Bellator is set to stage their biggest show ever in this weekend’s (Sat., June 24, 2017) Bellator 24 from Madison Square Garden in New York, NY featuring a stacked card with the best the promotion can offer from top to bottom.

The event will be headlined by longtime rivals and MMA legends Chael Sonnen and Wanderlei Silva, whose beef goes back many years now. The two were supposed to meet at UFC 175 in 2014 following a run as opposing coaches on The Ultimate Fighter (TUF), but serious drug testing issues from both fighters out an abrupt and disappointing halt to the contest.

Three years later, neither has done much nor won a MMA bout, but their running spat will finally be put to rest. The brash personalities were in attendance at today’s Bellator 180 presser from NYC, where things expectedly got testy during the staredown, with Silva shoving Sonnen and several members of the security detail stepping in. We are now just days away from Bellator’s second attempt at pay-per-view (PPV), as Bellator: NYC is set to take place this Saturday (June 24, 2017) from the famed Madison Square Garden in New York City. The event will be headlined by a grudge match years in the making, as veterans Chael Sonnen and Wanderlei Silva are gearing up to do battle.

The two have been scheduled to fight numerous times over the years, but the bout never came to fruition. In fact, some were worried that it would fall through this time too after Silva missed two pre-fight press conferences. “The Axe Murderer”, however, said he missed those press conferences because he wasn’t confident that he’d be able to control himself around Sonnen.

After all, the Brazilian recently admitted that he’s never had a rival quite like “The American Gangster”:

“I’ve never had an opponent like this, and I don’t like it,” Silva told MMAjunkie Radio. “I had some bad guys like (Ricardo) Arona, but (Sonnen is) many times more. I need to concentrate and be ready to make the fight what I want to do.”

“For sure I’m going to hurt him, a lot,” Silva said. “I want to feel his blood on the ground.”

Silva hasn’t competed in over four years, as his last appearance came against Brian Stann at UFC on Fuel TV 8 back in March 2013. He seems to be motivated heading into his bout with Sonnen, however, and he claimed that his ‘technique is back’:

“It’s been a long time since my last fight,” he said. “Now, finally, my technique is back. Everything is right, and I’m really happy. I’m so happy to get back to work.”

While Silva is known more for his aggressive striking and for his background in Muay Thai, Sonnen is known more for his wrestling and for his powerful takedowns. Silva is well aware of this, and he says that he’ll be ready for it on fight night:

“I trained a lot of knees, because I know what he wants to do,” Silva said. “He has just one movement, and in that moment, I’m going to catch him.”

Who do you expect to come out on top in the main event of Bellator: NYC?

Wanderlei Silva Explains Why He Missed Bellator: NYC Press Conference

On June 24, 2017, Chael Sonnen and Wanderlei Silva are finally scheduled to clash in the main event of Bellator: NYC live on pay-per-view (PPV) from Madison Square Garden in New York City. On June 24, 2017, Chael Sonnen and Wanderlei Silva are finally scheduled to clash in the main event of Bellator: NYC live on pay-per-view (PPV) from Madison Square Garden in New York City. Silva, however, has missed two pre-fight press conferences, leading some to wonder if he’ll actually show up on fight night.

Originally, Bellator executives said that Silva had missed the most recent press conference because he was ill, but “The Axe Murderer” recently gave his own explanation:

“The truth is, I didn’t go to the press conference because I didn’t want to do what (Cristiane) ‘Cyborg’ (Justino) did with that girl that talked (expletive) to her,” Silva told MMAjunkie.

The situation Silva is referring to occurred at the UFC’s recent Athlete Retreat in Las Vegas, where Cyborg essentially punched Magana in the face after claiming that Magana had been bashing her over social media.

Sonnen is without question Silva’s most bitter rival, as their feud dates back years, and it appears as if “The Axe Murderer” wasn’t convinced that he’d be able to control himself around the outspoken “American Gangster”:

“When I see Chael, I don’t know what’s going to happen,” Silva said. “I’m professional, but the guy has crossed the line with me and played with the wrong guy.”

Silva and Sonnen have been booked to face each other before, but the bout has never come to fruition. If all goes to plan, however, the two will finally meet and headline what is undoubtedly set to be the biggest card in Bellator history.

Aside from the main event, Scott Coker and Co. have stacked the deck for Bellator: NYC, as the co-main event will feature a bout between Fedor Emelianenko, a man many consider to be the very best heavyweight of all-time, and Matt Mitrione, a former UFC contender.

Welterweight champion Douglas Lima will welcome Lorenz Larkin to Bellator in a 170-pound title fight as well, while lightweight titleholder Michael Chandler will take on Brent Primus. In addition, highly touted prospect Aaron Pico will make his professional debut against Zach Freeman.
