Heading into UFC 129, I thought both welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre and featherweight champion Jose Aldo had a good chance of putting on the kind of performance that would move them up in the pound-for-pound rankings.

GSP did what he usually does and won a dominant unanimous decision over a good opponent in Jake Shields, but he didn’t do anything that makes him leapfrog Anderson Silva at the top of the list. And Aldo won a classic battle with Mark Hominick, but it wasn’t the kind of transcendent performance that could put him on top of the MMA world.

So as we review the Top 10 pound-for-pound fighters in mixed martial arts, there’s no change at the top.

Brazilian Karate Coach Says Machida’s Crane Kick Is "Most Difficult to Land"

Since his highlight reel knockout victory over Randy Couture at UFC 129, Lyoto Machida has been dubbed the “Karate Kid.”

The Brazilian’s style is so unique and complex, as he combines different styles into his arsenal, along with his elusive speed and footwork, including Shotokan karate, Sumo, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai.

To put into perspective just how lethal Machida’s flying crane kick was, look no further than former Brazilian karate coach, Geraldo de Paula, who said that the kick Machida used is very hard to land.

“That was a perfect move. For those who know karate well, it is the most difficult attack to land. For those who know less, it’s fatal. Nobody is expecting a front kick like that, a front punch is more common,” de Paula said to UOL Esportes, courtesy of FightersOnlyMagazine.

“The most common kick is mae geri, when one of the feet doesn’t leave the floor, as Anderson Silva did versus Vitor Belfort [at UFC 126]. Lyoto made a more complex kick, mae tabi geri, taking both feet from the floor with a mid-jump,” he explained.

He went on to explain the intent of the kick is not to attack the face of an opponent, or knock them out.

“As we don’t look for the knockout in tournaments, but points for landing hits on the rivals, it is more used to hit the abdomen. For karate practitioners the most common head attack is circular kicks.”

The mae tabi geri is practiced in all martial arts, but it is mostly utilized in Shotokan karate.

Machida, who was accompanied to the Octagon by his family and actor Steven Seagal, credited both his father and Seagal for helping him perfect the kick.

TORONTO — Georges St. Pierre was barely a few minutes out of his last fight when the MMA world began speculating about what fight he would find himself in next. One thing is certain: the welterweight ranks keep thinning as GSP continues to mow through contenders. And since he’s beaten several of the top-ranked UFC stars already, the UFC might well go to plan B.

Long discussed has been the possibility of a super fight with middleweight king Anderson Silva, but there are a few possible roadblocks. For one, St. Pierre hasn’t committed to moving up a weight class. Also, he’d be forced to wait a few months, as Silva already has a scheduled title defense against Yushin Okami in late August.

The other alternative? How about a champion vs. champion bout with Strikeforce titleholder Nick Diaz?

UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva still has no explanation for the controversial and outspoken Chael Sonnen‘s behavior leading up to their title fight at UFC 117 last August.

“Chael disrespected me, disrespected all of the fans in MMA, Chael disrespected my people in Brazil. Chael no respect nothing,” Silva said Monday on The MMA Hour in a rare interview in English without manager Ed Soares as his translator. “I don’t know what happened with Chael, but he’s a good fighter. Maybe I don’t look at Chael as a bad guy, but sometimes Chael has a problem with the fight. He has no control. I don’t know. This is Chael’s problem.”
