Heads Up MMA Movie and TV Buffs: The ‘CagePotato Cage Cameo Contest’ is Coming Tomorrow

(Video courtesy of YouTube/Us)

Do you fancy yourself an aficionado of obscure cameos by MMA fighters and personalities in movies and TV shows? Do you like cool MMA gear?

If you answered “YES” to either of the questions above, you may have a slim chance of winning a sweet prize package from our friends at Hayabusa valued at approximately $300.

Here’s the deal: Tomorrow we will post a video with a variety of obscure and not so obscure clips from various films and television programs featuring fighters, commentators and innovators from the sport of MMA. To enter, drop us an email at [email protected] with the name each movie and show and the MMA personality that appeared in it. Simple.

The clip above is an easy tune-up for you to get you ready for tomorrow, but be warned, some of the clips we’ve dug up are so random you might have to do a little detective work to identify who is in them. Seriously…we didn’t even know some of these movies existed and that some of these fighters even knew what a script was.

Remember to check back in tomorrow morning for the official video for the contest. The deadline will be Friday at 12:00 pm ET, so get your entry in early. One submission per reader and if no entrant is correct, we will choose the person with the “most correct” answers. If more than one entry is deemed a winner, all of the “winning” entries will be put into a random draw.

We will have prize details tomorrow, but let’s just say Hayabusa was very generous. If you’re a fan of their gear, make sure to vote for them at the Fighters Only World MMA Awards.

Good luck. Bragging rights and some cool prizes are at stake here, Potato Nation.

‘UFC Encyclopedia’ Fight-Picking Contest: The Winners!

UFC 136 poster Edgar Maynard Florian Aldo UFC Encyclopedia book cover Gerbasi

Last week’s fight-picking contest took in over 120 entries — or about six, when you filter out all the entries that predicted Edgar vs. Maynard and Sonnen vs. Stann would both go to decision, and that Jose Aldo would knock out Kenny Florian. Since none of that happened, it kind of made our jobs easier.

Of the commenters who picked all three winners correctly, first-place accolades go to commenter smackemyakem, who predicted that Edgar would finish Maynard by fourth-round TKO. Well done, buddy. Second place goes to Yuri4980 who also called a TKO win for Edgar, plus a decision victory for Aldo. Sabourcc and Cro Cop Glory Days round out the winners’ circle by being at least somewhat correct on the victory-method for one of their picks. Congrats guys, you’re all getting copies of UFC Encyclopedia by Thomas Gerbasi. E-mail [email protected] with your name and mailing address to claim your prize. Thanks to everybody who played!

Reminder: Strikeforce Challengers 19 Goes Down Tonight

(One of the above people has no clue that Strikeforce Challengers even exists.)

Depending on what kind of MMA fan you are, the Strikeforce Challengers series is either one of the many great ways to scout up and coming talent or one of the many open wounds that is bleeding Strikeforce to death. Regardless, Strikeforce Challengers 19 goes down tonight from the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas and features the likes of Ryan Couture, Jason “The Kansas City Bandit” High, and is headlined by a light heavyweight tilt between undefeated Lorenz “The Monsoon” Larkin and Nick “Leatherface” Rossborough. So if you determine whether or not to buy pay-per-views based on the originality of fighter’s nicknames, then this is the card for you.

Ryan Couture will be looking to erase the memory of his rather revealing loss to Matt Ricehouse back at Challengers 16, taking on 4-1 Wand Fight Team member Maka Watson. Since being ousted from the UFC following a unanimous decision loss to Charlie Brenneman, Jason High has gone on a five fight tear including a nasty technical submission via guillotine over Rudy “Bad News” Bears, and will be looking to continue his hot streak against Todd “Maniac” Moore, who most recently earned a unanimous decision victory over Mike Bronzoulis at Strikeforce: Overeem vs. Werdum.

Strikeforce Challengers 19 will be broadcast live (tape delayed on the west coast) on Showtime starting at 11 p.m.

Alexander Gustaffson vs Vladimir Matyushenko Booked Again, This Time for UFC 141

A compelling light heavyweight matchup between former IFL champion Vladimir “The Janitor” Matyushenko and rising star Alexander Gustaffson has just been booked for UFC 141. The match was originally intended to transpire at UFC 133 in Philadelphia, but Matyushenko pulled out due to a last minute injury. Matt Hamill took “The Janitor’s” place and was subsequently beat into retirement by the Swede, so it’s fair to say that Matyushenko has one of his toughest tests to date ahead of him. Well, other than that one guy, which I’m pretty sure was a fluke.

The match was originally intended to transpire at UFC 133 in Philadelphia, but Matyushenko was forced to pull out due to a last minute injury. Matt Hamill stepped in for “The Janitor” and was subsequently beat into retirement by the Gustaffson, so it’s fair to say that Matyushenko has one of his toughest tests to date ahead of him. Well, other than that one guy, which I’m pretty sure was a fluke.

Matyushenko is coming off his quickest and perhaps most impressive octagon appearance to date, a 20 second storming of Jason Brilz. “The Mauler” on the other hand has put together a three fight win streak since his first round submission loss to Phil Davis at UFC 112, but it was his destructive TKO of Hamill that opened a lot of eyes to he Swedish prospect. UFC 141 also features the epic number one contender match between Brock Lesnar and Alistair Overeem and a slightly less epic welterweight tilt between Jon Fitch and Johny Hendricks. So Potatoites (Potatoians?), how do you see this one going down?
