Travis Browne and Fabricio Werdum are set to do battle on Apr. 19 at UFC on FX 11 in Orlando, Fla.
The scintillating matchup of striker vs. grappler will ultimately determine the heavyweight division’s true No. 1 contender. One that will encounter champion Cain Velasquez for the title sometime within the next year.
Now it seems as if Florida’s fight fans will witness yet another sensational Octagon matchup, as it was recently announced by Fox Sport’s Mike Chiappetta that lightweight standouts Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone and Edson Barboza will also be fighting on the card.
Cerrone, who has recently been called out by rising knockout specialist Abel “Killa” Trujillo and crafty veteran Cole Miller, will be looking to extend his two-fight win streak after submitting Evan Dunham back in November and head-kicking Adriano Martins into oblivion just a few weeks ago.
Barboza, who is one of the most calculated and flashy strikers in the division, will attempt to extend his own win streak of three after getting upset by veteran Jamie Varner back at UFC 142.
Now while this fight is arguably the toughest of Barboza‘s career, he’s been evolving as a top-level title threat for years. One who is famously known for wheel-kicking Terry Etim on queue in just his fourth UFC appearance.
But that doesn’t mean he’ll be able to maintain offensive potency against former WEC champion and No. 8 ranked UFC lightweight Cerrone.
As one of the true veterans in the division, Cerrone can get it done on all levels. Whether it’s in the clinch, on the ground, in open space or in front of the microphone, the Greg Jackson-coached kickboxer knows how to win.
So while Barboza‘s flashiness and overall potential as a 28-year-old knockout guru might suggest this is his time to shine, don’t sleep on Cerrone.
This is one hell of a fight and one that will showcase two of the very best kickboxers in the game today.
