Georges St-Pierre is not seeking $50 million to fight Anderson Silva.
The UFC welterweight champ deflected the rumor on Saturday during an interview with 985sports:
“I have not been informed of this. It is not true. Nobody told me about it, and I am in France now. I have not seen the article [Mike Straka]. I will not comment.”
In the latest episode of “The MMA Beat,” Straka announced that a close source told him St-Pierre would ask the UFC for $50 million to fight Silva.
According to the source, a fight against a bigger and stronger opponent like Silva would be an uphill battle for St-Pierre, who makes $8 million a fight. The reluctance to accept the super fight stems from a fear of St-Pierre being seriously hurt by Silva. If his career is shortened, St-Pierre wants to be well-compensated for taking the fight.
The rumor was given life by Straka’s tongue and an unknown source. It was never publicly confirmed by St-Pierre or any of his coaches.
There have been varying rumors surrounding the St-Pierre and Silva super fight for weeks. Perhaps, people are searching for a reason why the fight has yet to come to fruition.
St-Pierre and Silva aren’t getting any younger, and a bout between the two would help the UFC do historic ticket sales and pay-per-view buys.
UFC President Dana White has worked around the clock in attempts to make the dream fight a reality, but unfortunately, St-Pierre really hasn’t shown much interest in moving up in weight.
Firas Zahabi, St-Pierre’s manager, has even started pushing for a welterweight title fight against former Strikeforce champ Nick Diaz.
