of his vision at one point, his case was not severe and he has made a full recovery.

Fernandes stated that after the champ suffered the injury he still knew he could fight.  He stated, “By using instruments, if I had an idea how bad it was, if I knew there was no retina detachment, no open wound, and if it’s not 100 percent but he can see fingers, using the tools available at that moment it would be OK to let fight continue.”

Its good to know that St-Pierre will be able to fight again soon.  With a possible future bout with Nick Diaz looming on the horizon, the champion’s health becomes all the more important.

Strikeforce Overeem vs. Werdum: Daniel Cormier vs. Jeff Monson Added to Card

The link below provides proof that the Strikeforce event this coming June that takes place in Dallas will now feature four heavyweight bouts on the main card.  In addition to the two heavyweight grand prix bouts, now a pair of other bouts in the same division have been added to the Showtime broadcast.

Alistair Overeem’s older brother, Valentijn Overeem, will square off against hard hitting slugger Chad Griggs that night as well.  And Sho.com has just announced a fourth heavyweight clash has been added to the stacked fight card.

Former NCAA wrestling standout, Daniel Cormier, and former UFC title challenger, Jeff Monson, will clash in an intriguing matchup between an accomplished wrestler and an accomplished jiu jitsu master.

The addition of this interesting heavyweight clash to an already loaded night of fights raises the bar for Strikeforce.  Four heavyweight bouts on a main card is impressive in itself, but all four of these bouts feature talented and skilled performers who will put on one hell of a show.

The Cormier and Monson match-up could turn out to be a war with neither man wanting to take it to the ground. Will Cormier choose to wrestle a grappling nightmare like Jeff Monson?  Will Monson look to try and muscle Cormier into one of his trademark chokes?  We will have to wait and see.

Either way this card just got even better for the fans, Strikeforce and the sport. The link to the source article is below.

UFC 130: Quinton "Rampage" Jackson Vows To "Whoop Matt Hamill’s Ass"

Former UFC light heavyweight champion Quinton “Rampage” Jackson returns to the Octagon on May 28 where he meets Matt “The Hammer” Hamill in a light heavyweight slugfest.  The fight now takes on even more meaning.

A few short days ago, Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard each suffered an injury in training and were forced off the card.  The Jackson vs. Hamill matchup now has become the main event for UFC 130.

In a recent interview with ESPN.com, Rampage assured his fans that he will “whoop Matt Hamill’s ass” when they meet in the Octagon.

Rampage is coming off a lackluster fight in which he won a decision over Lyoto Machida. The last three fights he has participated in have gone to the judge’s scorecards for a decision. The fact of the matter is that Matt Hamill is not nearly as big of a name as Lyoto Machida or Rashad Evans, however Jackson said that he will take this fight seriously.

“If Matt Hamill thinks I’ll take him lightly, he’s mistaken this time,” Jackson said. “My coach won’t let me take my opponents lightly. I like to finish people. I want a devastating finish.”

He went on to say, “I’m a fighter in the true sense of the words Ultimate Fighter. I have the fighter’s spirit, and I’m not afraid to do anything. I’m not afraid to fight anybody.”

It is clear that if the fight remains standing, Jackson will be at a great advantage, but wrestling has been used to wear Rampage down before. He will have a constantly open to watch for a take down attempt so he can sprawl and get back to his boxing. Jackson remains confident that he will win the fight regardless of the course the fight takes.

“I’m gonna try to do to Matt Hamill what I try to do to all my opponents: Whoop his ass,” Jackson said. “There’s not one doubt in my mind that I can whoop Matt Hamill.”

UFC News: Strikeforce’s Scott Coker Has Been Demoted by Zuffa

The CEO of Strikeforce Scott Coker has made serious moves with the California-based organization. Since 2007, Strikeforce has grown into a top mixed martial arts organization, second only to Ultimate Fighting Championship. He has brought in such top mixed martial artists as Nick Diaz, Frank Shamrock, Alistair Overeem, Jake Shields, Dan Henderson and Fedor Emelianenko

CagePotato recently reported a huge change to the composition of the Strikeforce leadership. The 2011 Fighter Summit agenda included one leadership shuffle that was not widely discussed. It’s now revealed that Coker has been removed from his position as CEO of Strikeforce and is now Executive VP and General Manager. Now that Coker is not the CEO, is it possible Dana White will become President of Strikeforce as well? Reed Harris would be another popular choice to fill the role as the head of Strikeforce.

Whatever the end result, Strikeforce will now be ran with less influence and decision making from  Coker. His removal as CEO is shocking, however the UFC’s choice to not draw attention to the move is not. This move seems to be a far cry from the UFC’s stance that everything would be business as usual. More moves will surely be made over the coming years as the UFC and the sport of mixed martial arts continues to grow at a ever more rapid pace.

Former UFC welterweight contender Karo “The Heat” Parisyan is on the comeback once again.

Karo has suffered from personal struggles such as painkiller dependence and self-doubt.

He was one of the top 170 fighters in the world just a few short years ago, and is now trying to put the pieces of his career back together.

He fights in May for the first time since a UFC 123 loss to Dennis Hallman.

Parisyan seems ready to be in a better state of mind, and prepared to start winning fights using the judo throws that made him one of the best and most exciting fighters in the UFC.

Karo always brought the heat and constant pressure to the Octagon.

He had wars with fighters like Matt Serra, Diego Sanchez and Nick Diaz.

Hopefully, Parisyan is serious about getting himself back on track.

He was only 20 years old when he first entered the UFC, and he is now 29.  He still has plenty of gas left in his tank, and it is time for him to start his climb back to the top.

If he has truly put his personal demons to rest, then there is no doubt that he can be a force to reckoned with once again.  Only time will tell if he can stay on the right path, but his rededication to the gym and sport of mixed martial arts is a breath of fresh air for his fans.
