News broke on Friday afternoon that contracts had been signed for a Nick Diaz versus Jeff Lacy boxing match.

ESPN.com reported that Lacy, the former IBF super middleweight champion, has specifically signed on to fight Diaz, the current Strikeforce welterweight champion.  Diaz’s manager, Cesar Gracie, stated that Diaz’s deal was “tentative.”

Following the official press conference for UFC 129, UFC president Dana White spoke more informally to a smaller group of MMA press.

When asked about Diaz’s contract and the stipulation for a boxing match in 2011, White said, “Listen, for the last 10 years, I’ve dealt with the craziest, coolest, the baddest, the this, the that, and I’ve always tried to make everybody happy. You can’t make them all happy, but you can try, and I’m going to sit down with Nick Diaz, literally after this fight, and try to figure out what’s next for him. It’s in his deal that he can do it (box), absolutely.”

The main event of UFC 129 saw welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre defeat Diaz’s teammate, Jake Shields, by unanimous decision.

Following the fight, Diaz stated in interviews that he wanted to meet St-Pierre inside the Octagon.

For his part, White eluded to the fact that he could make a St-Pierre versus Diaz fight happen if he wanted to, “I imagine I could do whatever I wanted to do if I really wanted to, but we have a contract with Showtime and he’s a Showtime fighter,” White told MMAWeekly. “I don’t know we’re going to have to see how this whole thing works out. That’s an interesting fight (GSP vs. Diaz).”

Gracie reported to ESPN that the talk that White had mentioned having with Diaz had yet to take place.

If the conversation between Diaz and White had not occurred before the signing of the Lacy contract, why the rush? It makes little sense for Diaz’s camp to not even wait to hear what White had to say.

When the president of the promotion says, “I imagine I can do whatever I wanted to do,” in regard to making a fight that just months ago seemed impossible, it seems reasonable to give the guy a chance to speak to you.

If the tactic was done with the thought of applying pressure on White and the UFC into making the St-Pierre fight happen, well, that’s a very risky proposition.

MMA fans would like to see Diaz and St-Pierre fight and the fight is probably the most sensible fight to make from a business standpoint, but the fact remains that the UFC and White do not need a Diaz versus St-Pierre fight.

The promotion will go on without ever presenting that fight, but will Diaz be able to go on without the UFC and Zuffa LLC, the owner of both the UFC and Strikeforce?

If the plan is to force White’s hand it may backfire. No matter how much White likes Diaz he surely knows that the UFC does not need him or the headaches he could possibly bring them. It is very likely that White calls Diaz’s bluff and says, “Good luck with your fight and better luck when your contract with Strikeforce runs out and it is not renewed.”

If Diaz thinks he is the most underpaid fighter in MMA now, one wonders what he would think if he was forced to fight outside of the Strikeforce or UFC promotions.

With that being said, ESPN did report Gracie saying, “Nick’s [MMA] contract takes precedence. That’s why we’re not out there telling everyone what we’re going to do. We’re trying to work together with the UFC and not against them. And we’re trying to do things the right way.”

It remains to be seen if signing the boxing contract before hearing anything from White constitutes doing “things the right way.”

This situation, between two of the more interesting personalities in sports bears watching.

Two of the brightest prospects in Strikeforce’s heavyweight division, Shane Del Rosario (11-0) and Daniel Cormier (7-0) were set to meet on the Strikeforce Grand Prix Heavyweight Tournament: Overeem vs. Werdum card; however that fight is off after Del Rosario was involved in a car accident.

According to MMAJunkie.com, the accident occurred on April 14. According to their report, Del Rosario was at a complete stop at a traffic light when he was hit by another driver. The accident totaled Del Rosario’s car.

Del Rosario’s trainer Colin Oyama said he feared that the injuries that Del Rosario sustained are bad enough to keep him from ever fighting again.

“He’s planning on [fighting], but the injuries are serious enough to where it’s kind of in question whether he can or not. We’re hoping that he can. We’ll know more in six months.”

If and when Del Rosario can train he will have the distraction of a possible lawsuit against the other driver.

“Obviously, he’s contacted an attorney, and he’s gone to some of the best specialists around, so we’ll see,” said Oyama. “Zuffa and Strikeforce have definitely helped with that.”

At this time, Strikeforce has not announced if they will seek a new opponent for Cormier for the June 18 card, which will take place at American Airlines Arena in Dallas, Texas.

Ken Shamrock Says Everyone Except the UFC Wants Shamrock vs. Royce Gracie III

Add Ken Shamrock to the list of those who would like to see Royce Gracie fight at UFC 134 in Rio.

The rub is that Shamrock feels he would be the ideal opponent to face off against the Brazilian MMA legend.

“That fight, Royce Gracie (versus) Ken Shamrock, should happen,” Shamrock recently told Fight Network. “The fans want it, I want it, Royce wants it, Brazil wants it.”

Shamrock then went on, ripping the promotion that could make the fight happen, saying “the only problem with that is you have a bunch of people who have big egos who believe that the UFC created this whole thing when they absolutely did not. People like myself and Royce Gracie and (Mark) Coleman and many, many other people created this UFC phenomenon, so that they can sit there and control it which is what they’re doing today, trying to control it for themselves. So they’re not gonna let that fight happen.”

If the two UFC Hall of Famers were to meet, Shamrock thinks their presence on the UFC 134 fight card would result in big pay-per-view numbers for the promotion.

“There’s no doubt in my mind, and anyone else will tell you, that if this fight was to happen, this would be the biggest pay-per-view to date, but they will not let that happen,” Shamrock said. “(The UFC) would have to swallow their egos for that to happen, and these guys have too big of egos to let that happen.”

Shamrock’s vitriol most likely stems from the loss of a lawsuit he filed against the UFC’s parent company, Zuffa, LLC. In the suit, Shamrock alleged that the promotion had violated the terms of his contract when they released him with one fight remaining on that contract. The judge in the case found in favor of Zuffa, however, and Shamrock was subsequently ordered to pay Zuffa’s attorney fees and other costs, totaling $175,000.

Shamrock and Gracie have battled twice before, with Gracie winning their first fight at UFC 1 via rear-naked choke submission. The second time they met, in a “superfight” at UFC 5, the fight was declared a draw after 36 minutes of action.

UFC 134 will take place August 27 at the HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The fight card will be headlined by a middleweight title bout between champion Anderson Silva and the last man to gain a victory over him, Yushin Okami.

Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard will meet at UFC 131 on May 28. The fight will mark the third time that these two competitors have met. It will be the second time they will do battle for Edgar’s UFC lightweight title.

The first time the two fought, in 2008, Maynard (10-0-1-1) handed Edgar (13-1-1) his first and still only loss of his career, taking the fight by unanimous decision. The two had a rematch on January 1, 2011 to fight for the title that Edgar captured from BJ Penn. The rematch ended with a majority draw and Edgar retained his title.

In the first round of the rematch, Maynard dropped Edgar, “I’m thinking this is done, I’ve reached my goal,” Maynard said. However, he could not finish the champion. The final score cards read 48-46, 46-48, 47-47 for the draw.

One thing will be certain going into the title-fight rematch: These two will not be looking to let this fight go to the judges’ scorecards.

Bleacher Report’s Mike Hodges:

The recent bad blood between rivals Urijah Faber and UFC bantamweight champion, Dominick Cruz has certainly been well-documented.

Both competitors will headline UFC 132, when they meet in a rematch from WEC 26, to determine the newly crowned bantamweight champion.

While appearing as a guest on MMA Fight Corner Radio, Faber did not hold anything back when discussing his opponent. In fact, the former WEC featherweight champion used as little dialogue as possible

“Immature,” Faber said when asked on describing his opponent.

The last time both men competed, Faber picked up the victory, submitting Cruz via guillotine choke.

Since failing to recapture his featherweight title against Mike Thomas Brown and current title holder Jose Aldo, Faber recently moved down to bantamweight and made his debut at UFC 128.

UFC 130: Stefan Struve Says He’s "Improved a Lot Since My Last Fight"

Bleacher Report’s Ed Kapp:

In a little more than two years since making his UFC debut, Stefan Struve has steadily risen through the ranks of the organization’s heaviest division. Although Struve insists that he isn’t feeling the pressure, the fact of the matter is “The Skyscraper” is on the brink of becoming a bonafide contender in the UFC’s heavyweight division.

An established star on the European mixed martial arts circuit, before making his UFC debut in February of 2009, Struve has since claimed five wins in seven Octagon appearances—including victories over Paul Buentello, Christian Morecraft and, most recently, Sean McCorkle.

Right now, Struve is preparing for his next bout—a heavyweight tilt on May 28th against Travis Browne at UFC 130.

I recently had the opportunity to speak with Stefan Struve about, among other topics, the joys of home-ownership, what he’s been able to accomplish in the UFC so far and his upcoming bout against Browne later this month.
