The outcry for a superfight between UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva and UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre is arguably louder than ever right now.
During a recent addition of Dave Meltzer’s Wrestling Observer Radio, Meltzer stated that he spoke to the higher ups of the UFC about some possible scenarios for 2013, the biggest being that “The Spider” may vacate the middleweight title to take on St-Pierre.
Meltzer also mentions that the fact that Lyoto Machida, one of Silva’s Black House teammates, weighed in at just 201 pounds for his light heavyweight bout with Ryan Bader for UFC on FOX 4, could be an indicator he is ready to drop down to middleweight should he fail at his next light heavyweight title bid.
Additionally, Ed Soares, who manages both Machida and Silva, was supposed to have a meeting with UFC president Dana White last weekend, but the meeting never came to fruition, according to MMA Mania.
Could the discussion of Silva switching weight classes have been the main topic of conversation?
The only thing certain here is that Silva making the cut to 170 pounds is far from a done deal. St-Pierre is scheduled to return from a nearly one-year layoff at UFC 154 in November to face interim UFC welterweight champion Carlos Condit.
Should Condit win, any talk of GSP vs. Silva immediately goes down the drain. However, if “Rush” wins, Silva has made the 170-pound weight limit before (though not since Jan. 2006), and both fighters have shown disinterest about moving up in weight.
Both Silva and UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones do not find the appeal in a superfight between one another, while St-Pierre is hesitant to meet Silva at middleweight or a catch weight due to the size difference.
