A.J. McKee is planning on making Darrion Caldwell get into a fight in the main event of Bellator 253. Darrion Caldwell thinks A.J. McKee saying he tore LCL is fake. McKee said he underwent surgery in January after tearing his knee in the Derek Campos fight. Yet, for Caldwell, he doesn’t understand how McKee is healthy all of the sudden and calls it fake news. “Not at all,” Caldwell told MMA Junkie following the […]
Darrion Caldwell thinks A.J. McKee saying he tore LCL is fake.
“Not at all,” Caldwell told MMA Junkie following the Bellator 2020 showcase press conference. “I feel like A.J.’s a slick dude, and he’s trying to sandbag it and take me off my game. But I will be ready June 6 to put hands on you, and elbows and knees. I don’t think that injury is any bit real at all. Fake news.”
Entering this fight, Darrion Caldwell is confident he’ll get his hand raised as he doesn’t know where McKee can beat him. He suspects the undefeated contender will try to knock him out but says that it’s easier said than done.
“In all honesty, what’s his gameplan?” Caldwell asked. “To knock me out, he said? I think that’s a tough task to accomplish as I don’t really get hit, you know? It’s not something [where] I go in there and just take punches and take damage. So I think he’s going to run into a situation where he’s looking for one thing, and he’s not going to get it.”
In this fight, Darrion Caldwell also believes that McKee won’t be able to deal with his athleticism.
“He ain’t faced color. He ain’t faced me,” he said. “I’ve seen him when he fought somebody athletic. He’s just not the same. He’s going to go in there and beat up all the white boys, then when he fights somebody real, like he’s about to, it’s a different story. That’s ultimately what it boils down to. I’m a different beast, and that’s going to show on June 6.”
In the end, Caldwell is confident he will hand McKee his first pro loss and then will go on to win the featherweight grand prix to become Bellator’s featherweight champion.

Bellator has been dealt a massive blow as it has been revealed A.J. Mckee suffered a torn LCL in his last fight and had surgery. McKee last fought in December where he beat Derek Campos by submission. Yet, he tore the LCL just 30 seconds into the scrap. The news of the injury was first […]
Bellator has been dealt a massive blow as it has been revealed A.J. Mckee suffered a torn LCL in his last fight and had surgery.
The undefeated prospect got surgery in January. So, whether or not he’ll be able to fight Darrion Caldwell in the semis is uncertain at this time.
“The doctor actually told me not to get surgery,” McKee said to MMA Fighting. “He said if I plan on fighting, don’t get the surgery. The recovery time is four to eight months. The fight is exactly, let’s see, I got the surgery end of January, so February, March, April. It’s cutting it close, you know what I mean, to be fully recovered and whatnot.
“But for me, it’s like my dad said, ‘If you’re not 100 percent, you’re not gonna fight. Your record, where you’re at right now, it’s not worth risking for a million dollars,’ just because of the caliber that not only he feels, but I feel that I’m at and just continuing to get better.”
A.J. McKee’s dad, Antonio believes his son will be able to fight in June when the semis are expected to take place. Yet, he hasn’t decided if he will be able to continue in the grand prix.
“Out of respect out of whoever is going to fill in for me, if I choose not to fight, I would want them to have a full camp so that I’m not just feeding them to a wolf,” McKee said. “I want to give them that opportunity to prepare for battle.
“So I would say six-to-eight weeks for sure. Six-to-eight weeks I’ll know and I’ll give Bellator the green light or the red light.”
This is no doubt a massive blow if McKee can’t continue as many pegged him to be the future champion of the division.

Bellator concluded the round of 16 of their Featherweight Grand Prix at Bellator 228 last night in Inglewood, California.
Already moving on to the quarterfinals was Emmanuel Sanchez, Derek Campos, Adam Borics, and Pedro Carvalho. In the second part, it was A.J. McKee, Darrion Caldwell, Daniel Weichel, and Patricio Freire who got their hand raised.
Following all the fights, Bellator decided to a selection show where fighters could choose one of four dates, or an opponent if the options was available. In a random draw by picking cards the order and what they choose are as follows.
McKee received first pick, chose December.
Borics received the second pick, chose January
Caldwell received the third pick, chose March
Weichel received the fourth pick, chose February
Sanchez received the fifth pick and chose Weichel in February.
Campos received the sixth pick and chose McKee in December
Carvalho received the seventh pick and chose Caldwell in March
Freire received eighth pick and the “champ’s choice,” which gave him the power to override and choose whatever fight he wanted. He chose Carvalho in March. Meaning, Caldwell was shifted to fight Borics in January.
So, in the quarter-finals, the matchups are as follows.
A.J. McKee vs. Derek Campos – December 2019
Adam Borics vs. Darrion Caldwell – January 2020
Emmanuel Sanchez vs. Daniel Weichel – February 2020
Patricio Freire vs. Pedro Carvalho (featherweight title on the line) – March 2020
Bellator got a ton of props from fans, media, and fighters for the creativity behind this. They let the fighters pick the bracket, and when, where, and who they wanted to fight.
At this time, December is set to be in Hawaii, January at The Forum, and Scott Coker said they are still working on February and March, where February will most likely be on Connecticut.
