UFC Fight Night 89 is now in the books, as the event took place earlier today (May 8, 2016) live on FOX Sports 1 from Rotterdam, Netherlands.

The card produced some fantastic fights, and some electrifying finishes which was proven true when the promotion handed out four $50,000 “Performance of the Night” bonuses to Germaine De Randamie, Gunnar Nelson, Stefan Struve, and Alistair Overeem.

De Randamie took on Anna Elmose on the main card, putting her lethal striking skills on full display. After battering Elmose early on, De Randamie finished the fight with a brutal body knee in the first round.

Nelson then met the previously surging Albert Tumenov and came out firing, looking very sharp and elusive in the first round. It was in the second frame, however, when “Gunni” put his elite level submission skills to work, earning a rear-naked-choke victory.

In the co-main event of the evening, Struve faced off with powerful striker Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva, but it was the Dutchman who lit Silva up, scoring a breathtaking 15-second knockout victory.

Overeem was able to keep the momentum going for the Dutch when he clashed with former champion Andrei Arlovski in the evening’s main event. After a first round that likely went his way, “The Reem” came out in the second and finished the job, picking up his fourth straight victory with a TKO stoppage.

It’s beyond safe to say that the UFC made a thunderous Netherlands debut with today’s (Sun., May 8, 2016) wildly successful UFC Fight Night 87 from the Ahoy Rotterdam in Rotterdam, Netherlands.

That was largely due to three knockout wins by three of their home fighters in Alistair Overeem, who demolished former champion Andrei Arlovski with a highlight reel kick, Stefan Struve, who knocked out Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva in only 16 seconds, and Germaine de Randamie, who demolished Anna Elmose with a first-round onslaught of knees.

The card also featured a bevy of other exciting finishes, furthering the success of the first-ever UFC card on Dutch soil. Watch the fighters discuss the thrilling event in the official post-fight press conference here:

A title shot may have been hanging in the balance when Alistair Overeem met Andrei Arlovski in the main event of today’s (Sun., May 8, 2016) UFC Fight Night 87 from the Ahoy Rotterdam in Rotterdam, Netherlands.

Fighting agruably his biggest UFC bout in the promotion’s Dutch debut, the pressure was on “The Reem,” and he delivered in a big way. After a close but calculated first round from Overeem, the former K-1 and Strikeforce champion delivered the emphatic stoppage he required to possibly get a shot at the winner of UFC 198’s Fabricio Werdum vs. Stipe Miocic with an electriftying head kick and a flurry of follow-up punches.

Afterwards, he took the time ot call out the champion and even took it a few steps further by stating he would win and defend his belt in Amsterdam next year. Bold words, to be sure.

For now, watch the full fight video highlights of “Reem’s” massive win over Arlovski right here:

Alistair Overeem Decimates Andrei Arlovski In Rotterdam

A lot was on the line when decorated Dutch veteran Alistair Overeem faced off with former heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski in the main event of today’s (Sun., May 8, 2016) UFC Fight Night 87 from the Ahoy Rotterdam in Rotterdam, Netherlands. As the only man who could conceivably headline the UFC’s Dutch debut, Overeem was looking

As the only man who could conceivably headline the UFC’s Dutch debut, Overeem was looking for a title shot on the strength of a four-fight win streak after he knocked out former champion Junior dos Santos last December.

Arlovski, meanwhile was looking to rebound from a fast knockout loss to title challenger Stipe Miocic at UFC 195, a result that snapped an impressive six-fight win streak for the longtime veteran. The winner at UFC Rotterdam would swim in the notoriously volatile UFC heavyweight waters, while the loser would sink for now.

And of course, everyone was expecting fireworks from the two thunderous knockout sluggers.

The pivotal heavyweight fight started off with the crowd not surprisingly chanting Overeem’s name. He started out calm and calculating, but Arlovski poured it on with some big shots including uppcercuts, a hook to the body, and a knee. The former champ stayed pressuring on Overeem, who landed a quick knee to the body. A clinch saw two big knees to the body and head from Overeem.

“The Reem” finally rushed in, landing a hard shot and a knee. Overeem followed with a hard body kick, and Arlovski slowed as he swung at air. Overeem got another knee and scored a nice trip, following Arlovski to the ground. The home favorite went to work from inside Arlovski’s guard, landing hard right hands only to eat an upkick as the opening round came to a close.

Arlovski came out with a big lunging overhand that only partially landed in the second. He continued pressing the action , but Overeem countered with some stiff punches and two hard kicks. Arlovski fought back, but Overeem landed an absolutely emphatic front kick to the jaw and a follow-up shot that dropped him.

He followed to the ground with a barrage of ground shots to earn the stoppage and quite possibly a title shot, although his toe was dislocated on the front kick. The cageside doctor popped his toe right back into place, but he could be out for some time.

After the win, Overeem had some outspoken words, calling out the champion in his native Dutch:

“I said, we’re gonna get that belt in November. November 12, Madison Square Garden. Werdum-Stipe; may the best man win, but I’m going to take on that winner; I’m gonna beat that winner. And then next year, 2017, we’ll be defending the belt here in Amsterdam Arena.”

Quite the bold statement, but at this point, it’s tough to deny “The Reem” on the heels of four straight wins capped off by this spectacular performance.

Final Result: Alistair Overeem def. Andrei Arlovski via R2 TKO (front kick and punches, 1:12)

Alistair Overeem vs. Andrei Arlovski:

Mike Drahota:

Obviously Overeem had to headline any card for the UFC’s Netherlands debut, and they couldn’t have booked him against a fighter more likely to produce a fan-pleasing slugfest in Rotterdam. Both fighters have enjoyed career resurgences as of late, but it’s “The Demolition Man” who brings more momentum into the bout with his three straight wins, as Arlovski lost his most recent bout to current title challenger Stipe Miocic at UFC 191.

At ages 35 and 37 respectively and possessing 92 total MMA bouts between them, Overeem and Arlovski aren’t young in terms of fighting years, but nearly the entire UFC heavyweight division is in a similar state. They do have an concerning 17 knockout losses between them, however, so there’s little doubt that this one will end before it approaches the cards. I might have said Arlovski held the edge when he was on his win streak and Overeem was getting knocked out, but the Dutch kickboxer seems to have righted the ship after losing some weight and fighting smarter under the tutelage of Greg Jackson.

Any punch could end this fight, of course, but I’m going with Alistair Overeem by first round knockout.

Rory Kernaghan:

Andrei Arlovski and Alistair Overeem are similar in many ways, having both proved to be huge knockout threats in the heavyweight area. But they have both been subject to some very nasty knockouts themselves. Without sounding too cliché, I’m willing to bet the winner is the one who’s chin can hold up the longest. ‘The Pitbull’ recently got starched by Miocic, and I’m also willing to bet that ‘The Demolition Man’ is packing more heat than the Croatian-American. For Arlovski, facing an accomplished K-1 kickboxer with highly dangerous knees and kicks, he’ll need to put forth the best performance of his career in the striking department. Unfortunately, as much of an Arlovski fan as I am, I don’t see this happening. Overeem is too big and strong, and simply has too much to offer Arlovski in the stand-up. ‘Reem’ for the KO round one.

Mike Henken:

This is a very interesting fight in my opinion. Overeem has been riding a hot streak as of late, winning three consecutive bouts with two of those victories coming by way of T/KO. Arlovski, on the other hand, is coming off of a brutal stoppage loss. Both men are very powerful strikers with finishing ability, and I feel as if the fight will play out on the feet. IF it does, I think Overeem’s decorated kickboxing background will just be too much for the “Pitbull”. Overeem by second round knockout.

Stefan Struve vs. Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva:

Mike Drahota:

This bout is a must-win for both of these veteran heavyweights, and it’s also a bout of two more powerful sluggers with questionable chins; a poor man’s version of the UFC Rotterdam main event if you will.

Silva has seemingly been content to rush in and let his opponent hit him in the face to see if he can land some shots of his own, and that strategy has resulted in him losing four of his last six bouts by knockout. Struve hasn’t fared much better, losing three out of his last four, including two by knockout. It’s close, but I feel as this bout will get heated early, and the younger heavyweight will be buoyed enough by his hometown crowd to find the Brazilian giant’s massive chin. Struve with another first round knockout.

Rory Kernaghan:

Stefan Struve and Antonio ‘Bigfoot’ Silva are huge guys that like to strike, and it’s once again a case of a Dutch kickboxer with more than just raw power to offer in the co-main event. Both fighters have some chops in the ground game, but I don’t see this fight taking place on the mat, and again we have an example of ‘chinny’ heavyweights throwing down. So who will emerge victorious? I have to point out that Silva has looked quite ‘different’ since TRT went out the window, but I have a feeling he also may be over the lull in his recent record, and I’m picking him for the win tonight. I like Struve, but I feel his jaw is not made for heavyweight, and this fight won’t make it to the judges. ‘Bigfoot’ with a jaw-smashing KO in round two.

Mike Henken:

Struve and Silva have both struggled quite a bit as of late, as both have lost three out of their last four. The height and reach advantage for Struve should be a key in this fight, but one can’t forget about “Bigfoot’s” devastating knockout power. In the end, I feel as if Struve will use his range and pick Silva apart with the Dutch faithful behind him. Expect a third round TKO from Struve.

Alistair Overeem: Andrei Arlovski Isn’t My ‘Cup Of Tea’

Jackson-Winklejohn trained UFC heavyweights Alistair “The Reem” Overeem and Andrei “Pitbull” Arlovski will do battle in the main event of this Sunday’s (May 8, 2016) UFC Fight Night 89 from Rotterdam, Netherlands.

Although training at the same facility, both men have made it clear that they aren’t necessarily friends, nor training partners. Arlovski, however, recently said that Overeem made it awkward between the coaching staff by asking for the fight.

Telling his side of the story, “The Reem” claims that he wasn’t given too much of a choice as to who his opponent would be:

“It’s a very simple and basic story,” Overeem explained when speaking to FOX Sports on Wednesday from Holland. “Lorenzo (Fertitta) texted me, he said ‘we want you to headline the first ever UFC in Holland and who do you want to fight? Basically we have Andrei Arlovski and Cain Velasquez available but Cain Velasquez is injured so in all probability it will be Andrei Arlovski.

“I replied OK that’s fine. Andrei’s a teammate but we’re not really friends, we don’t hang out, we hardly train together so expect that fight to be fireworks. So the fight got made.”

As far as their relationship goes, Overeem admits that while he doesn’t know the “Pitbull” too well, Arlovski just isn’t his ‘cup of tea’:

“I didn’t know him that well. I know he’s pretty emotional, but other than that I don’t know that much,” Overeem said. “We trained a couple of times together and he is how he is. He’s not my cup of tea. It’s not that I hate him, it’s not that we’re enemies but we don’t train together.”

Responding to Arlovski’s claims regarding the coaching staff, “The Reem” doesn’t sense any awkwardness at all, saying that he also has his own separate coaches that he works with:

“No it’s not awkward. It is what it is,” Overeem said about the coaching situation. “I’ll be working with several coaches I’ve been working with for some time now. The main wrestling coach at Jackson’s and then I have a BJJ (Brazilian jiu-jitsu) coach from Jackson’s, he’s also part of Gracie-Barra in Albuquerque, New Mexico and then I have two other coaches that I’ve worked with extensively before in previous fight camps against Brock Lesnar, Frank Mir, Junior dos Santos.

“So I’m very proud and very confident in my coaches. They’re already proven and we’ve been through a lot together.”

Which heavyweight slugger do you see winning this weekend?
