Last night (Sat. July 6, 2019) at UFC 239 Jorge Masvidal shook up the mixed martial arts (MMA) community.

“Gamebred” finished Ben Askren in just five seconds with a flying knee as “Funky” shot in on an immediate takedown. It resulted in the fastest knockout in UFC history. Thankfully, UFC President Dana White announced after the show during the post-fight press conference that Askren’s tests all came back negative and that he should be fine.

Askren was healthy enough to Tweet shortly after being taken to the hospital, to which Masvidal wasted no time replying. The new owner of the fastest knockout in UFC history called “fake news” on Askren’s Tweet, claiming the former ONE and Bellator welterweight champion is still asleep:

With Masvidal now dispatching of Askren, it makes for an interesting situation in the 170-pound title picture. Colby Covington, Masvidal’s good friend and teammate, will be facing Robbie Lawler shortly, which could also have implications on a title bout.

Welterweight champion Kamaru Usman is not yet healthy, so his status will be a major determining factor in who gets the nod as well. As for Askren, it will be interesting to see what “Funky” does next after suffering the first defeat of his MMA career in dramatic fashion.

What do you think about the animosity still being alive and well between Masvidal and Askren after UFC 239?

However, he also divulged that the knockout was one of the most vicious he has ever seen in all his years of being around the sport of MMA (via BJPenn.com):

“Wow. I mean it was.. It’s one of those things. You know, if you’re Masvidal you’re assuming (Ben Askren) is going to run right out and shoot on you. So you’re going to run right out and throw the flying knee. Yea, it was one of the most viscous knockouts that I have ever seen in my life.”

Askren must be doing fine for now, as he was able to issue out a Tweet hours after being knocked out. However, it remains to be seen what is next for the former ONE and Bellator welterweight champion after suffering the first loss of his MMA career.

Ben Askren suffered a scary knockout last night (Sat. July 6, 2019) on the UFC 239 pay-per-view (PPV) main card.

Askren was knocked out in five seconds by Jorge Masvidal with a flying knee while going in on a takedown attempt. The knockout was officially recorded as the fastest in UFC history, and sent the mixed martial arts (MMA) community into a frenzy. Aside from the hype over the knockout, many fans were concerned for Askren’s health.

Speaking at the UFC 239 post-fight press conference, UFC President Dana White provided a health update on “Funky.” White noted Askren was doing good and that, “All of his stuff came back negative, so he’s okay.” White then quickly corrected himself and said, “I’m sure he’s not okay, but he’s – yeah [good enough].”

It will be interesting to see how the welterweight division plays out given Masvidal’s win. “Gamebred” could very well be the next challenger for Kamaru Usman’s 170-pound title. However, Colby Covington vs. Robbie Lawler could also throw a wrench into Masvidal’s title aspirations.

As for Askren, he’s doing well enough to Tweet after his knockout loss, but it will be especially interesting to see what’s next for him.

What do you think about Askren’s MMA career moving forward? Will he fight again?
