He may no longer be the UFC featherweight champion, but if recent developments turn into something, Conor McGregor may not even be fighting the Octagon for his next bout.

The megastar is reportedly out until May while he awaits the birth of his first child with girlfriend Dee Devlin, and when he does return, it may be inside the boxing ring. ‘The Notorious” management team confirmed to MMA Fighting that he had been issued a boxing license in California today.

The news was soon confirmed with CSAC Director Andy Foster, who stated theĀ opinion that the commission is happy to license McGregor. The Irish knockout artist has long been rumored for a monstrous boxing bout against legendary champ Floyd Mayweather Jr., so Foster believes is a highly skilled boxer in need of a comparable opponent:

“He got a license today and a federal ID. He’s a California boxer now.”

“He’s qualified [as a boxer],” Foster said. “I’d love to see him fight in California. It just needs to be the right opponent. Certainly a high-level opponent. We’re happy to license him. We’re happy he’s a California fighter.”

Indeed, California would be happy McGregor is now a fighter in their state, as any boxing match he’d participate in would certainly brings multiple millions to ‘The Golden State.’ And with ‘The Notorious’ recently proclaiming he wants a stake in the company with new owners WME-IMG, perhaps he’ll be content to make money boxing while his contract with the UFC gets figured out.

After all, that’s a hot topic in the UFC right now. Just earlier today, Georges St-Pierre spearheading a board of five high-profile fighters to form the MMA Athletes Association (MMAAA) in order to help fighters earn the money they deserve for putting their health on the line, among many other things. They would certainly love to have a fighter like Conor McGregor align with their efforts.

In the meantime, will Ireland’s most infamous fighter finally face off with boxing’s biggest and baddest champ?
