The UFC heads to Nashville, Tennessee, with a decent Fight Night offering on Fox Sports 1 this Saturday, April 22. In the main event, longtime featherweight contender Cub Swanson draws Conor McGregor’s friend and training partner Artem Lobov in a bizarre but potentially entertaining main event.

That main event sums up a card mostly devoid of relevance to larger storylines or even to the title picture in any division, but it’s full of fun matchups.

The co-main event features a lightweight scrap between Al Iaquinta and the legendary Diego Sanchez, a fight that promises fireworks. Action fighter Joe Lauzon draws Scotland’s Stevie Ray in a fun bout, while Jake Ellenberger and Mike Perry will likely fight until one man is unconscious in the main-card opener.

The best fight on the card is a bantamweight matchup between John Dodson and Eddie Wineland, a fantastic meeting of two grizzled and talented veterans.

The prelims aren’t must-watch, but keep an eye on the flyweight bout between Brandon Moreno and Dustin Ortiz.

Let’s take a look at each matchup.

Cub Swanson: Artem Lobov Doesn’t Deserve To Be In UFC

The always-entertaining Cub Swanson is headed for a bit of a strange turn in his career when he faces off with 2-2 UFC competitor Artem Lobov, a fighter who’s most known for his friendship with lightweight champ Conor McGregor, in the main event of Saturday’s (April 22, 2017) UFC Fight Night 108 from the Bridgestone Arena

The always-entertaining Cub Swanson is headed for a bit of a strange turn in his career when he faces off with 2-2 UFC competitor Artem Lobov, a fighter who’s most known for his friendship with lightweight champ Conor McGregor, in the main event of Saturday’s (April 22, 2017) UFC Fight Night 108 from the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee.

Swanson staked his claim towards a title shot when he defeated rising sensation Doo Ho Choi on the main card of December 2016’s UFC 206 in an all-out classic that was many fans and media members’ pick for “Fight of the Year.” It was also his third consecutive win after he hit a rough patch with consecutive losses to the absolute best of the 145-pound talent pool in Max Holloway and Frankie Edgar in 2014-2015.

But when a Twitter showdown unexpectedly erupted between “The Russian Hammer” and him, Swanson decided he had to teach McGregor’s friend a lesson. Appearing on this week’s “The MMA Hour,” he told Ariel Helwani that talent-wise, Lobov does not even deserve to have a roster spot:

“I don’t believe that talent-wise he shouldn’t be in the UFC,” he said. “I feel like with his record and things like that there are so many more deserving people to be in the UFC. So somebody in that situation, if it wouldn’t have been for Conor, he would have had to stream together a lot more wins and do a lot more things. So I think people are pissed off about that. I particularly don’t like him for that.

“When you treat your career early on really crappy, you can’t expect to be in a good position. That’s just the way pro fighting is. So, I mean, I don’t think it’s a lack of skill set. I just think it was a lack of taking care of his record and doing all the things at the right time.”

A longtime veteran of the WEC and UFC with 31 professional bouts to his name, Swanson opened up on why he doesn’t find Lobov at all genuine after he spewed some what he deemed outlandish trash talk online:

“Because he’s trying to be somebody, like a lot of these young guys are trying to be somebody that they’re not,” he said. “And he’s trying to talk crap. You know, he called me a b*tch and he said I had no balls. I feel like those two things aren’t true statements. If feel like if you’re going to call me out on something, call me out on something that’s true, but those aren’t true. To me it’s just ridiculous, and I’d like to make an example out of him.”

Jose Aldo was infamously knocked out by Conor McGregor in just 13 seconds at Dec. 2015’s UFC 194, surrendering his long held featherweight belt in the process. Aldo was then able to reclaim gold at UFC 200 last July when he scored a decision victory over Frankie Edgar to become the interim 145-pound champion.

Aldo hasn’t competed since, but he was promoted back to undisputed titleholder when the UFC stripped McGregor of his title late last year.

The choice to accept the belt seemed like a logical one, but Artem Lobov, a teammate of McGregor’s, recently called “Scarface” a ‘p*ssy’ for doing so:

“I’ll tell you one thing about Jose Aldo, if I was in his position I would have never accepted that belt,” said Lobov in a recent interview with Submission Radio. “What? So they took the belt from the guy that knocked him out in 13 seconds. They took it off that guy and they handed him that belt and he just takes it and he’s happy and smiling on his face.”

“Like, what kind of pussy do you have to be to take that? No way in hell would I ever accept that belt,” added Lobov. “I would say, ‘give me that guy again. I want to fight him, and if he’s not in the division anymore, well then f—k that, I don’t want that belt. Let the other two fight for the belt and then I’ll fight the winner and I’ll earn that belt’. Because now he’s holding a belt that Conor got off him in 13 seconds and he’ll never be able to get rid of that stain.”

Aldo will next defend his title against current interim champion Max Holloway in the main event of UFC 212 on June 3, 2017 in Rio, but Lobov doesn’t even feel as if a win over Holloway would justify Aldo’s position atop the 145-pound weight class:

“Even if he beats now Max Holloway, he’ll still be holding that same belt. So how are you as a man, as a fighter that respects himself, accept that belt? I would have never done it in my life. I don’t know why he f—king done it.”

Do you agree with Lobov’s comments?
