On Saturday night (May 13, 2017), in the co-main event of UFC 211 from the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas, reigning 115-pound champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk tightened her rattle snake like grip on the strawweight division, scoring a dominant one-sided decision victory over the tough and gritty Jessica Andrade, beating the Brazilian in every round on each of the three judges’ scorecards.
The win marked the fifth defense of Jedrzejczy’s title and she accomplished this victory in impressive fashion, repeatedly peppering Andrade with a lightning quick jab as well an effective combination of elbows, knees and kicks.
After such a victory, the Polish striker should’ve been on top of the world, but she ended her night leaving the post-fight press conference in tears after she was asked a question by MMAFighting’s Ariel Helwani regarding her coach Kami Barzini, who will be making his departure from American Top Team.
Once again speaking with Helwani on today’s (May 15, 2017) edition of The MMA Hour, Jedrzejczyk said that her sadness stemmed from the fact that Barzini is her ‘master’:
“It’s amazing how he changed my wrestling, how he changed my takedown defense,” Jedrzejczyk said. “You can see that in my last fight. That’s the thing. I’d like to work with him. And he’s such a good person. He’s a master of wrestling — he’s my master. But he’s like such a good spirit. He’s like a doctor.
“Before this fight, he said I’m like a lion. I felt like a lion.”
Jedrzejczyk’s wrestling has certainly improved, as she stuffed a plethora of Andrade’s takedown attempts, while springing back up instantly when taken down.
Since joining American Top Team late last year, the 29-year-old champion has clearly continued to elevate her skills and Barzini appears to have been a big part of that process. Overall, however, Jedrzejczyk admits that she’s well taken care of at ATT:
“It’s not just about the work,” Jedrzejczyk said. “They really take care of me. They’re with me all the time. They ask me how I feel after the training, before the training. We hang out together.”
In her next fight, Jedrzejczyk will look to tie Ronda Rousey’s record for the most consecutive title defenses made by a female fighter and some have already begun to consider her the best female fighter in the world. She agrees this may be true, but that doesn’t mean she lacks emotion. Respect also seems to be important to the woman dubbed “Joanna Champion” and she urged all of her fans to show respect:
“Good people connect with good people and this is what happened with us,” Jedrzejczyk said. “Maybe I’m the baddest chick on the planet, maybe I’m the baddest woman in the Octagon, but I’m definitely emotional. I believe in people so badly and I love when people treat me the same way. It’s not just about the money.”
“It’s all about the right relationships with people,” she told Helwani. “To all of you, remember — one day you can be a champion, you can be the richest person in the world, you can be the boss or the director of some big company, but remember the next day you can be at the beginning again. So, respect people and it’s all about the right relationships.”
Do you consider Jedrzejczyk to be the baddest woman on the planet?

After three years of training with American Top Team (ATT), former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) welterweight title holder Robbie Lawler left the camp. Lawler hasn’t revealed which team he will be training with going forward.
Assistant coach at ATT Din Thomas appeared on “The Main Event Zone” (via Flo Combat) to discuss Lawler’s departure. He said the former champion most likely made the right call for himself:
“If it’s a coaching issue where you’re not getting the proper coaching that you need, then you need to find better coaches. If you don’t have the proper sparring partners that you need, then you need to go find the right sparring partners. For whatever reason, Robbie felt that he had to leave. I’m sure he thought about it, and I’m sure it was probably the best decision for him.”
While Lawler may have left ATT, Thomas feels he will still be “Ruthless.”
“Like I said, I don’t know what his reasoning was, but I wish him all the best and I got nothing but love for him. He’s a true champion, he’s a great fighter and he’s a pioneer. I’m sure he will land on his feet wherever he lands, and I’m sure he will continue to crack skulls open.”
There are many times where fighters have left gyms on bad terms. That doesn’t appear to be the case here as Thomas has been respectful of Lawler’s decision. Having said that, the assistant coach also believes ATT will remain as an elite team regardless of who comes and goes.
“The mood is good–it doesn’t matter who’s in. That’s the one thing about the dynamic of American Top Team, because we are such a big team, with or without Robbie we are still going to be the best team in the world.”

After multiple reports surfaced earlier on Wednesday (Jan. 11, 2016), MMAFighting.com has confirmed that former UFC welterweight champion Robbie Lawler has left American Top Team, which is known as of the best mixed martial arts camps in the world.
Lawler, who spent the majority of his early days training at the legendary Miletich Fighting Systems, relocated to Coconut Creek, Florida and made the jump to ATT in 2012. He became the first ATT-trained fighter to win UFC gold when he scored a decision victory over Johny Hendricks at Dec. 2014’s UFC 181 to win the promotion’s welterweight title.
The “Ruthless” one would go on to defend that title twice with memorable decision victories over Rory MacDonald and Carlos Condit before suffering a brutal first round knockout loss to reigning divisional kingpin Tyron Woodley last July.
Lawler’s next fight isn’t booked as of now, although he did momentarily agree to terms for a fight with Donald Cerrone at this past November’s UFC 205, but he elected not to fight after deciding that he needed more time to recover from his loss to Woodley.
As of now, the ex-champion has yet to comment on leaving American Top Team, and it’s unclear which camp he’ll head to next.

Former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) welterweight title holder Robbie Lawler is no longer with American Top Team (ATT). After the initial report from ENT Imports, sources close to the situation confirmed the news to MMAFighting.com‘s Ariel Helwani.
“Ruthless” had a career resurgence with ATT. Lawler has gone 8-2 since returning to the UFC and won championship gold along the way. He was a member of ATT for all of those fights.
Lawler dropped his title to Tyron Woodley at UFC 201 back in July 2016. He was knocked out in the first round. Lawler was set to fight Donald Cerrone at UFC 205 in New York City, but he felt it was too soon to come back from the knockout loss.
ATT welcomed Lawler to training camp back in 2012.
Before returning to the UFC, Lawler went 3-5 in his last eight fights. Despite a unanimous decision loss to Lorenz Larkin in his final Strikeforce bout, “Ruthless” was brought back to the UFC. His first opponent back was Josh Koscheck. Lawler starched Koscheck with a first round knockout.
Lawler eventually fought Rory MacDonald. “Ruthless” was able to pull of an upset win by split decision. He then went on to fight Johny Hendricks twice for the UFC welterweight title. While Lawler was unsuccessful in their first encounter, he captured the belt in the second fight by split decision.
A second fight with “Red King” turned out to be a bloody war. The fight saw a piece of Lawler’s upper lip split and MacDonald’s nose get mangled. In the end, the damage was too much for the challenger and Lawler earned the TKO win in the fifth round.
Lawler followed that performance with a back-and-fourth barn burner against former interim champion Carlos Condit. “Ruthless” dropped Lawler in the fight, but both men swung for the fences until the very end. A strong surge of energy in the final round helped Lawler edge his opponent out for a split decision victory.
