Fresh off arguably the most memorable knockout in UFC history, Jorge Masvidal revealed why he decided to go for a flying knee on Ben Askren at UFC 239 this past weekend.

The welterweight bout lasted just five seconds as Masvidal knocked Askren out cold and delivered the former ONE and Bellator star’s first-ever defeat. Later, footage showed that Masvidal had actually been drilling the technique before the event and it was planned all along.

So why did Masvidal decide to start the fight that way? “Gamebred” explained how it was down to his interactions with Askren:

“Yeah, I remember [when I decided to start the fight with a flying knee],” Masvidal said on Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show on Monday. “You want the whole thing on how I knew for a fact this guy couldn’t stop it? A little bit of psychology.

But listen, the way that he acted just in real life when I get him on the fly. What I mean by fly is he’s walking, I’m walking, I just pop up on him. The way I habitually popped up on him and made him just freeze up, I knew he couldn’t handle improvisation. …He can’t handle that sh*t man. He can’t handle changes. I hit him with a nice little change.

Masvidal Says Askren Can’t Adapt And Survive

Masvidal still doesn’t like Askren, and leading up to the event, regularly spoke of how he wished to beat him up for 14 minutes before delivering the final blow. However, after their interactions, Masvidal knew Askren wouldn’t be able to adapt to what was eventually a fight-ending flying knee:

“Nah, it wasn’t like that,” Masvidal said when asked if he planned the knee the moment the fight was announced. “Once it got announced, I was like ‘I’m going to beat this guy’s a*s for 14 minutes.’ Then I decided, you know what? I’m just going to check him right off the gate and see where he’s at.

Then when I came in and saw him in the flesh, and I saw how weak he is actually…on the fly, he can’t do anything, he can’t talk to anybody. Especially when it’s just me and him. So, to have those types of characteristics, you’re a person who can’t adapt and survive, [and] he showed it.”

What do you think of Masvidal’s comments?

Despite being on the receiving end of the fastest knockout in UFC history, Ben Askren isn’t letting his UFC 239 defeat to Jorge Masvidal faze him.

“Funky” was knocked out via a flying knee from “Gamebred” rushing in on a takedown attempt. The finish garnered a ridiculous amount of reaction from the mixed martial arts (MMA) community online. Many began to speculate whether or not Askren would decide to continue fighting after the grizzly loss.

However, speaking on “The Ariel Helwani MMA Show” earlier today (Mon. July 8, 2019), Askren admitted that he plans to continue fighting despite the defeat, but admits he’s not sure where he lands on the totem pole in regards to the welterweight title chase:

“Yeah, I mean, obviously, I haven’t even thought of my path forward, Ariel,” Askren said. “I had such a nice path set up. And I did it to myself, Jorge Masvidal was my pick. I said I wanted to fight the winner of Darren Till vs. Jorge Masvidal and I got it. That was who I wanted to fight, and that was my path to the title, and I had created all this hype and all this momentum, and I was right where I wanted to be.

“I was right on the precipice of having that title shot against Usman if I had gone and won the fight on Saturday night. And, now, like I said, I enjoyed hanging out with my friends yesterday, I flew home this morning, I didn’t really – I haven’t really thought about ‘Hey, where am I now? What’s my path forward? Who am I gonna fight next?’

“I haven’t really thought of that because I was in on one thing happening, the other thing happened, so, I guess I have to take some time to regroup.”

One reason, aside from the quick nature of the knockout, that Askren’s defeat made waves was due to the tremendous amount of trash talk from “Funky.” He was ultimately forced to eat his words, however, this experience won’t deter him from talking trash to opponents in the future:

“No! Of course it’s going to be the same,” Askren said. “One of the more moronic things that Jorge is saying, is like, ‘He deserved to get hit because he was talking all that trash.’ It’s like, listen, if I didn’t say nothing, number one I wouldn’t have gotten the fight, number two [unintelligible], but number three, would you have really not tried to knock me out?

“Would you have, like, been nice to me and tried to play patty cake with me, or paper, scissors rock or something? No. No matter what happened you were going to try and knock me out, so why are you saying this narrative that you tried to knock me out because I was talking trash. You were going to try and knock me out, literally no matter what happens. What we do, Ariel, is a cage fight.

“The whole point is to incapacitate the opponent into which that cannot compete any longer. And so, the idea that he tried to make it worst because I was talking trash, it’s insane, it’s just totally ridiculous. And I know it sounds good, it sounds right, and it sounds like what most people would think, but that’s just not the case.

“And if he’s not trying hard against other people because they’re not talking trash, I would probably tell him he should probably re-think his strategy and try hard regardless of what they say to him.”

What do you think about Askren saying he won’t stop talking trash before fights after being knocked out by Jorge Masvidal in five seconds?

This past weekend (Sat. July 6, 2019) Jorge Masvidal pulled off the fastest knockout in UFC history.

“Gamebred” finished Askren in five seconds with a flying knee as Askren shot in on an immediate takedown attempt. After a pair of follow-up shots in which one could see “Funky” was clearly unconscious, the fight was waved off. The finish was not only a record-setting one, but the first defeat of Askren’s career.

Askren gave his first interview today (Mon. July 8, 2019) after the knockout on “The Ariel Helwani MMA Show,” and reacted to being on the receiving end of such a record. Here’s what he had to say:

“No [being the record doesn’t bother him],” Askren said. “I think that’s probably a positive. Right? I mean, would you rather be somewhere in mediocrity like 24 seconds or would you rather have a record at five. You might as well have the record. And if you calculate my pay-per-hour compared to a five-second knockout, it’d be pretty fantastic.”

There was, and still is, clear bad blood between Masvidal and Askren. Losing to someone like “Gamebred” makes the defeat all the more bitter, but “Funky” isn’t going to sit around and cry about it:

“Yeah, it’s annoying,” Askren admitted. “But what am I going to do about it? Cry? Ask for a rematch? I don’t deserve a rematch I got knocked out in five seconds. What do you want me to do? Sometimes life doesn’t go your way, sometimes you get your ass kicked, sometimes you lose. You don’t have to like it, but you have to accept it.”

What do you think about Askren’s comments regarding his knockout loss to Masvidal?

Fans instantly started trolling Ben Askren following his knockout defeat to Jorge Masvidal. However, some took it too far by commenting on his wife’s Instagram profile.

Askren suffered the first defeat of his professional career when he was knocked out by a flying knee in just five seconds at UFC 239 this past weekend. As a result, he became the unfortunate recipient of the quickest knockout in UFC history.

The jokes and insults started pouring in, especially given all of Askren’s trash talk since signing with the UFC last year. While some may have crossed the line, Askren jokingly acknowledged that he deserved the brunt of the insults.

However, others took it too far by finding his wife’s Instagram profile and making comments such as “is your husband still alive?” among others.

For her part, Amy Askren took her husband’s defeat well as she later reacted:

“Loved having family and so many friends here to support @benaskren,” she wrote. “The fight was NOT ideal…but anything can happen in this business. He’s already accomplished insane feats in life and I feel so lucky to witness what he will do in the future.”

Do you think something should be done to fans who take trolling too far?
