It looks like former UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos’ Octagon return will have to wait a bit longer. “JDS” is now out of his scheduled UFC Moscow heavyweight bout against Alexander Volkov on November 9.

MMA Fighting confirmed an initial report from Russian outlet RT Sport. Per the report, the ex-heavyweight champion has been dealing with a bacterial infection in his leg. He has been hospitalized for over a week now. Dos Santos has undergone two procedures. One to introduce a drain, and the other to remove it.

His scheduled fight with Volkov was to be the last fight on his current UFC deal. He suffered a knockout loss to Francis Ngannou back in June. Prior to that, “Cigano” was on a three-fight win streak over names such as Derrick Lewis, Tai Tuivasa, and Blagoy Ivanov. As for Volkov, he hasn’t fought since his upset knockout loss to Derrick Lewis in October of last year.

Volkov was winning the fight until a late rally from “The Black Beast,” who finished the action late in the fight with some vicious blows. It’s been a rough time for Volkov trying to get back into action.

He was scheduled to face Alistair Overeem back in April, but that bout fell through. Volkov was on a six-fight win streak prior to being knocked out by Lewis, finishing the likes of Fabricio Werdum and Stefan Struve.

The UFC’s return to Moscow is set to be headlined by a pivotal heavyweight encounter between Junior dos Santos and Alexander Volkov.

The news was announced by the promotion on Saturday with the event taking place November 9 at the CSKA Arena in Moscow. It was also announced by Volkov himself on Instagram:

The bout had been targeted for some time now but looks to be finally official.

Dos Santos was last seen in the Octagon earlier this year when his three-fight winning streak was snapped after getting knocked out by Francis Ngannou. Had he won that night, he might have been in contention to challenge Stipe Miocic for the heavyweight title.

As for Volkov, he hasn’t featured since his late knockout defeat to Derrick Lewis at UFC 229 in October last year. Before that setback, “Drago” was on a four-fight winning streak. He was set to return and headline UFC Saint-Petersburg against Alistair Overeem back in April, but had to pull out due to health issues.

The event will be the second in Moscow and just the third in Russia overall. It is expected to air on ESPN+.

What do you think of the headliner? Who do you think will go on to win?

UFC Moscow is set to go down on Nov. 9 and it appears a heavyweight fight will headline the card. The Russian news outlet TASS is reporting that Junior dos Santos will go into hostile territory to take on Alexander Volkov.

dos Santos is coming off of a knockout loss in just 1:11 to Francis Ngannou in the main event of UFC Minneapolis. Before that, he was riding a three-fight winning streak with a decision win over Blagoy Ivanov, then TKO’d Tai Tuivasa and Derrick Lewis, all Fight Night events he headlined.

The Brazilian used to be the UFC heavyweight champion from 2011-2012 as he TKO’d Cain Velasquez to win the title, then defended it against Frank Mir, before losing to Velasquez. Since then, he has been a top contender but has never won it again.

Volkov, meanwhile, is coming off of a knockout loss to Derrick Lewis at UFC 229. Of course, that was the KO with just 11 seconds left that resulted in Lewis getting a title shot. Before then, he was on a six-fight winning streak including being 4-0 inside the Octagon.

The Russian was expected to headline UFC St. Petersburg against Alistair Overeem but was pulled from the event for undisclosed reasons.

Currently, no other bouts after confirmed for UFC Moscow, and the UFC has yet to confirm this one.

Madison Square Garden will host UFC 230 this evening (Nov. 3, 2018) as Daniel Cormier Defends his heavyweight title against Derrick Lewis, we have you covered with all the results.

To say that matchmakers had some challenges putting together UFC 230 would be an understatement. It seemed every other day there was a change to the co-main event or the main event. Hurdles abound, Dana White and the boys (Sean Shelby & Mick Maynard) managed to put together a pretty compelling night of fights for the New York fans.

The most compelling of all is by far the main event of the evening, as “DC” takes on “The Black Beast” just 28 days removed from his knock out of Alexander Volkov at UFC 229.

If Cormier defends the heavyweight title at UFC 230 he will become the first person in company history to defend each of his two titles during his simultaneous reign. Many have discounted Lewis as a serious threat to “DC’s” title, however, the double champ isn’t looking past a deserving Lewis.

This opportunity may have come via a hilarious post-fight interview with Joe Rogan but “The Black Beast” has won nine of his last ten fights; that’s in the UFC’s heavyweight division, that’s basically unheard of. All Lewis needs to do is land one punch on the button and down goes “DC”.

Round One

The fighters exchange leg kicks, Lewis gets the better. He then goes to the head with a kick but Cormier blocks it. DC closes the distance and gets a takedown fairly easy. Cormier is on top landing some decent ground and pound. Lewis just stands up and gets to his feet. Cormier drags Lewis to the ground with a single leg. Cormier opens up with some hard ground and pound. Lewis trying to get to his feet again but DC is landing some strikes.

Round Two

Lewis opens up the second round with a combo and then a switch kick. Cormier backs him up to the cage and flips him to the canvas. Lewis again just stands up. DC drags Lewis down with a front headlock and picks his ankle. Cormier locks in the RNC and Lewis promptly taps.

  •  Daniel Cormier defeats Derrick Lewis via submission (RNC) at 2:14 of round two
