The UFC Fight Night Abu Dhabi featured preliminary bout saw a battle between two light heavyweights looking to climb their way up the ranks, and the undefeated Azamat Murzakanov did that and then some.

The Russian laid out Alonzo Menifield in a second-round finish to stay unbeaten.

Murzakanov received praise for his first-round performance as he seemed to land at will, pressuring his American counterpart. Menifield, however, appeared to turn the tide in round two, landing some damaging shots that tired and hurt Murazakanov.

Murzakanov, however, answered right back with a stunning pair of left hands before dropping and finishing “Atomic” in brutal fashion.

Since a first-round finish on Dana White’s Contender Series that earned him a UFC contract, Murzakanov has won four straight. That run includes three finishes, defeating Tafon Nchukwi, Devin Clark and Dustin Jacoby, in addition to Saturday’s win.

Menifield, meanwhile, has now lost back-to-back fights after a five-fight unbeaten streak.

On Saturday night, Australian-born Jimmy Crute returned to his home country to kick off the UFC 284 main card. Looking to get back into the win column after dropping his last two bouts, Crute stepped into the Octagon against heavy hitter Alonzo Menifield. Riding back-to-back first-round knockouts, Menifield was intent on going streaking by earning his third straight win in front of a raucous crowd at the RAC Arena in Perth.

Both fighters came out slinging heavy leather early, but Crute quickly changed things up and put his wrestling to work early in the first round. Scoring multiple takedowns on Menifield, Crute went for a guillotine, but Menifield was able to pop his head free and get back to his feet. From there, Menifield uncorked a series of devastating strikes that rocked Crute as the first round came to a close.

Things continued right where they left off in the second round with Menifield in complete control, getting Jimmy Crute to the canvas early and reigned down strikes. Crute was able to weather the storm and was able to turn the tide late in the round, taking Menifield’s back and fishing for a rear-naked choke as the round came to a close.

The third round saw Crute control a majority of the final five minutes. Attempting to complete a single leg, Menifield blatantly trapped the fence to avoid what would have been a certain takedown. As a result, referee Marc Goddard deducted a point from Menifield. Placed back in the 50/50 position, Crute was able to work Menifield to the canvas and maintained control of his opponent through the end of the third.

Official Result: Jimmy Crute vs. Alonzo Menifield is ruled a majority draw (29-27, 28-28, 28-28)

UFC light-heavyweight Jimmy Crute expects to dominate Alonzo Menifield, this weekend in the main card fight as part of UFC 284.

Crute, 26, is set to make his UFC return after over a year following a knee injury that required him to undergo reconstructive surgery. He is scheduled to fight the hard-hitting Menifield on Saturday in front of his home crowd in Perth, Australia, but the pressure doesn’t seem to be getting to the 205er’.

Talking to MMAJunkie, Crute expressed his confidence in the upcoming result, saying that he would ‘blow him [Menifield] out the water’.

“Alonzo’s got some great skills,” Crute said. “I think people underestimate his wrestling and his ability to string things together there. He’s more than just a big, heavy hitter, but just wait. All I’m gonna say is just wait, because I’m gonna blow him out the water. This is different this time. He’s preparing for the wrong person, I promise you.” (H/T MMAJunkie)

Jimmy Crute looking to get back on track

Prior to his long layoff, Crute suffered two back-to-back losses, the first of which followed a knee injury during a fight with Anthony Smith, having to be pulled out after round two. The most recent was at the hand of reigning light-heavyweight champion Jamahal Hill, who savagely knocked out Crute in the first round.

Crute is currently ranked No.12 and is still early on in his fighting career, having already displayed some serious grappling ability with solid striking.
