They also gave him a new fight.

Alexander Volkov claims that the UFC promised him a shot at the heavyweight title but then went back on their word.

As seen in the main event of UFC London event (March 17, 2018) on the promotion’s streaming service, UFC Fight Pass, at The O2 Arena in London, England, Volkov knocked out former UFC heavyweight champion Fabrício Werdum. Following the fight, he was calling for a title shot and apparently the promotion agreed.

Going Backwards

However, there was one person who made that all changed. Former UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar. He had to enter into the USADA testing pool that forced him to be tested for six months before fighting again.

UFC President Dana White has gone on record by saying that the plan is to make Lesnar vs. Daniel Cormier for the heavyweight title that is slated to go down in January. Now, Volkov is slated to take on hard-hitting heavyweight star Derrick Lewis at the UFC 229 pay-per-view event.

Alexander Volkov Claims

“Time changed, and it is what it is,” Volkov told MMAJunkie. “For now, Brock Lesnar coming to the UFC is a big name,” he said. “I understand why the UFC put him in a championship fight, because lower ranked fighters like me, Francis Ngannou, Tai Tuivasa, we’re really good fighters, but we don’t have a good name in U.S.”

“This fight gives us time to introduce ourselves. So I will use this fight the best I can use it, and we’ll wait for my title shot.”

The UFC 229 pay-per-view event is set to take place on Saturday, October 6, 2018 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The main card will air on pay-per-view at 10 p.m. ET while the preliminary card will air on FOX Sports 1 at 8 p.m. ET and the promotion’s streaming service, UFC Fight Pass.

Derrick Lewis Updates Status After Visiting Tiger Woods’ Doctor

“The Black Beast” visited Tiger Woods’ doctor to treat his ailing back.

Derrick Lewis’ last few Octagon performances have been hindered by issues with his back.

“The Black Beast” comes off a victory over renowned knockout artist Francis Ngannou at UFC 226. The fight was poorly received by the mixed marital arts (MMA) community, despite Lewis’ victory.

Lewis and Ngannou engaged in a lackluster affair that saw little to no action transpire in the 15 minutes they shared inside the Octagon. In the end, the judges awarded Lewis the unanimous decision victory for playing the role of aggressor somewhat. Now “The Black Beast” prepares to make his return on October 6th.

He’ll challenge fellow top-ranked heavyweight Alexander Volkov in the co-main event of UFC 229 on pay-per-view (PPV). Lewis had been complaining about issues with his back for the past several months.

The issue seemed to be a re-occurring pain that would come and go throughout the course of his fight camps. The Houstonian would receive injections prior to fights in order to deal with the pain during the bouts.

Lewis Is Feeling Better

After a recent visit to a doctor who treated the likes of golfing legend Tiger Woods and former NBA star Tracy McGrady, Lewis feels “brand new.” He told MMA Junkie Radio that, after being injected “like 20 times,” he is feeling much better:

“I was 100 percent yesterday,” Lewis said. “I was taking it slow the last week, but I really turned it up yesterday, and it was feeling real good.”

Lewis also said had he done this treatment a few years ago, he feels as though he’d already be UFC heavyweight champion. Now Lewis hopes to show fans his true potential inside the cage. A scary thought considering what he has already accomplished while apparently not at 100 percent:

“I feel like if I had done this a couple of years ago, I would have been champion,” Lewis said.

“I believe I would have dominated a lot of my fights. To say I’ve been winning with the type of injury I’ve been dealing with, it’s been a blessing. Now, hopefully the fans really see my potential.”

Lewis also detailed how the treatment has prolonged his ability to train without his back flaring up on him:

“Before, I had to train for a little bit, then rest, because my back would flare up,” he said. “Now, I don’t have to worry about that any more. I can go 15 minutes, or 25 minutes, without it hurting.”

UFC 229: Conor vs. Khabib May Have Heavyweight Co-Main Event

Derrick Lewis vs. Alexander Volkov looks like it will serve as the co-main event for UFC 229: Conor vs. Khabib

The post UFC 229: Conor vs. Khabib May Have Heavyweight Co-Main Event appeared first on LowKickMMA.com.

UFC 229: Conor vs. Khabib is already expected to set MMA PPV records, but it appears a heavyweight fight between Derrick Lewis and Alexander Volkov may serve as the co-main event of the evening.

ESPN.com first reported the possible heavyweight scrap and MMAjunkie later confirmed.

Lewis (20-5) is the #2 ranked heavyweight in the world. The only man ranked higher than him is the recently dethroned Stipe Miocic. The Houston native is riding a two-fight win streak. With an impressive win over Volkov Lewis could find himself as the next man up for Daniel Cormier’s heavyweight belt.

Volkov has been on a terror since entering the UFC. He is on an impressive six-fight win streak with the last four coming inside the octagon. He most recently picked apart Fabricio Werdum en route to a fourth-round TKO stoppage over the former champion. A win over Lewis would all but assures the Russian a crack at the heavyweight title.

UFC 229 takes place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on Oct. 6, 2018.

Here is the card so far with the rumored Lewis vs. Volkov fight:

Yana Kunitskaya vs. Lina Länsberg

Sergio Pettis vs. Jussier Formiga

Derrick Lewis vs. Alexander Volkov

Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Conor McGregor
