Alistair Overeem’s return to Glory has been postponed until 2022.

Overeem was set to face Rico Verhoeven at “GLORY: Collision 3” on October 23 before an injury forced him to announce his withdrawal from the fight earlier today.

“To the fans.. I deeply regret that I have to pull out of the fight against Rico Verhoeven Oct 23th.I’ve never pulled out a fight before and trust me, this decision was hard to make. I’ve been dealing with the injury for over a month. Two days before the press conference, a couple of weeks ago, I wasn’t even able to walk straight. After some treatment I felt much better. And since I’ve never been a quitter, I wasn’t going to quit now. I went back in camp. But… the injury got worse again and I could not even fulfill a complete training session. Yesterday my coaches, my medical team and myself had to make the decision to pull out. Oct 23 I was suppose to give the fans a show! I wanted to make sure that everybody in the arena and the ones at home watching, got what they came for; an entertaining high level fight. Even if I was at 90% now, or 80% maybe even, I would have gotten into that ring. But I’m at 40% and that’s not enough. Fighters get out there. We train hard, work hard. There’s a lot at stake. Our sport can get you injured. Not only in the ring, but unfortunately also in preparation. I hope to get some understanding from you guys. Will be back soon! Alistair @glorykickboxing.”

Overeem hasn’t competed in kickboxing since scoring a TKO win over Peter Aerts in the 2010 K-1 Grand Prix Final. The 41-year-old was recently released by the UFC, triggering his return to the sport that helped build him into the combat sports superstar he is today.

Are you disappointed to hear Alistair Overeem’s return to kickboxing has been delayed?

Former UFC heavyweight contender Alistair Overeem has announced that he plans to retire from all combat sports within 18 months.

Overeem was a former champion in DREAM, Strikeforce, and K1. The 41 year old last fought for the UFC in February of this year. He lost that fight to Alexander Volkov via second round TKO. After that bout Overeem was released by the UFC after a nine-year stint with the organization. He was then picked up by kickboxing promotion GLORY. He is scheduled to fight their heavyweight champ, Rico Verhoeven on October 23 in his home country of Holland.

In a recent interview, Overeem talks about wanting to retire with the UFC but not having the chance to. (H/T mmajunkie.com)

“I’m professional – I’m realistic,” Overeem said. “This is something the UFC can do after you lose. That is the terms of their contracts, they can release you from the contract. I’ve had a good time with the UFC. They can do this. Maybe it was time for the younger generation to come in. You can’t forget, I am 41 years old. I am getting a little bit older. If it was up to me I would’ve liked to finish in UFC, but it was not up to me.

“Only the UFC belt is missing from my wall. We were so close. It is what it is. If there would be one thing I could’ve changed or wanted it would be that UFC belt. But on the other hand (I had) so many beautiful victories. So many exciting moments. I’m proud about (my career there).”

The Dutchman also said that while the last couple of months have been crazy, he still has a passion for combat sports.

“A lot has happened in the last six months,” Overeem said.”The release. Finding a new promotion. Getting enthusiastic again. Figuring out training camp. A lot of steps have happened. But I love my life, I love what I’m doing. I love the sport. I’m just happy doing what I’m doing.”

Alistair Overeem is NOT a fan of professional wrestling.

On Monday, the former Strikeforce heavyweight champion appeared on The MMA Hour to announce his return to kickboxing, opposite GLORY heavyweight champion Rico Verhoeven.

The mere mention of his former foe, Brock Lesnar, who returned to the WWE this past weekend at SummerSlam, prompted Overeem to dive into his opinions on professional wrestling.

“The thing is with that whole wrestling thing, I watched it when I was 8, 9, 10 years old,” Overeem told Ariel HeLwani. “Hulk Hogan, Ultimate Warrior, huge fan of those guys. Honky Tonk Man. Great, funny. Andre The Giant. I stopped watching after that, so I’m not watching since [1992, 1993, 1994].

“And just recently, I started looking again on YouTube, and oh my God, this stuff is lame. It’s just lame what these guys are doing. It’s fake. It’s lame. It’s stupid. It’s gay. It doesn’t make any sense.

“It’s lame,” Overeem added when asked about the athleticism and entertainment aspects of professional wrestling. “It’s not even a sport. It’s just lame. It’s bad acting. It’s just lame. Sorry for all the fans of WWE, but I’m just being honest. I’m just giving my opinion. Free country, right? I think it’s lame, and because I hadn’t seen it for 20 years. I never watched Brock fight. I never watched CM Punk fight. I knew they were from WWE.”

‘The Demolition Man’ then turned his attention to CM Punk, who also returned to the WWE at SummerSlam, he said.

“Listen, why did nobody warn CM Punk what he was getting into? Of course, he can’t fight in the UFC. You should have been more honest. You should have warned that guy of what he was getting himself into.

“That man got mentally destroyed in the octagon. And if you look at his WWE stuff…I never watched his WWE stuff, but if you look at it, you can already predict it beforehand — this man is going to have a bad, bad experience in the UFC. He’s going to win, and he’s going to get somebody tougher, or he’s going to lose, and he’s not going to lose once — it’s always two or three times, and he could get hurt. That’s the even worse thing. He could have gotten really hurt.”

Do you agree with Alistair Overeem? Is professional wrestling lame?

Former UFC heavyweight Alistair Overeem will make his return to the fight later this year, as he’ll compete against Rico Verhoeven for the GLORY kickboxing heavyweight world title on Oct. 23 in Arnhem, Netherlands, in a matchup between two of the best Dutch kickboxers in the world.

Overeem returns after a brief hiatus following his UFC release earlier this year, after falling to Alexander Volkov by TKO at UFC Vegas 18. Many believed that Overeem might fight the returning Bellator heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko, but negotiations never materialized and he opted to sign with GLORY.

Both Overeem and Verhoeven made an appearance on the Monday edition of The MMA Hour to announce and promote their upcoming fight, with Overeem seeming thankful for the opportunity to still compete at an elite level despite being past his prime after a long career in fighting.

Verhoeven is considered to be one of the most dominant fighters in the history of kickboxing, after winning the Glory 77 heavyweight tournament earlier this year and an astounding overall record of 58-10.

Overeem joined the UFC after earning titles in Strikeforce in DREAM, fighting for the UFC heavyweight title against then-champion Stipe Miocic at UFC 203. After losing the title against Miocic, Overeem went on an up-and-down run in the UFC, losing four of his last eight fights.

In addition to his MMA success, Overeem is an elite kickboxer, having won the 2010 K-1 Grand Prix. He first competed in his first professional kickboxing match at 17 years old, winning his debut.

Fans have been calling for the Overeem vs. Verhoeven fight for months, especially after Overeem was released by the UFC and many believed his days in MMA were numbered. He has accumulated a 10-4 record over his kickboxing career including three wins by TKO.
