UFC 131 will take place on Saturday, June 11 from Rogers Arena in Vancouver, BC. The main event on the card will be a heavyweight battle between two highly ranked strikers, Junior dos Santos and Shane Carwin.

As the intro to the video says, “The countdown to UFC 131 starts now.”

The video starts out with a pretty astounding fact, Dos Santos and Carwin have a combined 26 MMA fights, with only three of them going past the first round. In other words, don’t expect these fighters to resort to the dreaded “lay and pray” technique.

Both fighters are confident going into the fight with Dos Santos saying, “If the fight’s done in the first round, it will be my victory.”

Carwin, of course, sees things differently, “I like Junior dos Santos, I respect Junior dos Santos, but I’m going to knock him out.”

The countdown video also takes a look at the fight between Kenny Florian and Diego Nunes as well as the bout between Demian Maia and Mark Munoz.

Bleacher Report’s Vince Carey:

While most of the hype around UFC 131 is centered on the main event between Junior Dos Santos and Shane Carwin, there is another fighter who is likely a win away from a title shot this Sunday.

Kenny Florian is making his featherweight debut against Diego Nunes this weekend, and due to fortunate circumstances and marketability alone, he’ll likely get a title shot with a win.

But does he deserve it?

Florian has already gotten two shots at UFC gold and came up short both times, getting dominated by Sean Sherk and looking sluggish before being submitted by BJ Penn back at UFC 101.

Florian worked his way back into the title picture by August of last year, but was controlled by Gray Maynard at UFC 118, losing a shot at the title in front of his hometown crowd.

After the loss to Maynard, Florian decided to make the cut to 145.

The UFC returns to Vancouver, British Columbia on Saturday, June 11 for UFC 131. Headlining the fight card will be a heavyweight battle between two of the most feared strikers in all of MMA, Junior dos Santos and Shane Carwin.

The original main event on the card featured the coaches from Season 13 of The Ultimate Fighter, Brock Lesnar and Dos Santos; however, Lesnar was forced off the card due to his second bout with diverticulitis. Carwin, who was already booked on the card, was quickly moved into Lesnar’s place.

Fans are expecting an all-out striking war between these two fighters as neither has shown any interest in taking any of their previous fights to the ground.

It is widely believed that the winner of the Dos Santos (12-1) versus Carwin (12-1) bout will  move on to face UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez.

Also facing off at UFC 131 will be Kenny Florian and Diego Nunes. Florian (14-5) is hoping a win over the (16-1) Nunes will put him in the mix for a shot at UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo, while Nunes looks to play the role of the spoiler.

This bout will mark Florian’s first fight in the featherweight division after previously competing at middleweight, welterweight and lightweight for the UFC.

Also appearing on the main card, which will be shown on pay-per-view, beginning at 9 pm ET:

Jon Olav Einemo vs. Dave Herman

Demian Maia vs.  Mark Muñoz

Donald Cerrone vs. Vagner Rocha

Spike TV will air two preliminary card bouts beginning at 8 pm ET. The other three preliminary bouts will be streamed live on the UFC’s facebook page beginning at 5:50 pm ET.

Bleacher Report’s Ed Kapp:

After dropping two straight bouts, Joey Beltran, a self-proclaimed realist, realizes that his upcoming match at UFC 131 has major implications on the future of his career in the UFC.

Despite losing his first professional match in February 2007, Beltran would go on to win 10 out of his next 12 fights—including a win over Houston Alexander in early 2010 — en route to being invited to compete at UFC 109 against Rolles Gracie.

After finishing Gracie in the second round of their match, Beltran notched a unanimous decision victory win over Tim Hague at UFC 113 in Montreal.

In his third contest in the UFC, Beltran took to the Octagon to take on Matt Mitrione. In a match that was awarded Fight of the Night honors, Beltran, after three rounds of action, would go on to fall short against Mitrione—dropping a unanimous-decision loss to the man they call “Meathead.”

Bleacher Report’s Mike Hodges:

Despite the increasing amount of momentum built up, it appears the state of New York still refuses to sanction mixed martial arts.

The NYDailyNews.com reports that Assembly speaker Sheldon Silver announced that the UFC would not make its way into New York due to the lack of support behind the promotion.

“There does not appear to be widespread support in the Assembly for this legislation,” Silver said.

The recent announcement puts a damper onto the plans of potentially hosting an event, and does anything but create more exposure for the sport. The legislation bill recently passed the Assembly Tourism Committee, as well as the Senate, and it is expected to be go through the Assembly Codes Committee next week.

Regardless of Silver’s decision, there is still a growing support for MMA to be sanctioned by chamber members.

“Every other state seems to think this is a good idea,” Codes Committee Chairman Joseph Lentol said.
