Shortly after making the decision to pack up and leave his longtime home in the UFC in favor of Bellator mixed martial arts (MMA), former UFC 170-pound title challenger Rory MacDonald was introduced to the public for the first time as a Bellator MMA competitor and he wasted no time to take a few jabs at his former employers.

During the press event the 27-year-old welterweight stud, courtesy of MMA Fighting, stated that Bellator’s production of their shows was a key factor in his decision to sign with them:

“The production of the show, it just stands out right away,” MacDonald said. “The big screens, the entrances. They do it bigger. They do it right here. It’s a fight show here.

They want to promote a fighter, they want to build it. It’s not generic where everyone is wearing the same thing. We get to be our own individual self, promote ourselves.

Where I was before, everyone is wearing the same uniforms now, we’re all walking out of the same, boring dressing room or the gate. It’s boring. People are tired of that.”

057_Robbie_Lawler_vs_Rory_MacDonald.0.0[1]‘The Red King’ says that negotiations with Bellator and the UFC have been ongoing for quite sometime now, however, now that he is with Bellator he is ready to takeover the sport with his new promotion:

“It’s been a long time in the making,” MacDonald said. “I’ve had a lot to consider probably over a year. We’ve been in talks with Bellator for a long time now. It’s gone back and forth with the UFC. We’ve put a great deal together.

We’re gonna build a great business together. Bellator believes in me; I believe in the company. We’re gonna take it to the next level. We’re gonna take over.

We’re gonna take Bellator into Canada and we’re gonna do it big,” MacDonald said. “We’re gonna reinvigorate that market. Those fans are gonna get a proper fight show again.

The tide is turning,” he said. “For me, that title fight against Robbie was an eye-opener. It was like, OK we got to the show where you wanted to go, it didn’t work out, but now it’s time to start making some money.”

MacDonald also took aim at the UFC’s recent partnership with Reebok for their fighter’s exclusive apparel, something the young Canadian says made him feel like a ‘robot’ looking the same as his fellow combatants:

“You walk into that cage like every single other person out there on the roster,” MacDonald said. “You’re basically like a robot walking into the cage with the same jersey on, there’s no difference between this guy and that guy.

It’s boring, I find it. It’s very plain. I understand where they’re trying to go with it, but that’s just not fight sport.

There’s no personality there.”

Bellator Makes Rory MacDonald Signing Official, Fighter Out For Rest Of 2016

Rory MacDonald Scott Coker

Rory MacDonald is officially a member of the Bellator MMA welterweight division.

We just won’t be seeing the “Red King” anytime soon.

MacDonald and Bellator made the signing official Friday night during Bellator 160 on Spike TV. The former UFC title contender, though, suffered a broken nose during his loss to Stephen Thompson and will be sidelined until 2017.

Below is the complete press release from Bellator:

Bellator MMA is elated to formally announce the signing of mixed martial arts superstar Rory MacDonald to an exclusive, multi-year, multi-fight contract with the Scott Coker-led promotion, making “Red King” the latest in a long line of blockbuster acquisitions for Bellator MMA.

The former No. 1 contender to the UFC welterweight crown is undoubtedly one of the premiere free agent signings in the history of the promotion. The “Red King” has totaled nine career victories under the UFC banner, including wins over current welterweight champion Tyron Woodley, in addition to B.J. Penn and Nate Diaz.

“There’s no denying that Rory MacDonald was the cream of the crop when it comes to free agents in MMA,” Bellator President Scott Coker said. “As I say all the time, if there is a free agent out there, we’re going to talk to them, if they fit our model we’re going to make a hard push to bring them over here. I’m very happy that we were able to work out a deal with Rory, and I can’t wait to see him bring his menacing style to the Bellator cage.”

MacDonald is clearly the most popular active Canadian mixed martial artist since the former UFC welterweight Champion and teammate Georges St. Pierre, whom MacDonald has trained under for years at the world renowned TriStar Gym in Montreal.

“There are multiple reasons why I choose to fight for Bellator MMA and Scott Coker,” Rory MacDonald said. “One, they have given me the opportunity to develop and grow a business together. Two, because I already feel respected by the promotion as a professional athlete. And last but not least, because Bellator is offering a setup that no-one in the world can offer me.”

At only 27-years-old, MacDonald joins the fray with an impressive professional record of 18-4 and enters a stacked welterweight division of fighters already signed with Bellator, that currently has a world-class champion in Andrey Koreshkov.

With a court appeal recently shortening his California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) suspension from a jaw-dropping three years to only one, former Bellator middleweight champion Alexander Shlemenko will be returning to the cage soon.

News arrived from ESPN’s Brett Okamoto that Shlemenko will face former title contender Kendall Grove at Bellator 162 on October 21 from the FedEx Forum in Memphis, Tennessee. The former 185-pound champ has been out of action since Bellator 133 in February 2015, where he knocked out Melvin Manhoef with a highlight reel spinning backfist.

After the fight, Shlemenko was found to have testosterone to epitestosterone levels as high as 50:1 that of a normal man, and was issued a suspension by the CSAC. When that suspension ended up being for the aforementioned three years, Shlemenko appealed on a variety of tenants, one being that he did not receive a B-sample test that night. But the one that ultimately got his suspension reduced from three years to one was an appeal to the California Superior Court, who reduced the ban last month on the basis of an original letter from the CSAC stating Shlemenko was only suspended for a year.

That didn’t stop him from fighting in his native Russia in the meantime, however, as Shlemenko fought and beat Vyacheslav Vasilevsky twice this year. Prior to his win over Manhoef in Bellator, Shlemenko had lost two straight by submission to Tito Ortiz and Brandon Halsey, snapping an impressive 13-fight win streak where he defended the Bellator belt three times.

He’ll square off with Grove, the former UFC mainstay who has won two straight fights after also losing to Halsey at Bellator 137. Former WWE champ Bobby Lashley is also set to face a yet-to-be-named opponent at the Tennessee-based card.
