Everybody wants in on the Conor McGregor sweepstakes – especially the WWE.
McGregor has made quite a name for himself over the years in the mixed martial arts (MMA) world; ending Jose Aldo’s longtime undefeated streak, becoming the first dual-weight champion in UFC history, and establishing himself as the face of the UFC. He took things a step further in the combat sports world by making his professional boxing debut against, arguably, the greatest of all time in Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Despite losing the fight via 10th round TKO, “The Notorious One’s” brand has never been bigger. While it is expected that the Irishman’s next bout will come against interim 155-pound champion Tony Ferguson to unify their titles, the possibilities for McGregor’s next move vary widely. An appearance over in the professional wrestling world in WWE is certainly not out of the realm of possibilities – just ask WWE Hall Of Fame commentator Jim Ross.
Ross was recently a guest on The Herd with Collin Cowherd to promote his new book and was asked about the possibility of seeing McGregor in WWE. “JR” claimed that there isn’t a doubt in his mind that McGregor will one day take home a massive check from WWE for a one-off appearance (quotes via EWrestlingNews):
“I know that he’s an amazing performer and an amazing talent. I have great respect for the UFC, everything they do, and him,” Ross said. “There’s no way you can convince me that Conor McGregor will not earn a massive check from Vince McMahon someday in the future.
“It will not be a career deal, it would be a one-off special occasion, massive promotion, I would suggest maybe at a WrestleMania somewhere down the road. But the attraction is there, the marketing is there, the money is there, so why not make it happen? So I think Conor is guaranteed for that.
“And I also think Conor’s not done in the octagon either, I think he’s a competitor. He likes to prove that he’s the alpha-male.”
