Anderson Silva has come to one conclusion about potential superfights with Jon Jones and Georges St-Pierre: It’s all “bulls—t.”
The former UFC Middleweight Champion already has his hands full in a scheduled rematch with Chris Weidman in December, but he is constantly being heckled by talks of superfight bouts against fellow pound-for-pound greats Jones and St-Pierre.
During an interview with GiveMeSport, via Fightersonlymag.com, Silva put the lid on all of the superfight talk:
“My opinion – the people always say ‘superfight, superfight’ but where are the chances for the new guys to come? Yeah it’s good for business but is no good for the other’s guy fight. I go to fight Georges St Pierre, he cuts up, I cut down. I finish the fight. I go to fight Jon Jones, I finish the fight. Who’s next? No have! My opinion, this is perfect bulls—t.
I’m ready for fight for Jon Jones, Georges St. Pierre but in my academy, Minotauro, Glover and the other fighters in this class for Jon Jones. Georges St. Pierre is a different class. I have my problems in my class.”
The biggest problem Silva currently faces at middleweight is Chris Weidman, the man who knocked him out and claimed the UFC title in July. A rematch between the two middleweight stars is scheduled for UFC 168.
Silva appears determined to not let any distractions get in the way of his journey towards recapturing the UFC title and regaining his status as the top pound-for-pound fighter in the world.
Besides, Silva makes several valid points regarding the superfights.
St-Pierre hasn’t appeared the least bit interested in moving up in weight, given the significant size disparity. If Silva moved down and defeated St-Pierre, there would be no other incentive to actually stay at welterweight and defend the title.
As for Jones, Silva already stated several times that he wasn’t interested in making a permanent move to light heavyweight. During a media luncheon for UFC 162, according to MMAFighting.com, Silva even went as far as admitting he didn’t feel like he would beat Jones in a fight.
Even if he managed to pull off the upset, he would only serve as an unnecessary roadblock for teammates Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, Glover Teixeira and Rafael “Feijao” Cavalcante.
Let the fans continue daydreaming and debating amongst themselves about potential superfights that will likely never come to fruition.
Silva has a middleweight title to win back.
