Deciding the right time to retire is always tough for a professional MMA fighter, but some don’t even get to make that choice, with serious injuries and ailments leaving them with no option but to hang up their gloves for good.

In this article, we’ll look at 10 stars whose time in the sport ended prematurely while they were still in the prime years of their career, and find out what became of them afterward.

Genki Sudo

Genki Sudo is fondly remembered for his remarkable fight entrances while fighting in Japan that were akin to mini-concerts with elaborate costumes, carefully choreographed dance routines and pyrotechnics.

He was also one of Japan’s best fighters, competing for the likes of the UFC, K-1, Pancrase, Rings and Heroes, and claiming victories over the likes of Nate Marquardt, ‘Kid’ Yamamoto, Mike Brown, Ramon Dekkers, Hiroyuki Takaya and Royler Gracie over the course of his 16-4-1 career.

However, in 2006 after a first-round triangle choke submission win over Damacio Page at the K-1 Premium Dynamite!! Event, Sudo delivered the shock news that he was retiring from the sport with immediate effect.

It transpired that Sudo had been suffering from a serious recurring neck injury that had left doctors fearing that he might suffer paralysis if he continued fighting.

After retiring, Sudo accepted a job as the manager of the Takushoku University’s wrestling team, while he’d also go on to appear in several movies and has written dozens of books.

Sudo also formed the music and dance band World Order, who have released several albums, performed around the world, been featured on numerous TV shows and have a YouTube channel with close to 100 million views.

Sudo retired from being the lead singer in the band back in 2015 but has remained involved as the director and producer for the group.

29-year-old veteran Irish mixed martial artist Aisling Daly announced her retirement from mixed martial arts earlier today (Jan. 30, 2017).

Taking to her official Instagram page to announce the news, Daly said that a recent brain scan had shown an abnormality as well as the remnants of a small hemorrhage:

I will be officially retiring from the sport of MMA. This past year a routine brain scan showed up evidence of an abnormality, the remnant of a small haemorrhage that had taken place at some point in the months previous. It would be unlikely I would be medically cleared to compete again, even in the event I could find a doctor who would clear me it would be very unwise for me to continue to compete with the risks involved. My career has ended prematurely but I’m very grateful for my long list of achievements, I am and will always be ‘Ais the first’ for so many things, my legacy set in stone in the history of Irish mixed martial arts. I am the countries first ever world champion, the first and only female to ever do it. I have and always will give back to the sport which has given me so much. I would like to thank from the bottom of my heart the fans who have supported me tirelessly through various parts of the journey. Without this support there is no sport of MMA as we know it. I would like to thank my good friends and close team mates, there is no substitute for the genuine loyalty built between people over years of blood, sweat and tears. I am truly most grateful for my wonderful family, who were there to pick up the pieces throughout my entire career and especially now when my dream fell apart. This would have been intolerable without their help, emotionally and financially. They say you can’t choose family but I would want no other. Now starts the next chapter of my life. I’m very fortunate to have grown up within such an outstanding organisation as SBG. I am equipped with the skills to be an exceptional coach and member of the martial arts community and I look forward to seeing what challenges lie ahead for me. “New Beginnings are often disguised as painful endings.”? Training out of the now infamous Straight Blast Gym in Dublin, Ireland, Daly hasn’t competed since Oct. 2015 when she scored a decision victory over Erika Almeida at UFC Fight Night 76. Prior to that she had split wins and losses in the Octagon, picking up a submission victory over Alex Chambers and dropping a decision to Randa Markos.

Overall, Daly holds a 16-6 professional mixed martial arts record including five victories by knockouts and eight victories by submission.

We here at LowKickMMA wish Daly the best in the next chapter of her life.

TUF 20 Finale Weigh-In Results: Charles Olivera Misses Weight AGAIN, Aisling Daly Comes in Heavy as Well

(Rose Namajunas and Carla Esparza make it official. Props: YouTube/UFC. The complete weigh-in video is after the jump. It’s worth watching for Angela Hill’s hair and Bec Hyatt’s middle finger.)

The TUF 20 Finale weigh-ins went down earlier today in Las Vegas, and headliners Carla Esparza and Rose Namajunas hit their 115-pound strawweight limits on the button. But not everyone was so successful. Featherweight Charles Oliveira missed weight for the third time in his UFC career, hitting 147 pounds on his first attempt, and only shedding a half-pound after an hour. As a result, 10% of his purse will go to opponent Jeremy Stephens. The last time we saw Oliveira, he had missed weight by five pounds before UFC Fight Night 50, and was pulled off the card due to health concerns.

TUF 20 castmember Aisling Daly also screwed the pooch, coming in at a whopping 118 pounds for her strawweight matchup against Alex Chambers. Daly was given one hour to make weight, but decided not to make another attempt; she will surrender 20% of her purse to Chambers. Complete TUF 20 Finale weigh-in results are below…
