A heavyweight headliner between Ciryl Gane and Alexander Volkov is set for the summer.

That’s according to ESPN’s Brett Okamoto who reported Saturday that it will take place at the UFC’s upcoming June 26 event after both sides agreed to the fight.

“Per sources, Ciryl Gane (@ciryl_gane) vs. Alexander Volkov (@AlexDragoVolkov) will headline UFC Fight Night on June 26. Big fight for both. And possibly of note, Derrick Lewis still without a dance partner as of now. Top of that division still in the air.”

For Gane, it’s a chance to go into potential title contention.

The undefeated Frenchman is coming off a drab unanimous decision win over Jairzinho Rozenstruik. However, he got the job done and is currently on a five-fight winning streak which also includes a second-round TKO win over former champion Junior dos Santos.

Alexander Volkov, meanwhile, is looking to win his third fight in a row as well as his fourth in five outings. The Russian is coming off a TKO win over Alistair Overeem and a win against Gane could put him next in line for a shot at the heavyweight title.

Francis Ngannou recently became the new heavyweight champion at UFC 260 late last month. As of now, there is no word on a date or opponent for his first title defense. However, it is likely to be either Jon Jones or Derrick Lewis.

Gane despite facing some criticism post-fight, propelled himself into the title mix.

On Tuesday the updated UFC rankings revealed ‘Bon Gamin’ is now ranked at number four in the division.

Up next, it appears Gane will face one of two heavyweight contenders.

Derrick Lewis is one potential opponent. ‘The Black Beast’ is coming off one of the biggest wins of his career.

The KO artist displayed his ungodly power to stop Curtis Blaydes with one shot at UFC Vegas 19.

Lewis is currently riding a four-fight win streak and is potentially needs just one more to get another UFC title shot.

Another potential opponent for Gane is Alexander Volkov.

The Russian heavyweight made easy work of Alistair Overeem at UFC Vegas 18, stopping the legendary kickboxer inside two rounds.

The win was Volkov’s second in a row and cemented his place in the heavyweight top five.

In an exclusive interview with James Lynch of LowKickMMA, Gane broke down a potential fight between him and Lewis, he said.

“With Lewis, I’ll fight more like with Jairzinho. I fight with fight IQ, distance and yes be careful because with this guy he can knock you (out) with one punch. So just be careful.”

Gane also considered a potential fight with Volkov, he said.

“Me with Alexander Volkov is an interesting fight. He has a good range. He is really tall and he has really good striking. He has really dangerous striking. So, yeah, this fight is gonna be more hard than Lewis I think.”

Alexander Volkov is hoping to get a title shot after easing past Alistair Overeem in the UFC Vegas 18 main event.

Volkov and Overeem where scheduled to fight for five, five minutes rounds on Saturday evening. However, ‘Drago’ needed little more than one to get the job done. He was able to repeatably hurt Overeem throughout the first round before finishing the job in round two.

The Russian revealed post-fight that he is targeting UFC gold.

“I want to fight for the belt, for sure,” Volkov said. “But we’ll see. We’ll have some good fights in the future at heavyweight, so we’ll see how it finishes and we’ll see what will be my place. But for sure, I would like to take a title shot.

“I feel really excited and I feel great. It’s my time, and I’m coming for the belt.”

The heavyweight strap will be up for grabs at UFC 260 on March 27 when Stipe Miocic will look to defend his crown against Francis Ngannou in an eagerly anticipated rematch. After that, former light-heavyweight king Jon Jones is expected to get an immediate shot at the winner in his heavyweight debut.

A title shot seems unlikely to be Volkov’s next fight. The Russian is 3-2 in his last five fights having lost to fellow contenders Curtis Blaydes and Derrick Lewis who will square off on February 20. Volkov may need to avenge one of those losses or beat the winner of Jairzinho Rozenstruik vs. Ciryl Gane before he can be considered worthy of a shot at UFC gold.

Volkov attributes his recent success to the work he’s done in camp. ‘Drago’ insists he will only improve as he continues to train and at just 32 years old he’s certainly got time to earn his title shot.

“I work a lot. I feel now I’m in really good shape, but for sure in the future I’ll be feeling better and better. So this is not the end of my shape and my form,” Volkov said. “I will get better and I’m trying to make hard camps, working on all my skills that I didn’t do before, and I’ve become better.” (Transcribed by MMA Junkie)
