Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov, the father of UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov has died aged 57 due to complications stemming from catching the coronavirus according to reports. Russia Today reports Nurmagomedov Sr. died on Friday after being informed by Chechen Republic leader and friend of the family Ramzan Kadyrov.
Nurmangomedov first fell ill in April with pneumonia-like symptoms but COVID-19 was not confirmed. The renowned MMA coach told media he was feeling fine after his health scare but from his condition quickly deteriorated. Nurmagomedov was sent to a Russian military hospital for further treatment, it was there he tested positive for the coronavirus before suffering a heart attack brought on by the disease.
Abdulmanap underwent heart surgery and was placed into a medically-induced coma. The 57-year-old eventually awoke from the coma but was struggling to speak. On June 23 Khabib Nurmagomedov provided the following update on his father’s health, he said.
“I visit him, he recognizes me, but there’s no communication because he’s connected to [medical] devices. Every day they let me in, I spend half an hour [with him], I hold his hand. When I ask: ‘Father, do you recognize me?’ He gestures and lets me know.”
“These are some of the best doctors in the world… I have no concerns [about my father’s care], many thanks to them. In that respect, all’s well. It takes time, because the consequences are very difficult, and the rehabilitation period will be long and tough.”
Unfortunately, despite signs of improvement Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov reportedly succumbed to the illness earlier today.

Nurmagomedov was supposed to face off against Tony Ferguson at UFC 249 but the ongoing global pandemic and subsequent travel issues meant that fight was scrapped. He will now face the newly crowned interim lightweight champion Justin Gaethje later this year – reportedly at UFC 253 in September. It remains to be seen if his father’s ongoing health issues will impact his ability to compete this summer.

Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov, the father of UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov is making progress in his ongoing battle with ill health according to MMA manager Ali Abdelaziz who oversees his sons career.
Nurmagomedov Sr was first reported to be ill back in April but later told media he is feeling fine. His condition deteriorated rapidly from there and he was placed into a medically induced coma last month. A report from Russia yesterday claimed Nurmagomedov Sr remained in the same critical condition and was yet to awake from the coma. MMA manager Ali Abdelaziz has now contradicted that report by saying his client’s father is making positive progress in his recovery.
“Khabib is very strong, his family is very strong and his father is very strong,” Abdelaziz told ESPN. “He’s improving. He opened his eyes, responding a little bit — good sign. Allah is in control. We have faith he will be better, but at the end of the day, it’s completely up to his health whether it progresses or not. But he’s progressing, and we’re very happy about this.”
Combate believes Khabib Nurmagomedov will defend his belt against interim titleholder Justin Gaethje in September at UFC 253. The lightweight champion has thrown himself into training during his father’s ill health and is super motivated to face off against ‘The Highlight’ later this summer according to Abdelaziz.
“I think Khabib’s father being sick has motivated him more,” Abdelaziz said. “He’s training every day, two times a day. He’s in camp already. Me and him were talking and I said, ‘Hey, get your mind off, do what you need to do.’ He’s always training. He’s a true mixed martial artist. Same with Gaethje. They are both great guys and they want to fight. It’s a dream fight.”
