Bellator 140’s Paul Daley: Using the Past to Motivate Better His Future

In terms of excitement in MMA, especially when it comes to strikers, there are few who match the pure adrenaline rush and aesthetically pleasing style of Britain’s Paul Daley.

Daley, who now competes for Bellator, is one of their top welterweights on the roster. The brash Brit has had just one fights since returning, but he already finds himself in a high-profile spot with the company.

In fact, Bellator is so invested in Daley, they already have him scheduled multiple times. Not only will he be fighting this weekend at Bellator 140 in an MMA bout, but they already are banking on him performing in a kickboxing match for the Bellator-Glory co-promoted event.

For Daley, taking a kickboxing match is nothing new. The Brit has been taking kickboxing bouts for a long time and has even been taking them between MMA fights during his time post-UFC and pre-Bellator.

“I’ve spent a long time training kickboxing, so nothing has really changed in my training,” Daley explained in an exclusive interview with Bleacher Report. “I would love to do both, but my contract isn’t structured in a way that allows me to split time. If an opportunity arose for me to fight for a Glory title, I would love to take that chance as well.”

Daley’s return to Bellator saw him fight Andre Santos, a respected Brazilian mixed martial artist. That said, many fans viewed it as a “gimme” bout for Daley, setting him up for a showdown with champion Douglas Lima in the aftermath.

What ensued was an interesting bout. Daley was unable to finish Santos, though he did win the bout. Daley, however, was not impressed by his own performance, explaining in his post-fight interview that he did not want a title fight for his next bout.

Fans were surprised at his response to a win, expecting that he’d be the next man for Lima. Daley points out, in retrospect, his reasoning for all of that.

“I was really disappointed with my performance in my last fight, to be honest,” Daley confessed. “I take pride in my fights and finishing, so not finishing felt like I lost. Looking back, it wasn’t as terrible as I thought it was. It was actually quite exciting and the fans were entertained, so what I really did was look at that fight to look for technical mistakes.”

Moving forward, Daley takes a fight this weekend at Bellator 140 in Connecticut against east coast MMA veteran Dennis Olson. It’s another set-up fight for Daley, who many believe is still making a beeline toward a title shot.

While Daley is a knockout artist, Olson is a grappler who has won most of his fights via submission. It’s your classic striker-versus-grappler matchup, so Daley plans to stay off the mat against Olson in an attempt to wreck him with his powerful punches and kicks.

“This is a tough fight, he’s gonna come out and try to wrestle me,” Daley pointed out. “He’s gonna fight better than he’s ever fought because this is a huge opportunity for him. People will be entertained by this fight, no doubt.”

If you’re not new to the scene, you know Daley’s personality. He is very entertaining on the microphone and not afraid to make call-outs.

Many times, using your mouth can get you better opportunities. Just look at Chael Sonnen, Conor McGregor and Bethe Correia.

For Daley, a win this weekend doesn’t necessarily mean he will use verbal bullets to get a shot at the title.

“I am sure Douglas Lima will call me out if he wins, but I won’t be calling him out. I’m in a position where everybody is coming after me anyways, so there are a ton of fights available for me.”

In Daley’s eyes, though, the biggest fight for him moving forward isn’t a title fight. In fact, the biggest fight he can earn at this point is against a former adversary.

That adversary is Josh Koscheck.

The two met at UFC 113 in an infamous bout that remains a black mark on Daley’s career.

The bout, which was during Koscheck’s rapid ascension toward the UFC title picture, saw the American stifle Daley for three rounds using wrestling. When the final bell rang, Koscheck walked away, but he was socked by a frustrated Daley.

It got Daley cut by the UFC, and he’s never been back. It was an embarrassing moment for Daley, but something that can lead to a big-money bout in Bellator now, especially since there is still heat between the two.

“The fight with Josh Koscheck will happen, it’s up when Spike TV and Bellator want it to happen. I’m ready whenever. We can fight next week, it doesn’t matter to me.”

“I think I will end 2015 with either the Koscheck fight or a title fight. If it’s the Koscheck fight, I will end the year a hero because I will rid the MMA world of an annoying punk. I’m surprised he didn’t retire after his UFC run, but I will retire him. He sees Bellator as a retirement plan to store away some extra dollars, but I will rip his head off in the cage.”

Daley seems to have things planned out for the rest of the year and moving forward. He always has one eye on his current task and one eye on the future.

That’s why you should expect even bigger things to come from the man they call “Semtex.”

The UFC is ready to make its premiere in Scotland, as UFC Fight Night 72 settles down in Glasgow. Headlined by Michael Bisping and Thales Leites, it should be a fun event with lots of talent and great matchups.

There is a ton of European talent from the area participating on this card. What’s even better is that Scotland is well represented on this offering, as fighters like Joanne Calderwood, Stevie Ray and Robert Whiteford fly Scotland’s flag in the Octagon.

The UFC’s foray into San Diego was brilliantly successful for this writer, as all six fights were predicted correctly. Let’s see if we can continue this momentum here, as we are a little bit over the halfway mark of 2015.

Without further ado, here are the prelim picks for UFC Fight Night 72 in Scotland.

3 Fights for Holly Holm to Take Next After UFC Fight Night 71

The UFC touched down in San Diego Wednesday night, as UFC Fight Night 71 came to audiences live from Fox Sports 1. Headlined by heavyweight standouts Frank Mir and Todd Duffee, the card was deep with prospects, as well as established UFC veterans.

On that card, WMMA star Holly Holm made her second appearance in the UFC when she took on rising star Marion Reneau. It was a bout that was billed high on the card and was considered a pivotal bout in the women’s bantamweight division.

Although it wasn’t the best fight or most competitive, Holm was able to secure a unanimous decision. She used a high volume of strikes, especially kicks, to overwhelm and eventually beat Reneau.

Holm‘s win pushes her up the ladder and opens up a lot of options for opponents. So, here are three women we could see Holm go up against going forward.

Germaine de Randamie

This has been a matchup I have called for since Holly Holm signed with the UFC. Nothing has changed, as I still want this fight to happen.

Holm is a world-champion boxer. De Randamie is a world champion muay thai kickboxer.

Two elite strikers going up against one another? Count me in.

If these two engaged and entertained a high-volume striking affair, this could be a Fight of the Night contender.

Jessica Andrade

Holm was victorious on the San Diego card Wednesday night. Jessica Andrade was also a winner on Wednesday’s card.

Just based on timing, these two could easily be matched up.

Although Andrade would be outsized by Holm in a potential showdown, that is nothing different than she’s used to. Just look at her Wednesday night fight against Sarah Moras, who she was way smaller than, to get a glimpse of how she can handle larger opponents.

The great thing about Andrade as a potential matchup for Holm? She will stand and bang with Holm, which is the American’s strength, but she will also look for an opportunity to fight on the mat.

That’s the question mark we still have on Holm, the ground.

Therefore, this match could be potentially made, especially seeing as Holm still has some work to do before title talk is made.

Liz Carmouche

If the UFC really wants to test Holm, they will throw her in the meat grinder with former title challenger and grinding wrestler Liz Carmouche.

Carmouche, known for her workmanlike style and completely opposite fighting style of Holm, would be a gigantic challenge for “he Preacher’s Daughter.

Yes, Holm still has some development to do. However, how can she get better if she doesn’t challenge herself?

That’s why Carmouche could play a great role in testing out Holm.

Holly Holm vs. Marion Reneau: What We Learned from UFC Fight Night 71 Tilt

Wednesday night, the UFC held a rare weekday show from San Diego on Fox Sports 1. A show headlined by former heavyweight champ Frank Mir and Todd Duffee also featured women’s MMA star Holly Holm in her second appearance in the UFC, taking on rising star Marion Reneau. The bout was billed high on the Fight Night 71 card and was considered a pivotal fight in the women’s bantamweight division.

MMA writer Rob Tatum said this about Holm:

Although it wasn’t the best fight or the most competitive, Holm was able to secure a unanimous-decision win. She used a high volume of strikes, especially kicks, to overwhelm and eventually beat Reneau.

What did we learn from this bout? Let’s take a look right now in examining the Holm-Reneau bout.

What We’ll Remember from the Fight

In this fight, there was a distinct difference in Holm compared to her UFC debut.

In her first bout with the UFC in February 2015, Holm looked extremely nervous. She was shaking while walking to the cage and when she was standing there waiting for the fight to begin.

She fought like somebody who had never seen the bright lights before, to sum it up.

However, in this bout, she looked far more comfortable. She was not tentative, she was not visibly shaken and she showed shades of the scary fighter we watched growing up in the MMA regional scene.

That’s what we’ll remember, especially compared to her bout previous to this one, for sure.

What We Learned from Holm

She still has some work to do.

Holm even admitted in her post-fight interview with commentator Jon Anik that she still has work to put in. That’s an honest assessment of herself, though it’s not a wild assertion considering most people were probably thinking it.

For a world champion boxer, she certainly throws a lot of kicks as well. That has led to victories, even though she may want to gauge distance a tad better when she throws them at that high a volume.

What We Learned from Reneau

She was not the fighter we saw in her first two UFC bouts.

Reneau was extremely impressive in her first two outings with the company. She dominated Alexis Dufresne and finished Jessica Andrade in fun fashion earlier in 2015.

What she did against Holm erased the memory of those fights.

She held a distinct advantage on the ground with Holm, yet she was content to stand with her and didn’t shoot in. She occasionally pulled guard, but that amounted to nothing.

Not a clever fight for the gym teacher from California.

What’s Next for Holm?

I still love the idea of a bout with Germaine de Randamie for Holly Holm.

Holm is a world champion boxer. As for de Randamie, she is a world champion muay thai kickboxer.

That would make for a potentially fun fight, no?

What’s Next for Reneau?

Reneau needs to go back to the drawing board and find what made her successful in previous bouts.

A bout against Leslie Smith could be a fun, barn-burner of a fight. Both are well-rounded, tough as nails and bring an exciting style.

The other option that looks entertaining could be against another loser on the San Diego card in Sarah Moras. Moras is the wrestler to Reneau’s grappler, which could make for a fun mat war.

Lost in the shuffle of the massive influx of UFC events in the last week is Bellator 140, which goes down Friday on Spike TV. Headlined by a welterweight bout between Douglas Lima and Andrey Koreshkov, the card is filled with what the wrestling community would call “squash” matches.

Stars like Paul Daley, Michael Page and Brennan Ward are all gracing this card. That said, they are taking on heavy underdogs, which makes this a showcase event for those stars to win.

With that, let’s examine the card and make some picks.

Don’t get too comfortable yet if you were planning on taking a break from the busy International Fight Week. Wednesday is yet another UFC event, this time hailing live from San Diego.

UFC Fight Night 71, which is headlined by heavyweights Frank Mir and Todd Duffee, looks to be a fun little event featuring a lot of up-and-comers and prospects, including names such as Tony Ferguson, Holly Holm and Alan Jouban.

However, before we see those main card stars, we have the prelims. International Fight Week has not been the nicest to my prelim record this year, so I’ll look to right the ship going forward.

Without further ado, here are the preliminary card picks for Wednesday’s fights.
