One of boxing’s very best will be back inside the ring later tonight (Sat., May 4, 2024) live on DAZN pay-per-view (PPV) from inside T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, as Canelo Alvarez puts his undisputed super middleweight title on the line against fellow countryman Jaime Munguia.

While Alvarez is a sizeable betting favorite heading into Saturday’s title fight, Munguia is a talented fighter who could give the champ more than he bargains for. Munguia is currently undefeated at 43-0 and has left 34 of his opponents unable to continue. There will certainly be an experience advantage in favor of Canelo, but Munguia has the skill and physical makeup (he’ll have a two-inch reach advantage) to turn some heads in “Sin City.”

The fight itself should deliver from start to finish, but there’s a secondary storyline that will play out Saturday night as well. That will be the ongoing feud between Canelo and former promoter Oscar De La Hoya. Things turned ugly at this week’s press conference between the two and De La Hoya just issued a cease and desist letter to Alvarez following comments about “Golden Boy” stealing money from Gennady Golovkin and other boxers.

Saturday’s fight under the bright lights of T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas has all the fixings. Check out the official streaming details below so you don’t miss a second of the action:

Tonight (Sat., May 4, 2024), Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (60-2-2, 39 KO) returns for what has become a tradition for him — one of his bi-annual fights on either Cinco de Mayo or Mexican Independence Day. However, his opponent, Jamie Munguia (43-0, 34 KO), isn’t exactly the most desired combatant out there. Indeed, many were hoping for David Benavidez, but that fight never materialized, and Benavidez decided to move up to 175 pounds.

So, what makes Munguia a dangerous opponent for Canelo?

A good right hand and the ability to pressure on a near-constant basis. He’s had issues when his adversary has been on the front foot (e.g. Sergei Derevyachenko) but the vast majority of his career has been him influencing the action. That and honestly what seems to be the slow erosion of Canelo’s lofty skillset.

Canelo hasn’t quite shown the same head movement and glove work from his excellent run up to the Dmitry Bivol fight. Fight fans are starting to wonder if Alvarez’s power might also be waning, as he’s gone the distance in all of his last three fights. This includes a not-so-Murderer’s Row of 40-year old Gennady Golovkin, a perceived easy match with John Ryder (whom Munguia also just knocked out) and Jermell Charlo, a natural 154-pound fighter going up two divisions. He’s also faded in all three of his fights, which could play into Munguia’s fists if he can pressure his fellow countryman and make him work all night.

Or, maybe he’s just distracted by former promoterand cease and desist senderOscar de la Hoya? Probably not, but you never know.

All that said, Canelo is one of boxing’s truly best fighters and his sole loss in the past 20 fights came from him going up a weight class in a quest for glory. There’s a reason he’s a -510 favorite. Munguia likes to come forward and Alvarez likes to counter-punch. On paper, these styles could be very interesting. But, if we’re being persnickety, maybe stuff Canelo over 10.5 rounds into your parlay at a more attractive -250?

The odds are in.

Cha-Ching! Canelo Expected To Earn Massive Cinco De Mayo Payday

Canelo Alvarez will once again be heavily compensated for his return to the boxing ring this evening (Sat., May 4, 2024) live on DAZN pay-per-view (PPV) from inside T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, as the Mexican superstar defends his undisputed super middleweight title against undefeated bruiser Jaime Munguia.

Alvarez may be getting up there in age and not dominating the competition quite like he used to, but the 33-year-old champion is still one of the best fighters in boxing today. At the very least, he remains one of the most popular fighters in combat sports. There’s no disputing that, which is why Canelo stands to earn another massive payday for Saturday’s title defense in “Sin City.”

According to Marca, Canelo is expected to bank a ridiculous $35 million salary from Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) for his fight against Munguia. The two sides had some issues earlier in the year, but that number seems to be the going rate for Alvarez’s services. Of course, Canelo can earn much more through PPV revenue, ticket sales, and more.

As for Munguia, it’s unknown at this time what the undefeated fighter stands to earn for his fight against Canelo, but it will undoubtedly be the biggest purse of his career. Some are estimating the 27-year-old fighter will walk away with around $10 million guaranteed (double his current net worth) before any secondary revenue is calculated. Not too shabby for a fighter who is currently a 4-1 betting underdog.

“Obviously, without a doubt, it’s the best purse, but thank God I’ve done very well and I’m not surprised, I’m not impressed,” Munguia told Marca. “What matters to me is to go, give a good fight and win, because what’s coming is going to be much better.”
