UFC Fight Night 95 (also called UFC Brasilia) went down from Ginasio Nilson Nelson in Brasilia, Brazil tonight (September 24, 2016). Headlined by Cristiane ‘Cyborg” Justino’s second bout in the UFC, the event featured a plethora or Brazilian talent.

The main event went down according to the script. Justino’s opponent, UFC newcomer Lina Lansberg, lasted longer than many expected, making it to the second round. But she had to withstand a hellacious beating to do so. Lansberg could mount no meaningful offense, and spent the entire fight in survival mode before the referee finally intervened.

The co-feature saw former bantamweight champion Renan Barao get back on the winning track in his second fight at 145 pounds. He battled former Ultimate Fighter finalist Phillipe Nover, taking a unanimous decision after three relatively uneventful rounds.

And finally, the third from the top billing saw the heavyweight slugfest with the outcome most expected. Roy ‘Big Country’ Nelson and Antonio ‘Bigfoot’ Silva duked it out for the better part of two rounds before Nelson found the chin of his Brazilian counterpart and then finished it on the ground. Most of the chatter about the fight centered on what happened next.

Upset that referee ‘Big’ John McCarthy had not stopped the fight sooner, Nelson made his displeasure felt. After walking away in frustration at being forced to hit his friend Silva more than he felt necessary, Nelson came back and kicked McCarthy in the butt as the latter tended to the prone Brazilian.

Two seasoned heavyweights in need of a win met inside the Octagon at UFC Fight Night 95. Roy Nelson (22-13) did battle with Antonio Silva (19-10-1). “Big Country” was on the losing end of four of his last five bouts. Meanwhile, “Bigfoot” had a record of 1-5-1 in his last seven fights.

Ouch.

Luckily for “Big Country” he turned his fortunes around a bit, although he had some gripes at the end of his victory.

Nelson threw a leg kick and ducked under a hook. Nelson parried a body kick attempt and missed a right hand over the top. Silva went high with a kick that was blocked. “Bigfoot” ate a right hand. “Big Country” stepped in and connected with a body kick. Nelson pressed his opponent against the fence. The two separated and the round ended shortly after.

The start of the second round saw both men throwing leather. Silva went for a kick, but got clipped with a right hand. Silva kicked Nelson below the belt and time called. When the fight resumed, “Bigfoot” went for a takedown, but it was thwarted. Nelson went for a left hook, uppercut combination but he couldn’t find the mark. Silva was tagged with a right hand. “Bigfoot” was dropped with an uppercut and he landed some more punches to finish the fight.

Post-fight, Nelson went over to referee “Big” John McCarthy and did a little shove with his foot. He looked none too pleased with McCarthy’s officiating. He told Jon Anik there was no sense in having to punch Silva as many times as he did and the fight should’ve been stopped sooner.

Final Result: Roy Nelson def. Antonio Silva via TKO (Punches) –  R2, 4:10

UFC heavyweight contender Antonio ‘Bigfoot’ Silva had a pretty rough night at UFC Rotterdam this past Sunday (May 8, 2016). He faced fellow heavyweight giant Stefan Struve in the evening’s co-main event, in what proved to be a very quick and brutal fight for the Brazilian. After rushing in on the initial exchanges, Silva got caught with a nice two-piece combo before eating a knee to the chin that appeared to take his legs out from under him. As the fight went to the ground, Silva’s head was left exposed as he looked to take Struve down, and ‘The Skyscraper’ rained down elbows in the style of Travis Browne to get the stoppage.

Silva instantly appealed the KO loss, which officially came in at 16 seconds in the first round, but the referee’s stoppage was now in the books. Struve celebrated the victory, erasing the memory of his frustrating decision loss to Jared Rosholt at UFC 193 last November, but it was disappointing at best for the fallen Brazilian Bigfoot.

A tough loss to swallow, and the second of the sort in a row for Silva, as he drops to five KO losses in the last seven outings. There was a lot of talk about possible retirement for Bigfoot among fans, but the giant Brazilian heavyweight who holds wins over Alistair Overeem, Fedor Emelianenko and many other big names wasn’t making any announcements regarding the subject of his future.

But there’s been something else going on behind the scenes featuring Silva’s following in his native Brazil. It looks as though many of his home country’s fans have begun to turn tides on the well travelled MMA veteran, and it has infuriated Silva to the point he’s gone on a wild rant over social media.

Alistair Overeem Is the Karate Kid, and Other Highlights From ‘Fight Night 87?

(via UFC on FOX)

We’ve seen many different versions of Alistair Overeem over the years — Skinnyreem (aka PRIDE-era Reem), Demolition Man Reem (aka K1-era Reem), and of course Ubereem (aka Arianny be mirin Reem), but thanks to a few humbling losses and a USADA-backed drug-testing program, we’ve seen a newer, arguably better Overeem emerge in recent years. One who relied less on overwhelming power and arrogance to carry him to victory and more on dynamic and patiently-implemented offense. A “Newbereem” if you will.

At Fight Night 89 on Sunday, Newbereem unveiled what may very well be his final form — a trimmed-down, 248-pound version of the goliath we once knew with a positively Super Saiyan-esque haircut — and the results were nothing short of spectacular. Facing off against Jackson-Wink teammate and former Heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski, Overeem looked calm under pressure, fierce when on the offensive, and finished the fight with arguably the most impressive sequence of his UFC career. He frickin’ crane kicked Arlovski in the face is what he did, then followed it up with some hellacious ground and pound to put away the “Pit Bull” in what may very well end up being a performance that earns him a title shot.

Ubereem is dead. All hail Newbereem.

More highlights/results from Fight Night 87 after the jump.

In Fight Night 87′s co-main event, Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva also debuted his newest form — let’s call him “Hipsterfoot” — but aside from a new haircut, there was sadly nothing new about him. Against the 7 foot Stefan Struve, Silva was rocked, dropped, and finished off with a series of elbows from the clinch in less than 15 seconds, bringing his momentous 1-fight winning streak to a grinding halt in the process. Bigfoot may still have the heart to be a professional fighter, but like Chuck Liddell before him, it simply seems that he no longer has the chin for it. His loss to Struve now bring his record to 1-5-1 in his past 7 fights, with *all* of those losses coming by way of TKO. Honestly, it’s a wonder how the guy makes it through a training camp in one piece.

In perhaps the most surprising performance of the evening, Gunnar Nelson managed to both outhustle Albert Tumenov on the feet and dominate him on the mat en route to a second round submission.

A 2-to-1 underdog coming into the fight, many predicted that Nelson wouldn’t be able to take the fight to the mat and would suffer the consequences of Tumenov’s ridiculous striking pedigree as a result, but as he did against Brandon Thatch, Nelson proved to be quite the dynamic striker himself. He got hands on Tumenov early and often, then proceeded to take the previously untested (on the mat at least) prospect down at will, breaking his spirit and eventually securing a fight-ending neck crank. It was arguably the biggest win of Nelson’s career to date, and somewhat ironically, served as a testament to just how good a grappler Demian Maia is.
