Conor McGregor claims to have overtaken Real Madrid and Portugal superstar Cristiano Ronaldo as the highest-paid athlete in the world following his 2017 boxing bout with Floyd Mayweather Jr.
The Notorious recently announced a new sponsorship with Burger King, which he has suggested will take him past Ronaldo as the best-paid sportsperson in the world, via his official Instagram account:
The Mirror‘s Martin Domin reported in November that McGregor raked in £75 million for his 10th-round defeat to Mayweather last August, with speculation of a potential mixed martial arts meeting between the two.
The Dubliner hasn’t fought in the Octagon since beating Eddie Alvarez to become the UFC lightweight champion in November 2016.
McGregor may be a popular figure as far as his endorsement deals go, but UFC president Dana White told Lance Pugmire of the Los Angeles Times the former two-weight champion will be stripped of his lightweight crown at UFC 223 on April 7.
That’s when interim lightweight champion Tony Ferguson will face off against top contender Khabib Nurmagomedov, as White said: “That’s exactly right: As soon as one punch is thrown, it’s on for the full title and it’s only fair. They’ve both worked their way up to No. 1 and No. 2. They deserve a shot.”
McGregor also posted a video of his opening advertisement on behalf of Burger King to his Instagram:
Per Domin’s report, McGregor said he earns £500,000 per month when he’s out of competition, equivalent to £6 million a year. Ronaldo earns around £365,000 per week at Real, per Goal’s Oli Platt, meaning it would take him roughly four-and-a-half months to match that figure.
The Notorious spoke to Yahoo Sport in November and broke down his previous appearance on Forbes‘ highest-paid athletes list and his aspirations to eclipse Ronaldo’s status as No. 1:
While MMA is growing every year as a mainstream sport, Ronaldo is one of the best players in football, the most popular sport in the world.
Endorsements such as his new Burger King partnership will help McGregor close the gap on the Portuguese star, but even McGregor’s earnings from his Mayweather duel may struggle to pull him level with Real’s richest.

UFC flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson reportedly underwent successful shoulder surgery on Wednesday after complaining he was experiencing pain near the end of 2017.
The 125-pound champion holds the record for successive UFC title defences with 11 to his name, but there’s no timeline as to when he’ll attempt to record a 12th following this setback, per Ariel Helwani of MMAFighting.com.
UFC reporter Mike Dyce posted a video of Johnson explaining his reasons to have surprise surgery on Wednesday:
Johnson’s last fight saw him win Submission of the Year honours for his devastating flying armbar on Ray Borg at UFC 216, and speculation of a bout opposite bantamweight champion T.J. Dillashaw continues to swirl.
That being said, the 27-2-1 fighter recently teased the prospect of following in Conor McGregor’s footsteps and stepping up in weight and out of the Octagon to take on Floyd Mayweather Jr. in a boxing match:
John Morgan and Ken Hathawayof MMA Junkie reported Dillashaw as saying he’ll “happily” cut the necessary 10 pounds to meet Johnson in his own division, although he may now need to find another target.
Dillashaw’s coach and former UFC fighter Duane Ludwig recently spoke to MMA Junkie about the prospective champion-versus-champion meeting and why he’s such an advocate to make it happen:
Johnson was an active fighter early on in his UFC career and numbered three fights per year between 2011—the year he made his UFC debut—and 2013. However, that figure has been reduced to two fights per year since 2014.
“Mighty Mouse” has managed to stave off major injuries for the majority of his career, allowing him to cultivate the most dominant championship streak in the promotion’s history.
It seems the 31-year-old’s fatigue has caught up with him for now and is likely to keep him out of action for some time while he heals from surgery.

Holly Holm has the chance to become a two-weight champion at UFC 219 in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Saturday, although she must end the 12-year unbeaten streak of women’s featherweight title-holder Cris Cyborg in order to do so.
It was in Nevada that Holm, 36, lost the women’s bantamweight strap to Miesha Tate at UFC 196, but she’s hoping for better fortune this Saturday in what will be her first bout back in the Silver State since that submission loss.
A brawl between two strikers is expected this time around. Cyborg is three wins into her UFC career and enters this fight having beaten her last 12 opponents (including a 2011 Strikeforce win over HirokoYamanaka, later ruled a no contest for a positive steroid test, per MMA Mania’s Geno Mrosko).
Justin Hartling of OddsShark recently had Cyborg, 32, as the clear -360 (bet $360 to win $100) favourite for Saturday’s duel, while Holm (+270) could struggle to find the same space she’s enjoyed against previous opponents:
Theweigh-in will take place on Friday at the T-Mobile Arena at 7 p.m. ET (12 a.m. GMT, Sat. Dec. 30), and we provide all the hype leading up to that event, complete with a fight prediction and preview.
Tickets for UFC 219 can be purchased via StubHub.com.
Holly Holm Upsets For Another Title Win
Rarely has a women’s UFC matchup held such devastating potential for on-the-feet entertainment, as neither woman has shown much preference for groundwork previously.
As such, it was little surprise to hear UFC pundit Kenny Florian point to the counterstrike being of particular importance, while former UFC middleweight champ Michael Bisping noted Holm‘s need for space in order to win:
The main issue for “The Preacher’s Daughter” is that Cyborg isn’t likely to grant such comforts. Her pace is relentless, evidenced by the fact four of her last six wins came via first-round knockout or TKO.
Her current game plan remains largely the same:
Prior to her days as a mixed martial artist and gaining fame as the first woman to defeat Ronda Rousey, Holm was a boxer, earning world titles in multiple federations.
Her class as a kickboxer could also be important in establishing a border between her and Cyborg—if she’s able to do so.
Cyborg’s boxing coach, Jason Parillo, recently told MMAJunkie (h/t Women’s MMA Rankings) that he expects his charge to “go in there and dominate,” whether that be on the feet or by utilising her brown belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu.
If Holm can keep the fight upright, she stands arguably the best chance of defeating the current featherweight champ of any Cyborg opponent to date, as she boasts the weapons in her arsenal to end this fight in an instant.
