When Frankie Edgar beat B.J. Penn in April to win the UFC lightweight title, many fans thought it was a fluke. But Edgar did it again on Saturday at UFC 118, winning another unanimous decision and showing without a doubt that he’s the best lightweight in mixed martial arts.
This time around it wasn’t even close, with Edgar winning all five rounds on all three judges’ cards.
“I want to thank B.J.,” Edgar said afterward. “He brought the best out of me.”.
Frankie Edgar might as well had walked out to the Octagon last night with a Rodney Dangerfield bit playing, as despite being the UFC Lightweight Champion, it wasn’t like the guy was receiving a ton of respect heading into his rematch with BJ Penn. Frankie Edgar might as well had walked out to the Octagon last night with a Rodney Dangerfield bit playing, as despite being the UFC Lightweight Champion, it wasn’t like the guy was receiving a ton of respect heading into his rematch with BJ Penn. Of course, Penn has long been widely regarded as the world’s best lightweight, as well as one of the sport’s best P4P fighters, so something must have been wrong with him in their first meeting right? Wrong.
Now it wasn’t like Edgar beat the holy living hell out of Penn last night in Boston, but it was a pretty damn convincing win, as the Jersey fighter once again outscored the Hawaiian on his feet and threw in a couple of takedowns for good measure. Speaking afterwards at the post-fight presser, Dana White took the opportunity to heap praise on the promotion’s lightweight champ, saying (thanks to MMA Bay for the quote):
“This kid just beat the s— out of BJ Penn for five rounds. Dominated him in every facet of the fight: on the ground, on top, on bottom, stand-up, everything. The kid’s got a heart as big as this room. He comes from wrestling, but his boxing is unbelievable, his jiu-jitsu was great tonight, his wrestling was sick. He picked BJ up and power slammed him. I guarantee you BJ Penn is banged up right now.”
You don’t have to sell this on us Dana; Frankie’s got our complete and total respect. Now it just remains to be seen whether or not Joe and Jane ’UFC’s kind of cool’ embrace the new champ, or get pumped for his first bout with Gray Maynard.

With one new champ defending his title against the man he took it from, and one boxing great crossing over into a brand new sport that he seems to only barely understand, you’d think there would be a vast difference in the odds on the two co-main event bouts. In reality, the two lines are more similar than you might think, and they favor neither the champ nor the big-mouthed boxer.
Let’s break it down below and see who the smart choices are at UFC 118.

If you’ve heard MMA legend and former UFC champ Pat Miletich‘s contributions to the Strikeforce: Challengers broadcasts or his analysis on ESPN’s “MMA Live,” then it won’t surprise you to know that Miletich had a lot of really insightful things to say when I called him to play Fighter vs. Writer for UFC 118.
So insightful, in fact, that it immediately made me wonder why I was dumb enough to choose Miletich to go up against, when I’m a dismal 1-4 in this series so far.
So the bad news is that I’m up against a superior MMA mind this week. The good news is that I got to hear Miletich break down the upcoming card, which includes one fight where “The Croatian Sensation” says there’s an epic beating in store for one of the interested parties. Can you guess who?
Yeah, you probably can. But you should still read all about how both Miletich and I see the main card playing out on Saturday night.

The UFC 118 weigh-ins take place Friday at the TD Garden in Boston, and if you can’t be there in person, you can watch the video live right here at MMAFighting.com.
The most intriguing issue will be the weight of James Toney, who has been as light as 157 pounds and as heavy as 237 pounds in his boxing career. Toney says he’s working hard and in great shape, but at times Toney has become grotesquely overweight. We’ll find out on Friday afternoon whether he got himself into decent shape for his UFC debut against Randy Couture.
In the main event, lightweight champion Frankie Edgar and challenger B.J. Penn will both have to make the limit of 155 pounds.
The weigh-in starts at 4 PM ET (replay will be available in the evening) and the video is below.
If you were hoping for one final bit of drama just one day prior to UFC 118, alas, the weigh-ins this afternoon provided none of it. James Toney, who came in at 237lbs., had little to say to opponent Randy Couture or the Boston crowd, many of whom don’t evidently care for the boxing champ […]
If you were hoping for one final bit of drama just one day prior to UFC 118, alas, the weigh-ins this afternoon provided none of it. James Toney, who came in at 237lbs., had little to say to opponent Randy Couture or the Boston crowd, many of whom don’t evidently care for the boxing champ (“The Natural” came in at 220).
As far as main event competitors, lightweight champion Frankie Edgar and BJ Penn, they both weighed in at 154 for their rematch. Really, aside from a couple of rather stern looking stare downs, the only interesting bit today was Gabe Ruediger giving Joe Lauzon a cake with “Sorry About Your Loss” written on it. Yes, Gabe made weight, and no, he didn’t eat any of the cake.
Here are the official weigh-in results:
Frankie Edgar (154) vs. BJ Penn (154), James Toney (237) vs. Randy Couture (220), Gray Maynard (156) vs. Kenny Florian (156), Marcus Davis (170) vs. Nate Diaz (171), Mario Miranda (185) vs. Demian Maia (184), Joe Lauzon (156) vs. Gabe Ruediger (155), Andre Winner (154) vs. Nik Lentz (155), Dan Miller (185) vs. Jon Salter (185), Nick Osipczak (171) vs. Greg Soto (170), Amilcar Alves (171) vs. Mike Pierce (171).
