Brandon Vera and Mauricio Rua combated one another in a battle of attrition that nearly lasted four full rounds on Saturday, August 4. The bout formed the main event of UFC on FOX 4.

While Shogun was able to achieve the victory most expected he would, he did not do so with the ease that was predicted. On the contrary, Brandon Vera made it about as tough as possible on the former champion, thwarting his title aspirations, though conceding victory.

Even in a loss the performance was a coup for Vera, who exceeded general expectations and surprised no small number of critics.

The following slideshow is a list of five things that we learned from Vera’s grueling performance at UFC on FOX 4.

An errand eye poke ended things prematurely between Octagon newcomer Wagner Prado (7-0) and Phil ‘Mr. Wonderful’ Davis (9-1) who squared off Saturday night on the preliminary card of UFC on FOX 4.

Davis would accidentally poke Prado in the eye just 88-seconds into the light heavyweight fight, drawing blood from under the eye. Despite being given time to recover, Prado told the cage-side doctor that he was still unable to see, resulting in a “No Contest” between the two.

Fans at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California let out a chorus of boos once the official announcement was made.

At the post-fight press conference, UFC president Dana White let the media know that he and matchmaker Joe Silva had already spoken about when the two fighters might meet again.

“Me and Joe were talking, and maybe we put them on in Minneapolis provided his eye is okay and he doesn’t have any problems, we’ll move them to that card.

White is of course talking about UFC on FX 5, which is scheduled for October 5, 2012 at the Target Center in Minneapolis.

At UFC on FOX 4, Ryan Bader failed to capitalize on an opportunity that may have propelled him into a bout for UFC gold, an honor that instead went to Bader’s victorious opponent, Lyoto Machida.

Machida frustrated Bader during the first round of their contest before ending things in the opening minutes of the second. That Bader was thoroughly outmatched for the entire duration of the fight only emphasizes the disappointment and despair of the defeat.

The performance was telling of many things, including several about Bader’s place in the UFC’s light heavyweight division. Here, we will take a look at five things we learned about Bader, and examine the importance of each, as he attempts to recover from a devastating loss.

UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos (15-1) appeared well on his way to facing former title holder Cain Velasquez (10-1) this fall in a rematch for the Ultimate Fighting Championship strap.

Now it appears that Dos Santos has changed his mind, telling UFC president Dana White over lunch that he feels the former Strikeforce title holder is a “punk” with a “big mouth” and that he’d love nothing better to do than to “knock him out.”

White broke the news to he media late Saturday night following the UFC on FOX 4 post-fight press conference.

“I sat down with Junior dos Santos yesterday, who is the nicest guy in the world, right? Seriously, you’ve all talked to Junior, he’s the nicest guy in the world. He said, ‘I have nothing but respect for Cain Velasquez. I like him as a person and as a fighter, and I think he deserves the shot at the title, but I do not want to fight him,’ which is not what he said a month ago. He said, ‘Alistair Overeem is a punk, he’s got a big mouth, he’s been saying lots of bad things about me, and I want to knock him out and I want to knock him out now.’ And I said, ‘Junior, I like that. Alright.’ He wants the fight. I’m not saying that’s what’s happening, I’m just saying that’s what he’s saying.”

“He wants this fight. He actually…(Dos Santos’ management) were blowing me up, they wanted to meet with me, meet with me. We went to lunch yesterday and he just off on what a punk he thinks Alistair Overeem is and how bad he wants to knock him out….”

“He’s my heavyweight champion. He’s one of those guys who, again like Frankie Edgar, is one of those guy who’s done everything we’ve ever asked of him, and he really has never asked much of us, so when a guy like him comes to me and wants something, yeah, I have to consider it.”

Overeem is currently sitting out a six month suspension following a positive steroid test last April. The two fighters had been scheduled to meet in May at in the main event of UFC 146 but the positive test and subsequent suspension by the Nevada State Athletic Commission put that bout on hiatus.

‘The Reem’ will not have a chance to apply for a new license till at least December 27, 2012.

Velasquez beat Octagon newcomer Antonio ‘Bigfoot’ Silva convincingly at the UFC 146 event to earn himself a rematch with ‘Cigano’.
