LowKick MMA will be bringing you UFC 259: Blachowicz vs. Adesanya results throughout the afternoon (Sat. 6th. March 2021) from the UFC Apex facility in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Closing the curtain on a massive championship tripleheader, Jan Blachowicz attempts the first defence of his light heavyweight crown as he welcomes incumbent middleweight best, Israel ‘The Last Stylebender’ Adesanya — who himself is hoping to join an elite club in the UFC, as a two-weight world champion held simultaneously.

Taking co-main event status beneath Adesanya at UFC 253 last September, Blachowicz added the vacant UFC light heavyweight crown to prior KSW championship success — stopping two-time challenger, Dominick Reyes with a brutal second round knockout win. Headlining the event, Nigerian-Kiwi striking talent, Adesanya scored his second title knockback of the year with a second frame finish of Paulo Costa in a one-sided beating.

Returning to the Octagon for the first time since June of last year at UFC 250, two-weight world champion, Amanda Nunes looks to lodge her second featherweight title defence as she meets with former Invicta FC champion, Megan Anderson.

Returning to the division at the summer defence, Nunes dominated another former Invicta FC titleholder, Felicia Spencer, on her way to a dominant unaninmous decision victory. For Queensland native, Anderson, she enters the tie on a two-fight rise, stopping both Zarah Fairn dos Santos and Norma Dumont Viana via submission and knockout, respectively.

Receiving major plaudits and attention all throughout fight week and in the build up to the event, Petr Yan and Aljamain Sterling kick off our championship triple threat with bantamweight spoils up for grabs.

Claiming the vacant title at UFC 251 on Fight Island in July last, Dudinka native, Yan bested former featherweight champion, Jose Aldo with a fifth round ground-and-pound stoppage — extending his promotional-perfect run to seven outings.

Earning his rank as number-one contender at 135-pounds, longtime top challenger, Sterling notched his fifth consecutive victory with an opening minute rear-naked choke win over Cory Sandhagen at the above mentioned UFC 250 event, becoming all the more impressive given Sandhagen’s recent wins over Marlon Moraes and Frankie Edgar.

In the first of three title bouts at UFC 259, Petr Yan will look to defend his bantamweight strap against number one contender Aljamain Sterling.

Who’ll win? Let’s see what the LowKickMMA staff think…

Jordan Ellis: I’m really torn heading into this one. Aljamain Sterling is a great fighter on a seriously impressive run. I’m a fan. The New Yorker should already be the bantamweight champion in my eyes. However, do I think he’ll achieve his dream at UFC 259? The simple answer is no. Petr Yan is 27 years old and only getting better. I expect him to cement his status as the best bantamweight in MMA by handling Sterling and retaining his belt tonight. It’ll take something special to beat Yan and I just don’t think it’ll happen anytime soon.

Prediction: Petr Yan

Alex Lough: This is the most intriguing fight on the card for me. I think Sterling is the toughest opponent Yan has gone up against, as both Aldo and Faber were past their primes when he fought them. Aljo has consistently gone up against some of the best the division has to offer over the past five years, and though he hasn’t always come out on top, that experience is invaluable. He’s learned from his mistakes and now fully understands how to utilize his grappling to best effect. Though Yan has looked impressive in his victories, I still think the UFC fast tracked him a little, and it will come back to bite him here. He’s never had to deal with the skill level someone like Funkmaster has on the mat, which gives the challenger a clear path to victory. It’s also worth mentioning that Sterling thought he would get this fight before Aldo cut the line, which means he’s been preparing for Yan for the better part of a year. It’s possible all that time means he could be over-trained, but I think Serra and Longo will have their star pupil firing on all cylinders. Sterling by Decision.

Prediction: Aljamain Sterling

Ross Markey: Despite its billing as the opening of a title tripleheader, tonight’s bantamweight title clash between Petr Yan and Aljamain Sterling is most certainly the most anticipated fight on the entire UFC 259 card for me, at least. It’s, on paper — as competitive a bantamweight matchup gets at this level. Yan has his fair share of questions to ask regarding his championship might despite his status as the division pacesetter, and in the form of Sterling — he’ll face a stern first test as 135-pound crown holder. The main and clear x-factor in this one is the grappling prowess of Sterling. A Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt under former welterweight champion, Matt Serra, Sterling, on his night is capable of scoring a submission win over contenders ranked one to fifteen. I’m going with the East coast in this one. And New.

Prediction: Aljamain Sterling

Ty Rosson: This is the hardest of the three title fights to predict in my mind. I just see so many ways it could end for both fighters. Yan has some of the best striking in the division and if Sterling grabs you, it’s probably light out. For this coin flip of a fight, I’m going Sterling via third round rear naked choke.

Prediction: Aljamain Sterling

Aljamain Sterling: I’m The Khabib Of The Bantamweight Division

Aljamain Sterling is certain he is the bantamweight version of Khabib Nurmagomedov. The 31-year old New York native is confident that his skillset will give the entire bantamweight division fits. It’s hard to argue with Aljamain Sterling, too, seeing that he’s on a very impressive five-fight win streak. Along his way up to the title, […]

Petr Yan

He may have a title defense coming up this weekend, but Petr Yan is already looking towards the future.

The bantamweight champion defends his title for the first time against Aljamain Sterling at UFC 259. At 7-0, Yan has yet to taste defeat in the UFC and expects that to continue this Saturday. In a recent interview with Fanatics View, while he made sure to not overlook Sterling, he said he already has eyes on what’s next for him (H/T MMA Mania).

“If I win easy over Sterling, next fight has to be very big. Sandhagen, he lost to Sterling. I think maybe Dillashaw,” Yan said. “T.J. Dillashaw is back after doping tests and I want to fight him.”

Sandhagen has staked his claim to be the next title challenger following back-to-back knockouts over Marlon Moraes and Frankie Edgar, running his UFC record to 7-1. He has also been a vocal critic of Dillashaw getting a title shot upon his return, saying that decision would be “garbage”.

Dillashaw has recently been cleared to compete again following a two-year suspension from USADA for a failed drug test. Prior to his suspension, Dillashaw was the reigning bantamweight champion after winning and defending the title in a pair of fights against Cody Garbrandt. He has been adamant that he is worthy of an immediate title shot upon his return, but the UFC has yet to say what will happen after UFC 259.

Of course, before any future matchmaking can take place, Yan first has to get past a worthy challenger in Sterling. ‘The Funkmaster has won five in a row, including wins over Jimmie River and Pedro Munhoz, as well as dominating Sandhagen in fewer than 90 seconds. His unique style of wrestling and grappling has given his past opponents fits, and he believes Yan will be no different.

Do you think Petr Yan is overlooking Sterling? Who should he fight next if he wins?
