UFC 229 will have some of the best lightweight match-ups the division can offer.

The event goes down from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on Sat. October 6, 2018. It will be headlined by a lightweight championship bout between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor. The pair have some deeply personal issues that extend beyond a gold belt.

Also, the next challenger for the strap could very well be determined in the co-main event. Former interim UFC lightweight champion Tony Ferguson is set to make his return from injury. He will face former 155-pound champion Anthony “Showtime” Pettis.

Ferguson has been a dominant force in the UFC lightweight division. So much so, in fact, that on several occasions he has been booked to face Nurmagomedov. Unfortunately, injuries to both parties have forced that fight to be canceled several times.

“The Eagle” would love to get a shot at testing himself against “El Caucus.” In an interview with Brian Vega, Nurmagomedov offered his thoughts on Ferguson vs. Pettis.

Nurmagomedov said that he hopes Ferguson wins the fight. Should he emerge victorious against McGregor it’d again set up a meeting between he and Ferguson. Despite this, Nurmagomedov feels Pettis might be a bad stylistic match-up for Ferguson (via Bloody Elbow):

“I hope he going to win,” Nurmagomedov said. “But my opinion, this fight is stylistically little bit bad matchup for Tony Ferguson. I don’t know how he feel after he is injured.

“He is [34] years old. He come back after injury. If he wins, it’s going to be big fight next year. One more biggest fight in UFC history. Let’s go.”

Although it was widely thought to be a foregone conclusion, Michael Chiesa made it official when it was announced he had filed a civil lawsuit against Conor McGregor in New York Court.

The lawsuit came about, of course, due to McGregor’s highly publicized April attack where he rushed the Barclays Center in Brooklyn with a horde of goons to gain retribution on Khabib Nurmagomedov for shaking down his isolated friend Artem Lobov at the fighter hotel the week of UFC 223.

‘The Notorious’ threw a metal dolly, among other inanimate objects, through a bus containing Khabib and other fighters on the card, injuring Chiesa, Ray Borg, and others while forcing three total fights off that weekend’s UFC 223 (including Lobov’s bout against Alex Caceres).

Chiesa was shown suffering what appeared to be minor facial lacerations on the now-worn video of the incident, which is being used to promote McGregor’s upcoming fight with Nurmagomedov at October 6’s UFC 229 from Las Vegas. McGregor was arrested on assault charges and jailed in New York.

The former UFC champion posted bail, and ultimately entered a plea deal in July to avoid serious punishment. That’s left him free to fight, but it’s also made his civil suit with Chiesa an open-and-shut case according to a New York-based lawyer.

Dmitriy Shakhnevich, a criminal defense and personal injury lawyer who’s been commenting on each step of the entire ordeal, recently told MMA Fighting that Chiesa definitely has a “legitimate” case, so much so that McGregor has no way to defend himself because he plead guilty in a criminal court:

“There’s definitely a legitimate case. In fact, because [McGregor] plead guilty in the criminal case. And in criminal cases the standard is higher — it’s beyond a reasonable doubt. It’s not a preponderance of the evidence. Because he did that, it’s virtually a defenseless case. You can’t defend this case, there’s no way to defend it. Even if he didn’t plead guilty, there’s 450 videos showing this. There’s really no substantive defense.”

Shakhnevich predicted that Chiesa will settle with McGregor and Barclays Center, whom he also named in the suit, and it should happen rather easily:

“There’s no other way,” the lawyer said. “Because there’s no defense. There’s no way Conor can defend his case — he plead guilty. He allocated in open court what he did wrong. There’s no defense that’s admissible in this case.”

The attorney noted that the dollar amount of Chiesa’s supposed settlement wouldn’t be all that high because no serious injuries were involved. Chiesa’s legal representative Joseph W. Murray declined to name a figure in the suit, and Shakhnevich said that was a good tactic. He believed Chiesa could get somewhere in the “low six-figure” range, even though that was a stretch.

They do have the leverage to draw out the proceedings during a time when McGregor is obviously busy, however, so with the UFC megastar set to make a massive windfall against Khabib, settling will be the only path to go:

“What they can do in this case is they can really put Conor through the ringer,” Shakhnevich said. “They can make him sit for a deposition, they could tape the deposition. It could make him really uncomfortable. He doesn’t need that. He has money, he has fame, he has everything. He’s not gonna want to be dragged through the mud. He’s gonna pay whatever he has to pay. Whatever he pays will pale in comparison to what he makes in a couple of weeks. There’s really no reason for him to defend this case.”

Chiesa may be taking criticism online for his decision to sue, but Shakhnevich said he was in his rights to do so and was even smart to pursue the case due to the volatile nature of professional MMA:

“It’s tough to forego this possibility,” the attorney said. “The justice system is designed for this and he has a great case on the merits. There’s no downside. So, it’s tough to blame him. To get that much money in his pocket for a guy — you never know, he could lose his next fight and be cut and that’s it. It’s that kind of business. So, you can’t really judge him. I don’t. I’d encourage him to do the same thing and I’d encourage everybody else in that bus to do the same thing.”

Gilbert Melendez’s decorated MMA career could be coming to an end.

News broke today that Melendez is reportedly in talks to end his lengthy layoff to face Arnold Allen at December’s UFC 232 according to an anonymous source who confirmed the talks to MMAjunkie.com. The fight was first reported by FloCombat.

Melendez recently confirmed that he was ending a yearlong hiatus since a brutal beating at the hands of feared knockout artist Jeremy Stephens. The bout was contested at featherweight, Melendez’ first bout at 145 pounds since 2003.

The former Strikeforce lightweight champion and UFC title challenger was once one of the top 155-pound fighters in the world. He won the Strikeforce lightweight title twice and defended it five times in total to storm into the UFC in 2013. He met then-champ Benson Henderson for the title and lost a close split decision. ‘El Nino’ then won a brutal, bloody war with Diego Sanchez at UFC 166 to earn a second UFC title shot at UFC 181 in December 2014.

Melendez was submitted by former champ Anthony Pettis and went on to lose three straight fights to Stephens, Edson Barboza, and Eddie Alvarez to put his overall UFC record at a disappointing 1-5.

He was also suspended for a positive drug test and has been dealing with a significant leg injury where bruises calcified and resulted in nerve damage. But in an interview with MMAjunkie this week, he said he’s doing better:

“As a fighter, recovery takes a bit longer, and mileage is a little bit more, so with all that added up, I took some time,” Melendez said on Wednesday. “But I’m feeling great. My leg is better. I’m checking kicks right now, and I feel good about it.”

With the losses mounting to the best fighters in the world, ‘El Nino’ admitted he needs to win his next fight and win big.

If he did, he claimed his career may continue, but a loss or poor performance would result in him re-examining his path:

“I think it’s important for me to succeed in my next fight,” Melendez said. “It will be hard to go on if I don’t succeed. I really have to deliver. Even if I did come out with a victory, and I’m not happy with my performance, I’d probably have to consider everything.

“I need to succeed in this fight. If I do, that journey may continue. But if I don’t succeed, I can’t say forever-ever, but it’s definitely going to be time to step back for a long time.”

If he does battle Allen, he’ll have no easy task. The 24-year-old featherweight was last seen submitting Mads Burnell at May’s UFC Liverpool. He boasts four wins in a row in the UFC and an overall MMA record of 13-1.

Will Melendez continue his storied career past UFC 232?

Kevin Lee: Tony Ferguson Stole My Anthony Pettis Fight

Would you rather see a Kevin Lee vs. Tony Ferguson rematch?

Kevin Lee is ready to get back into the Octagon.

“The Motown Phenom” suffered his first loss in nearly two years against Tony Ferguson in October. He bounced back with a dominant victory over Edson Barboza that resulted in a doctor stoppage in the fifth round.

That bout took place in April, and five months later, Lee is ready to fight again. Initially he’d have liked to rematch Ferguson, who is returning from a torn ACL. Instead UFC decided to pair up “El Cucuy” with former lightweight champion Anthony Pettis. Ferguson and Pettis will collide at UFC 229 in October.

Speaking to Submission Radio recently, Lee said that Tony Ferguson stole his fight with “Showtime”:

I guess I kind of got it. They were looking for a fight for Tony and he stole my fight from me. Like, that’s what it’s going to boil down to. So, me and him, you know, we already got some bones to pick, that’s going to be another added on top of the list.

“I thought that would have been the right fight to make, even if they didn’t put it on that 229 card. I know they were looking for a headliner for that Milwaukee card. What better headliner than me versus Anthony Pettis on that one? But we’re gonna have to see how this whole thing shakes up now.

“I think Tony was the x-factor in that. I think when I talked to them first they were of the mind that he wasn’t gonna be ready, just like everybody else, but I guess he’s gonna go ahead and rush his recovery in order to stop my shine. So what can I say.”

There are a few options out there for Lee now. A potential fight with Justin Gaethje is on Lee’s radar. He has also acknowledged that Al Iaquinta is a possibility as well. If it were up to Lee, however, he’d rather share the Octagon with the former World Series Of Fighting (WSOF) lightweight champ.
